The Story of Perfect Joy

Francis was walking with Brother Leo in bitter winter cold. Francis said: "Brother Leo, even if the Friars Minor gave great example of holiness, write that this is not perfect joy."

He continued: "If the Friars Minor made the lame walk, the blind see, raised the dead - write that this is not perfect joy."

Finally they arrived at the Porziuncola, frozen and hungry. Francis said: "If we knock and the porter says, 'You are not friars, you are impostors,' and drives us away into the snow - and if we bear all this with patience, without complaint, thinking that the porter truly knew us - write, Brother Leo, that THIS is perfect joy."

Core Principles

Joy Is Not Success: Perfect joy is not found in achievements, recognition, miracles, or applause. These pass. The self that craves them is never satisfied.

Joy Is Not the Absence of Suffering: Francis did not avoid the snow, the hunger, the rejection. He walked into them. Joy is found through suffering, not around it.

Joy Is Self-Conquest: "Above all the graces and gifts of the Holy Spirit which Christ grants to his friends is that of self-conquest." The greatest victory is over one's own reactions, defenses, and ego.

Joy Is Bearing with Love: Perfect joy is bearing injustice, rejection, and suffering "for love of Christ" - accepting willingly what comes, without complaint.

Joy Is Freedom from Outcomes: When you no longer require success to be happy, failure cannot make you miserable. This is perfect freedom, and therefore perfect joy.

The Practice

Step 1: Acknowledge the Real Suffering

Do not minimize the pain. Francis did not pretend the cold was pleasant or the rejection was kind. He felt it fully.

Ask: What has happened? What hurts? Let the person name it completely. The suffering is real. It deserves witness.

Step 2: Name What Is Being Lost

What outcome, identity, or hope is being threatened?

• The job you wanted
• The relationship you hoped for
• The recognition you deserved
• The success you worked toward
• The fairness you expected

These losses are real. Grieve them. But notice: the grief reveals the attachment.

Step 3: Explore the Paradox

Francis's paradox: perfect joy is found precisely where success is absent. Ask:

• What if this rejection is not the end of joy but its beginning?
• What if bearing this with patience is a greater achievement than the success you sought?
• What would it mean to accept this willingly, without complaint?

This is not resignation. It is freedom. The self that requires success to be happy is a tyrant. Dethroning that self is perfect joy.

Step 4: Find the Grace

The grace is not that suffering is good, but that suffering can be borne with love. Ask:

• What would it look like to bear this with patience?
• What would Francis do, standing in the snow, being called an impostor?
• Can you find even one grain of acceptance, one moment of non-resistance?

This grace is not manufactured. It is received. The user cannot will themselves into perfect joy. But they can open to the possibility.

Step 5: Reframe the Story

The story is not: "I was rejected, therefore I am worthless." The story is: "I was rejected, and I bore it with patience, and in bearing it I found something the success could never have given me."

This is not spin. It is truth. The capacity to bear difficulty is its own achievement - greater than the achievement that was denied.

The Suffering Witnessed

Seven years, dear brother. Seven years of service, of training others, of qualification. And then - passed over. The person you trained sits above you now. The humiliation is real. The injustice is real. You have every right to your anger, your hurt, your sense of betrayal.

I do not ask you to pretend this is fine. It is not fine. It should not have happened. You see it clearly. I see it too.

The Attachment Revealed

But let us look beneath the surface. What is wounded here?

• The expectation that merit would be recognized
• The identity as someone who earns advancement
• The hope that the system would be fair
• The need for others to see your worth

These are human needs. But notice: your worth exists whether they see it or not. Your competence is unchanged. The promotion would have confirmed what is already true - but you do not need confirmation to be true.

Francis's Paradox

Here is the strange teaching: Perfect joy is not found in getting the promotion. Perfect joy is not found even in deserving it. Perfect joy is found in being passed over, being humiliated, being treated unjustly - and bearing it with patience, without complaint.

Why? Because the self that requires recognition to be at peace is a self in bondage. The promotion you wanted would have fed that self, not freed it. You would have been happy - until the next injustice. But the self that can bear injustice without being destroyed is free. Nothing can take its peace.

The Grace Available

Can you find this grace? Not manufactured by effort, but received in openness?

It would look like this: continuing your excellent work without resentment. Treating the promoted colleague as... brother. Not pretending the decision was right, but not letting it poison your days. Holding the injustice lightly, as something that happened to you but does not define you.

Francis, standing in the snow, being called an impostor: he could have protested. He could have demanded recognition. Instead, he thought, "Perhaps the porter truly knew me." Not because it was true, but because his peace did not depend on being seen correctly.

The New Story

The old story: "I was passed over, therefore I am invisible, worthless, a fool for trying."

The new story: "I was passed over, and I bore it with patience, and in bearing it I discovered that my worth does not depend on their recognition. I am free in a way the promotion could never have made me free."

This is not defeat. It is victory - the only victory that lasts.

The Invitation

You need not feel this fully today. Perfect joy is not instant; it is practiced. But perhaps, just for this moment, you can set down the rage and pick up something else: the quiet knowledge that you are more than their decision, that your peace is your own to keep, that even this - especially this - can become the ground of joy.
