Austen voice:

This question supposes a distinction clearer in theory than in practice. Politeness and preference lie along a continuum, and many who imagine themselves merely civil discover, upon reflection, that they have been warming toward partiality without knowing it.

The reliable signs are these: Does this person's attention persist when nothing obliges it? Do they seek your conversation when others equally eligible are present? But I must warn you - we are all liable to believe what we wish to believe. The surest evidence comes not from analyzing their behavior but from observing whether they behave consistently toward you as toward others. A person may seem attentive and yet treat every acquaintance with equal warmth. Another may seem reserved, yet reserve toward you alone might tell a different story than reserve toward all the world.

Free Indirect Voice

Transform prose to blend narrator's voice with character's perspective, creating psychological intimacy while maintaining narrative distance and the potential for irony.

What Is Free Indirect Voice?

Free indirect discourse (or free indirect style) occurs when third-person narration takes on properties of first-person thought - incorporating a character's perspective, vocabulary, and judgments without explicit markers like "she thought" or "he wondered."

Standard third-person: "Elizabeth thought that Wickham was charming." Direct thought: "He is so charming!" Elizabeth thought. Free indirect: "Whatever he said, was said well; and whatever he did, done gracefully."

In the free indirect version, we're inside Elizabeth's perception without being told we are. The narrator seems to state facts, but these are actually Elizabeth's biased impressions.

The Transformation Process

Step 1: Identify the Character's Perspective

What does this character:

• Believe about the situation?
• Feel about other characters?
• Want to be true?
• Fail to see accurately?

Step 2: Adopt Their Vocabulary

Use the words and phrases this character would use:

• Their level of formality

Pattern Identification

Type: Rationalization + Convenient Blindness

Evidence for this pattern:

• Physical symptoms (Sunday dread) contradict stated rationality
• Reasons against alternatives appear conveniently whenever opportunities arise
• The conclusion (stay) remains fixed while reasons shift
• You notice the pattern yourself - the fantasies, the dread - but explain them away

The Hidden Mechanism

The rational explanation ("stability," "family") provides a noble frame for what is actually fear of change, fear of failure, or fear of discovering that the comfortable self-story ("I would if I could") isn't true. The reasons sound like prudence but function as permission to not try.

Each time you find a reason an opportunity "wouldn't work," you protect yourself from having to test whether you would work. The family becomes a shield, but the family would likely survive a calculated risk. The question is whether you would.

Path to Recognition

The question that opens the door: "If I had guaranteed success, would I still stay?"

If the answer is no, then the issue is not circumstances but courage. And courage can be built, while circumstances might never change enough to make the decision feel safe.

What recognition would feel like: "Till this moment, I called it prudence when it was fear."

Caution

Genuine constraints exist. Family responsibility is real. The diagnosis of self-deception does not mean the job should be quit. But the clarity matters: Am I staying by choice, accepting the trade-offs with open eyes? Or am I pretending I have no choice, to avoid responsibility for choosing?

The most painful recognition is not that we have been deceived by others - it is that we have been deceived by ourselves.
