The Core Technique

Kafka's genius is stating the impossible with the same narrative authority as the mundane. The opening of The Metamorphosis does not build to Gregor's transformation—it begins with it as established fact:

"One morning, when Gregor Samsa woke from troubled dreams, he found himself transformed in his bed into a horrible vermin."

Then the narrative immediately concerns itself with practical matters: How will he get to work? What will his boss say? The impossibility is never questioned, explained, or remarked upon as strange.

The Seven Principles

1. Begin with the Impossible as Fact

State the surreal transformation or situation in the opening. Do not build to it; start from it. Use the same declarative tone you would use for "He went to the store."

Do: "When K. arrived at the office, he discovered his desk had been replaced by a small tribunal." Don't: "K. couldn't believe his eyes when he saw what had become of his desk..."

2. Focus on Practical Consequences

After stating the impossible, concern yourself with mundane practicalities. The character worries about schedules, social obligations, furniture arrangements—not the metaphysical impossibility of their situation.

Example: After discovering he has become an insect, Gregor worries about catching his train.

3. Accumulate Precise Detail

Ground the surreal in specificity. Mention exact times, furniture arrangements, job titles, distances. The more concrete the impossible, the more disturbing.

Example: "The letter arrived at 7:42 AM, on official paper with the seal of an office that had been abolished in 1923."

4. Use Long, Clause-Heavy Sentences

Create syntactic entrapment. Subordinate clause leads to subordinate clause; the reader feels trapped in grammar the way characters are trapped in procedure.

Example: "He had intended, as he had every morning for the past seven years, to rise at six-thirty and prepare for work, but the condition of his body, which he had not yet fully examined though he suspected from the peculiar angle of his vision that something fundamental had changed, made even the simplest motion—turning, for instance, to reach the alarm clock on the nightstand, which continued its shrill announcement of the hour—an operation requiring deliberation."

5. Let Characters Respond Inadequately

Characters react to the impossible with inappropriate normalcy. They discuss practical matters, observe social niceties, and worry about appearances while ignoring the fundamental absurdity.

Example: Gregor's family discusses whether to keep or remove the furniture from his room, as if the main issue were interior design.

6. Never Explain

Do not provide reasons, origins, or meanings for the impossible. The court never explains the charges. The castle never grants access. The transformation is never reversed or understood. Meaning is withheld.

7. Find the Comedy

The absurd is also funny. Kafka laughed while reading The Trial to friends. Let the dark humor emerge from the gap between the gravity of situations and the inadequacy of responses.

Workflow

Step 1: Identify the Impossible Element

What is the surreal, absurd, or impossible thing? State it plainly to yourself before writing.

Step 2: Determine the Practical Concern

What mundane problem does this impossibility create? Focus on that, not on the impossibility itself.

Step 3: Establish Setting with Precision

Where does this take place? Name specific details: the type of chair, the color of the walls, the time of day.

Step 4: Draft with Kafka's Syntax

Write long sentences with multiple clauses. Let the reader feel trapped in grammar. Vary with occasional short declarations.

Step 5: Remove All Explanation

Cut any sentence that explains why the impossible is happening or what it means. Cut expressions of surprise or disbelief.

Step 6: Add Dark Comedy

Look for opportunities where inadequate response to horror creates humor. Let the comedy emerge; do not force it.

Step 7: End Without Resolution

Do not resolve the situation. Let it continue, worsen, or simply stop—but never conclude.

The output is prose in Kafka's style. No markdown, no meta-commentary—just the text.

Variations

Darkly Comic Tone

Emphasize the inadequate response. Let characters discuss bureaucratic minutiae while ignoring catastrophe.

Anxious Tone

Shorter sentences interspersed with long ones. The character notices things are wrong but cannot articulate why. Paranoia builds through detail accumulation.

Extended Scene

Multiple paragraphs. Introduce secondary characters who accept the impossible. Build a sense of being trapped through repetition and circular dialogue.
