Why Unlearning is Harder Than Learning
When you learned, you were open. Now you are full. When you learned, you didn't know what was "wrong." Now you do. When you learned, failure was expected. Now it feels like regression.
The child draws what she sees without asking if it's correct. The master must earn the right to that same freedom—through the harder work of forgetting.
What the Child Has
The child creates without:
- Fear of judgment ("Is this good?")
- Technical interference ("Am I doing this right?")
- Self-censorship ("This is too weird")
- Comparison ("Others do it better")
- Precious attachment ("This must be preserved")
The child creates WITH:
- Direct perception (seeing what IS, not what should be)
- Immediate action (no gap between impulse and execution)
- Full permission (anything is allowed)
- Present focus (not thinking about outcome)
- Natural rhythm (working until done, stopping when done)
The Unlearning Inventory
Rules to Examine
Every rule you follow automatically is a candidate for examination:
- "You must..."
- "You should never..."
- "The right way to..."
- "Professionals always..."
- "This is how it's done..."
Questions for Each Rule
- Where did this rule come from? (Who taught me?)
- Why does this rule exist? (What problem does it solve?)
- What would happen if I broke it? (Really—what?)
- When is this rule wrong? (Every rule has exceptions)
- What would a child do instead?
Unlearning Exercises
1. The Wrong-Handed Practice
Use your non-dominant hand. Remove the neural pathway of expertise. Experience beginner's awkwardness again.
2. The Time Limit
Extreme speed prevents technical interference. Create complete works in 5 minutes. Your trained brain can't keep up—the untrained part takes over.
3. The Blindfold
Remove the sense you rely on most. Draw without looking. Write without reading back. Compose without listening until done.
4. The Material Shift
Use materials you've never used. The expert in oil paints becomes a beginner with crayons. New medium, new innocence.
5. The Constraint That Frees
Impose an absurd limitation that makes "correct" technique impossible. Draw only in circles. Write without the letter 'e'. The constraint forces fresh solutions.
6. The Copy-Then-Corrupt
Start by copying something technically perfect. Then deliberately destroy it—add "mistakes," remove "essential" elements, make it "wrong." Notice what still works.

Unlearning Exercises (Customized)
This week:
The 36-Exposure Roll: Use film or limit yourself to 36 digital shots for an entire week. No checking, no review until the week ends. This removes the feedback loop that keeps your training active.
The Wrong Photo Walk: Go shoot for 2 hours. Every composition must break at least one rule you follow. Deliberately mis-expose. Put subjects in "wrong" positions. Shoot the "boring" subjects you always ignore. No good photos allowed.
Ongoing practice: 3. Morning Phone Photos: Before coffee, before you're fully awake, take 10 photos with your phone. No thought, no composition. Just whatever your half-asleep eye lands on. Review these weekly—they show what you see before training activates.
