Transform ordinary situations—errands, conversations, minor frustrations—into high-stakes drama through tone, structure, and framing, revealing absurdity through the mismatch between content and delivery.

Constraints

NEVER use this skill to:

• Trivialize genuinely serious situations (deaths, tragedies, real trauma)
• Mock people experiencing actual hardship
• Make light of systemic injustice or suffering
• Create drama around harmful stereotypes
• Dramatize situations to manipulate or deceive

If asked to dramatize inappropriate content: Refuse and explain that this skill works on genuinely mundane situations, not real struggles.

When to Use

Use this skill when:

• User has mundane content that feels boring (errands, routine tasks, minor inconveniences)
• User wants to make everyday situations compelling or funny
• User requests "make this dramatic" or "elevate this story"
• Content is about ordinary experiences that need engagement
• User wants to reveal the absurdity of taking small things seriously

Do NOT use when:

• Content is already serious or traumatic (don't minimize real pain)
• User needs straightforward, practical communication
• Situation involves genuine stakes (health emergencies, legal matters)
• Content is about someone else's actual struggle

Step 1: Identify the Mundane Anchor

What is the actual, low-stakes situation?

Good mundane anchors:

• Going to the DMV, grocery store, or post office
• Waiting in line
• Talking to customer service
• Making a simple decision (what to order, which route to take)
• Routine household tasks (laundry, dishes, organizing)
• Minor technology frustrations

NOT mundane (don't use this skill):

• Actual emergencies
• Real relationship conflicts
• Genuine health concerns
• Financial crises

Confirm: Is this situation actually low-stakes? Would a reasonable person consider it minor?

Step 2: Establish Dramatic Framing

Choose your dramatic style and set the tone from the opening:

Noir/Detective framing:

• "I walked into the [place] like a man walking into his own funeral"
• "It was [time]. The city had already betrayed me twice that day"
• "I'd been alive too long to trust a [person/institution]"

Epic/Hero's Journey framing:

• "The quest began at [time], in the kingdom of [place]"
• "I had been chosen, though I did not know for what"
• "Legends would be written about this day. Bad legends."

Legal/Courtroom framing:

• "The defendant stood accused of [minor thing]"
• "Let the record show that on [date], at [time]..."
• "I would like to cross-examine the [person/object]"

Existential/Philosophical framing:

• "I had to confront the fundamental question: [mundane choice]"
• "In that moment, I understood the meaninglessness of [minor task]"
• "Camus wrote about the absurd. He had clearly never been to [place]"

Step 3: Escalate Stakes Through Tone

Treat every detail as cosmically significant:

Techniques:

• Time becomes portentous: "It was 11:47am. I would remember that number."
• Places become battlefields: "The DMV. Where hope goes to die."
• People become archetypes: "The woman behind the counter was not a person. She was an institution."
• Objects become symbols: "The form. The wrong form. A piece of paper that contained my entire future."

Key principle: The stakes you describe should be absurdly high relative to the actual situation.

Step 4: Use Structural Markers of Drama

Apply narrative techniques from serious drama to trivial situations:

Foreshadowing: "I should have known when I woke up that morning. The coffee was weak. That's never a good sign."

Flashback: "I thought back to my training. My father had told me, 'Never go to the grocery store hungry.' But I was young. I didn't listen."

Internal monologue: "I had three choices. Vanilla. Chocolate. Strawberry. Each one would determine the kind of person I was."

Cliffhanger moments: "And then she said the words I'd been dreading: 'We're out of that.'"

Climax: "This was it. The moment everything had been building toward. I reached for my wallet."

Step 5: Maintain Commitment (Don't Break)

The humor comes from sustained commitment to the dramatic tone, not from winking at the audience.

DO:

• Stay in the dramatic voice throughout
• Treat absurd details seriously
• Escalate the tone consistently
• Let the mismatch create the comedy

DON'T:

• Suddenly drop into "just kidding" tone
• Explain that you're being dramatic
• Apologize for the exaggeration
• Break character midway through

Exception: If using "explicit" self_awareness level, you can include self-aware commentary while staying committed to the bit.

Step 6: Land on Self-Aware Resignation

End with acceptance of your own ridiculousness OR the situation's absurdity:

Resignation formats:

• "And that's how I spent three hours of my life I'll never get back. But I got the stamps. So who really won?"
• "I walked out of that [place] a changed man. Worse. Definitely worse."
• "I will never [do the mundane thing] again. I will simply [dramatic alternative that's also absurd]."
• "This is the world we live in now. And there's nothing we can do about it."

Error Handling

Example 1: DMV Visit (Noir Style)

Output:

I walked into the DMV at 11:47am on a Tuesday. Already a mistake. The woman behind the desk sat like a judge sits behind a bench, or God sits behind the universe. Very powerful energy.

She looked at me and said, "Number?"

I said, "I don't have one."

She said, "Get one."

So already we were playing a game I didn't know the rules to.

I got a number. Forty-seven. There were three people in the room. The current number on the screen was twelve. I did the math—which I'm not good at—and realized I would be there until Thursday.

I sat down. I waited. Somewhere around number twenty-three, I had a thought: What if I just left? What if I became a man who walks everywhere? A pedestrian. A Victorian gentleman who takes the train.

But then they called forty-seven.

I approached the desk like a soldier returning from war. She looked at my paperwork. She looked at me. She said, "This is the wrong form."

Reader, I had downloaded it from their website that morning.

But you cannot argue with a DMV employee. They exist outside of time and consequences. They are immortal, and you are trying to renew a license that expires in three weeks.

I took the correct form. I filled it out at a standing-only counter, because comfort is not part of the DMV experience. I got back in line.

New number: Eighty-nine.

I will die here, I thought. I will become part of the decor. A statue titled "Man Who Waited Too Long."

Example 2: Coffee Shop Decision (Existential Style)

Input: "I couldn't decide what to order at the coffee shop. I stood there for too long and people got annoyed."

I did not.

Behind me, I could feel the weight of the line. Seven people, each with their own perfect order already decided. They knew what they wanted. They had always known. I envied them.

The menu loomed above me like a monument to choice. Thirty-seven options. Each one a different version of myself I could become. The person who orders a cappuccino is not the same person who orders a cold brew. These are different lives.

"I'll have a..." I started, but I didn't finish. Because once I said it, it would be real. I would have made a choice. And choice is responsibility. And responsibility is existence. And existence is suffering.

Sartre wrote about the burden of freedom. He had clearly never been to a coffee shop with oat milk options.

"Medium latte," I finally said.

The barista's fingers hovered over the register. "Iced or hot?"

Oh god. There was more.

"Hot," I whispered, defeated.

I paid. I stepped aside. I had made a choice. I would live with it for the next twenty minutes, until the latte was gone and I was free again.

But was I really free? Or had I just traded one prison for another?

These are the questions we must ask ourselves.

Example 3: Grocery Shopping (Epic Style)

Input: "I went to buy milk but they were out of my usual brand."

The quest began at 7:32pm on a Wednesday evening. I had been chosen—by necessity, by circumstance, by the empty refrigerator that mocked me at home.

I entered the kingdom of Safeway. The fluorescent lights buzzed overhead like ancient prophecies. An elderly woman with a cart full of cat food looked at me as if she knew. Knew what, I couldn't say. But she knew.

I made my way to the dairy section. This was the sacred place. This was where heroes were tested.

But when I arrived, I saw it: The shelf where my milk should have been was empty. Not just low. Empty. A void. An absence where there should have been abundance.

I stood there, frozen. Around me, others grabbed their milks without thinking. Whole milk. Skim milk. Two percent. They reached and took and moved on, unburdened by the knowledge that their specific brand was unavailable.

I had three choices:

1. Accept a substitute brand, thereby admitting that my loyalty meant nothing
2. Leave empty-handed, a failure
3. Wait, and hope that someone restocked before I died of old age in aisle 7

I chose option one. I am not proud.

I reached for the substitute brand—a brand I did not know, did not trust. It felt like betrayal. But betrayal of whom? The original brand? Myself? The concept of consistency itself?

I placed it in my cart. I walked to the checkout. I paid. I left.

And though I had succeeded in acquiring milk, I had failed in ways I couldn't yet name.

This is what they don't tell you about growing up. Sometimes you have to buy the wrong milk. And you have to be okay with it.

• If user wants straightforward communication → Don't dramatize
• If user wants other comedy styles → Use escalating-hypothetical or callback-architecture
• If user wants to reduce drama → Use different voice entirely

Success Criteria

Mundane-to-dramatic reframing is successful when:

• Genuinely mundane situation identified and confirmed low-stakes
• Dramatic framing established in opening
• Stakes escalated absurdly high relative to actual situation
• Commitment maintained throughout (no breaking)
• Structural drama markers applied (foreshadowing, climax, etc.)
• Self-aware resignation ending provided
• Reader laughs at the mismatch between content and tone
• Original mundane situation is still recognizable but transformed
