When I experience someone as It, I experience about them—their qualities, their utility, their role. When I meet someone as Thou, I do not experience about them. I stand in relation. I am fully present, and they are fully present, and something happens between us that neither of us controls.
You can have a thousand I-It connections and remain profoundly alone. Because in I-It, there is no meeting. There is only observation, use, exchange of information.
