When properly developed, a Just Cause becomes the ultimate decision-making filter: every strategy, hire, partnership, and initiative can be evaluated by asking "Does this advance our cause?" Organizations with authentic Just Causes attract talent willing to work harder for less money, partners willing to sacrifice short-term gains, and customers who become advocates. The absence of a Just Cause leaves organizations vulnerable to drift, employee disengagement, and existential confusion during market shifts or leadership transitions.

A Just Cause is not invented; it is excavated from authentic beliefs and articulated with precision. The Why explains where you come from (origin); the Just Cause describes where you are going (destination). Methodology

Phase 1: Assess Current State

Evaluate any existing vision/mission against the five criteria:

Common problems to identify:

1. Goals masquerading as causes ("Be #1 in our market")
2. Self-serving focus ("Be the most profitable company")
3. Finite endpoints ("Cure cancer" is a goal; "A world without suffering from disease" is a cause)

Phase 2: Excavate the Ideal

If no clear Just Cause exists, explore through structured questioning:

4. Resilient

• Can survive changes in products, services, markets, and leadership

• Test: Would this still matter in 50 years?

5. Idealistic

• Big enough to never be fully achieved
• A direction, not a destination
• Test: Can you ever finish and declare victory?

Phase 4: Stress Test

Challenge the draft against rigorous criteria:
