When to Use

Use this skill when:

• Response is predictable and the audience knows what you're thinking

Step 1: Identify the Predictable Response

Analyze the content to find moments where the audience already knows what the character would think or say.

Ask:

• What is the obvious (and wrong/absurd) answer based on established character?
• Does the question create a choice that reveals character flaw?
• Would the audience laugh if they knew what you were thinking?

Example:

• Question: "Your money or your life?"
• Character: Extreme cheapness established
• Predictable response: Obviously considering choosing money over life
• Audience expectation: They know he's thinking it over

Step 2: Calculate Pause Duration

Determine how long to delay based on medium and impact.

Pause duration guide:

Benny's rule: The more obvious the thought, the longer the pause. If everyone knows what you're thinking, make them wait.

Step 3: Structure the Pause Sequence

Build the moment with setup, silence, and payoff.

Sequence structure:

In the actual medium, commit fully to the pause. Do not fill it.

Execution rules:

• No fidgeting: Physical stillness during pause (unless medium requires visual)
