Named after the biblical prophet Jonah who fled from his calling, the Jonah Complex is the fear of one's own greatness, the evasion of one's destiny, or the avoidance of exercising one's talents.

Maslow's Observation

When asking his students who among them would write a great novel or become a great leader, Maslow noted: "Generally, everybody starts giggling, blushing, and squirming." He saw this anxiety as an inability to fathom the "godlike possibilities within" without succumbing to fear.

Dominant Fear

Fear of the responsibility and exposure that comes with leadership.

The role is desired in the abstract but feared in the concrete. Leading means being visible, accountable, and unable to hide behind someone else's decisions. The shifting rationales ("timing," "readiness") are the mind protecting itself from the real fear: What if I step into my potential and find out what it demands?

• A need to maintain belonging by not exceeding peers

Path Forward

1. Name the real fear. "Timing isn't right" is not the truth. The truth is closer to: "I'm afraid of what happens when I'm actually in charge." Say that out loud.

2. Apply Maslow's test: Ask yourself: "If I knew I would succeed and be supported, would I still hesitate?" If no—the fear is of success itself, not of circumstances.

3. Distinguish humility from helplessness. True humility: "I'll learn as I go; I don't know everything." Jonah Complex: "I'm not ready; someone else should do this."

One coexists with action. The other prevents it.

4. Embrace cosmic humor. You're a human being with limitations who is also capable of stepping into a leadership role. Both are true. You don't have to be perfect to lead. The worm can try to be a god and laugh at itself in the process.

5. Make the growth choice.

"One can choose to go back toward safety or forward toward growth. Growth must be chosen again and again; fear must be overcome again and again."
