Recover the possibility of new beginnings in situations that seem hopeless, determined, or locked-in. Based on Hannah Arendt's concept of natality—the human capacity to begin something new.

When to Use

• When someone feels trapped by circumstances
• When a situation seems inevitable or determined
• When despair or fatalism has taken hold
• When "there's nothing we can do" is the prevailing mood

The Concept of Natality

Arendt grounds human freedom not in will or choice but in the fact of birth:

"The miracle that saves the world, the realm of human affairs, from its normal, 'natural' ruin is ultimately the fact of natality, in which the faculty of action is ontologically rooted. It is, in other words, the birth of new men and the new beginning, the action they are capable of by virtue of being born."

What natality means:

• Each birth brings someone genuinely new into the world
• Humans have the capacity to start something unprecedented
• Action is the political manifestation of this capacity
• The unexpected can always be expected from human beings

Against determinism:

• Historical laws do not determine outcomes
• No process is truly automatic
• Human beings can always interrupt, begin anew
• The "miracle" of beginning is always possible

The Sources of False Inevitability

Before recovering possibility, understand why situations seem determined:

1. Historical Determinism

• "This is how history moves"
• "Economic forces make this inevitable"
• "Technology determines outcomes"

The error: Treating human affairs as natural processes that follow laws.

2. Psychological Fatalism

• "People don't change"
• "Human nature makes this inevitable"
• "We've tried everything"

The error: Forgetting that humans can surprise themselves and others.

3. Institutional Resignation

• "The system is too powerful"
• "Change has to come from above"
• "One person can't make a difference"

The error: Ignoring how institutions depend on human participation.

4. Past Failure Projection

• "We tried this and it didn't work"
• "History shows this always fails"
• "The same thing will happen again"

The error: Assuming the future must replicate the past.

The Reframe Process

Step 1: Identify the Inevitability Claim

What specifically is claimed to be inevitable, determined, or impossible?

Step 2: Examine the Source

Which type of determinism is operating?

• Historical/economic laws
• Human nature claims
• Institutional permanence
• Past failure extrapolation

Step 3: Challenge the Premise

Every "inevitability" rests on assumptions that can be questioned:

For historical determinism: History is made by human action. Every historical "law" is a pattern that persisted until someone interrupted it.

For psychological fatalism: People change constantly. The question is what enables change, not whether it's possible.

For institutional resignation: Institutions exist through human participation. When people withdraw participation, institutions transform or collapse.

For past failure projection: Circumstances change. What failed before may succeed now. Different actors, different approaches, different timing.

Step 4: Recover Examples of Beginning

Where has the impossible become possible?

• Revolutions that succeeded against all odds
• Social movements that transformed what seemed permanent
• Individuals who started something new
• Moments when history "turned"

Step 5: Identify the Space for Action

Given that beginning is possible:

• What could be begun here?
• Who could begin it?
• What would beginning look like?
• What small action might start something larger?

Step 6: Name the Action

Genuine action reveals who we are and creates something new. What action is available?

Constraints

• Do not promise easy success—beginning is possible, triumph is not guaranteed
• Do not dismiss genuine constraints—the world pushes back
• Acknowledge that action has risks and costs
• Distinguish possible from probable—natality is about possibility
• This is not optimism but the refusal of fatalism

The Inevitability Claim

Climate catastrophe is unstoppable. The forces arrayed—political, economic, physical—are too powerful. Human action cannot change the trajectory we are on.

Source Analysis

Type of determinism: Compound—combines all four types

1. Historical/economic: "The system" makes change impossible; capitalism won't allow it
2. Psychological: Humans won't sacrifice present comfort for future survival
3. Institutional: Governments and corporations are locked into current trajectories
4. Past failure: Decades of advocacy haven't changed course

Specific assumption: The future is determined by present forces; human action cannot interrupt the trajectory.

Challenging the Premise

Every "inevitable" historical outcome looked inevitable until it wasn't:

• Soviet communism seemed permanent in 1988
• Apartheid seemed unshakeable in 1989
• Marriage equality seemed impossible in 2000
• The Berlin Wall would stand forever—until it didn't

The forces that seem overwhelming are themselves made of human decisions that can be unmade. "The system" is a word for patterns of human behavior that persist until interrupted.

On tipping points: Physical constraints are real. But human response to physical constraints is not determined. Societies have mobilized rapidly when they chose to (wartime transformation, pandemic response). The question is not whether physics allows change but whether humans choose action.

Examples of Beginning

The Montreal Protocol (1987): The ozone layer was being destroyed. Industry resisted. Yet within years, a global agreement transformed production. It seemed impossible until it happened.

The fall of apartheid: Nelson Mandela spent 27 years in prison while the system seemed permanent. Released, he helped negotiate a transition no one had thought possible.

Greta Thunberg's school strike: One teenager sitting alone outside parliament. Nothing, by any measure of power. And yet—a global movement began from nothing.

These examples don't prove success is guaranteed. They prove that beginning is possible. That the impossible can become possible. That one action can start a cascade.

The Space for Action

What could be begun:

• Local initiatives that demonstrate possibility
• Political organizing that shifts what's electorally viable
• Economic choices that change market signals
• Cultural work that shifts narratives about possibility
• Personal choices that embody a different relationship to the earth

Who could begin:

• Anyone. Natality is ontologically grounded in every human being.
• But especially: those with voice, resources, position—who have more capacity to begin things visible to others

How beginning might look:

• Not solving the whole problem at once
• Starting something that others can join
• Acting in ways that reveal who you are and what you stand for
• Creating facts on the ground that change what's possible

The Question of Natality

Arendt argues that the miracle of natality saves us from "the automatic processes" that seem to determine events. Every birth brings someone new who can interrupt, begin again, do the unexpected.

The question for you is not "Will we succeed?" but "Will I be one who begins, or one who accepts?"

Despair is a choice that predetermines the outcome. Action keeps the future open.

The Call to Action

"The unexpected can be expected from human beings, who are able to perform what is infinitely improbable."

You cannot control the outcome. You can choose whether to act. The situation is not determined until everyone who could begin something has refused to begin it.
