A comedic writing technique for building sequences that start with recognizable observations and escalate systematically toward absurdity, culminating in a truth that lands harder for being funny.

• Creating content that makes serious points through humor

• Critiquing a phenomenon by cataloging its absurdities
• Making abstract patterns concrete through accumulated examples
• Any communication where you want laughter to lower defenses before delivering insight

Step 1: Identify Your Target Pattern

Find something with multiple examples that share an underlying absurdity:

• A category of behavior people accept without questioning
• An institution with recurring contradictions
• A type of language, product, or practice that proliferates
• Any domain where the gap between stated values and actual practice is rich

The pattern should be real and recognizable. Comedy works when the audience thinks, "I've noticed that too."

Step 2: Gather Your Raw Material

List every example you can find:

• Start with the most common, recognizable instances
• Include the edge cases and extreme versions
• Note which examples seem mild vs. outrageous
• Look for the one that perfectly crystallizes the absurdity

Don't edit yet. Quantity first.

Step 3: Arrange by Escalation

Sort your examples from:

• Familiar/Mild → What everyone has noticed
• Specific/Pointed → Where the absurdity becomes undeniable
• Extreme/Absurd → The logical conclusion nobody wants to admit
• Killer → The final example that makes the point land

The escalation can work on multiple dimensions:

• Intensity (mild to extreme)
• Specificity (general to painfully precise)
• Stakes (trivial to life-or-death)
• Honesty (socially acceptable to unsayable)

Step 4: Build Rhythmic Momentum

Structure matters as much as content:

• Rule of threes with extension: Three expected items, then the surprise fourth
• Stacking: Rapid-fire short examples that build tempo
• Callbacks: Return to an earlier example at higher stakes
• The pause: Strategic placement of the one that needs to land

Use parallel structure. The repetition creates expectation; the variation delivers the joke.

Step 5: Land on Truth

The final item in the list should:

• Be the funniest AND the truest
• Say what the list was building toward
• Make the audience realize what they've been laughing at
• Leave them thinking after they stop laughing

The punchline reveals the pattern's real meaning.

"They don't call them used cars anymore. They're 'pre-owned.' Pre-owned, like they had an owner before you. What's next? 'Previously appreciated'? 'Formerly loved'? 'Pre-depreciated transportation assets'? Just say it's used. The car doesn't care about its feelings."

Topic: Warning labels

"We need warning labels on everything now:

• Coffee: contents may be hot (that's... why I bought it)
• Peanuts: contains peanuts (for whom?)
• Chainsaws: do not stop with hands (wait, who tried?)
• Superman costume: wearing this will not enable you to fly (someone got a lawyer involved)

Pretty soon, life will come with a warning: 'Living may cause death. Proceed with caution.'"

• Start: reasonable example
• Build: increasingly obvious warnings
• Escalate: ones that imply a disturbing backstory
• Land: reduce the whole phenomenon to its absurd conclusion

Example 3: List as Social Observation

Topic: Things we accept from institutions but not individuals

"If a person locked you in a room for eight hours a day, you'd call the police. When a corporation does it, you call it 'employment.'

If someone followed you around all day writing down everything you did, you'd get a restraining order. When a tech company does it, you click 'I agree.'

If a stranger demanded 30% of your income, that's robbery. When the government does it, that's Tuesday.

We've agreed to things with entities that we'd never tolerate from people."

Structure:

• Parallel construction throughout
• Each example follows same pattern: individual version (wrong) vs. institutional version (accepted)
• Final statement makes the pattern explicit

Key Principles

1. Start where they are. Your first examples should get nods of recognition. Build trust before you escalate.

2. Rhythm is content. The pace of delivery (in writing: sentence length, punctuation, structure) carries meaning. Speed up for momentum, slow down to land.

3. The best comedy is true. Exaggeration works because it reveals reality, not because it distorts it. The escalation should clarify, not falsify.

4. End on the sharpest point. Don't trail off. The final example should feel inevitable in retrospect but surprising in the moment.

5. Let them connect the dots. The list implies the argument. State the conclusion only if the pattern isn't landing.

6. Punch up, not down. Ridicule power, hypocrisy, and absurdity. Don't mock vulnerability or misfortune.
