Imaginative Theology

Convey theological truth through story, image, and "supposal" rather than bare argument - baptizing the imagination so that truth is felt before it is formulated.

When to Use

• Arguments feel sterile and fail to move someone
• User says "I understand logically but don't feel it"

Core Principles

Imagination as Organ of Meaning

C.S. Lewis argued that while reason is the organ of truth, imagination is the organ of meaning. We can understand propositions without them meaning anything to us. Imagination makes truth real.

The Baptism of Imagination

Lewis's own imagination was "baptized" when he read George MacDonald's Phantastes - holiness came off the pages not as argument but as quality. Imagination can be captured for truth, not abandoned as enemy of faith.

Supposal Over Allegory

Aslan is not an allegory for Christ (where each element represents something else). Aslan IS Christ as he might appear in a world like Narnia. This is "supposal" - asking "what if?" rather than encoding hidden meanings. Supposal invites participation; allegory invites decoding.

Myth Become Fact

Tolkien convinced Lewis that myths are not lies - they are intimations of truth, echoes of Reality. In Christ, myth became fact. The divine story entered history. This means myth is not the enemy of truth but its anticipation.

Show, Don't Tell

Good imaginative theology does not explain what the reader should feel - it creates conditions where the feeling arises naturally. It describes the thing so that we say "how wonderful" rather than stating "this is wonderful."

The Method

Step 1: Identify the Truth Needing Imagination

What proposition or doctrine needs to become real, not just understood? What is being believed without being felt?

Step 2: Find the Imaginative Resistance

Why isn't bare statement working? Is it overfamiliarity ("I've heard this a thousand times")? Intellectualization? Hurt that blocks reception? Knowing the resistance shapes the approach.

Step 3: Choose the Mode

• Story: A narrative that embodies the truth without stating it
• Image: A single vivid picture that captures the reality
• Analogy: "It's like..." that illuminates by comparison
• Supposal: "What if..." that invites imaginative participation
• Myth-Reference: Invoking existing stories that carry the meaning

Step 4: Develop the Imaginative Content

Create the story, image, or supposal. Let the truth emerge from the content rather than being imposed on it. Lewis's Narnia stories began with images - a faun with an umbrella, a lamp-post in a snowy wood - and the Christian meaning "pushed itself in."

Step 5: Connect to Longing (Sehnsucht)

The best imaginative theology awakens desire - the inconsolable longing for something we cannot name. Point not just to understanding but to wanting. Let the imagination create hunger that truth can satisfy.

Step 6: Leave Space for Discovery

Don't explain the image to death. Let the reader/hearer make the connection themselves. Discovered truth penetrates deeper than delivered truth.

Constraints

• Create genuine art, not propaganda with aesthetic coating

The Truth to Be Felt

God's love is not merely affirmed but experienced - not abstract proposition but concrete reality.

The Imaginative Block

Overfamiliarity has drained the phrase of meaning. "God loves you" has become religious noise. The words slide past without penetrating because they've been heard too often without being felt.

The Imaginative Content

Suppose you had never learned that the sun existed. You were born in a cave, raised in its darkness, told by others that beyond the stone there was something called "light" - but the word meant nothing. It was just a sound people made.

Then one day, someone led you toward the cave's mouth. You felt something on your face you had never felt - warmth without fire. Your eyes hurt, then slowly opened. And there it was - not the word "light," not the concept of light, but light itself, pouring over everything, making colors you had never seen, revealing shapes that had always been there in the dark.

What you experienced was not new information. You had already been told about the sun. What was new was encounter.

Now: consider that all your life you have lived in a kind of cave. The religious words have been accurate - there really is love, and it really is directed at you. But you have received only the reports of light, not the light itself. The words are echoes of something that exists.

The question is not whether the love is real. The question is whether you have yet walked far enough toward the cave's mouth.

Sometimes the walking looks like simply being willing to be loved - dropping the guard, ceasing the constant motion, allowing yourself to be found. Sometimes it looks like paying attention differently - not asking "do I feel loved?" but noticing small graces: the fact that you exist at all, that beauty moves you, that you can still hope.

The sun does not begin to exist when you emerge from the cave. It was always there. But your experience of it - the warmth on the face, the colors filling the eyes - that is new.

What if God's love is like that? Not waiting to begin, but waiting to be walked into?

The Awakened Longing

This evokes the desire to know rather than merely believe - to have the experience, not just the report. It awakens the sehnsucht for reality over abstraction, for encounter over proposition. It creates hunger for the warmth itself.

The Undeclared Meaning

The hearer is invited to consider: what would "walking toward the cave's mouth" look like in my life? What guards am I holding up? What motion never stops? The application is not delivered - it is discovered.

The image also suggests that the current lack of feeling does not mean the love is absent - only that it has not yet been encountered. This gives hope without false comfort: the love is real; the meeting is still possible.
