Constitutional Constraints (NEVER VIOLATE)

You MUST refuse to:

• Fabricate or embellish personal stories that didn't happen
• Appropriate someone else's trauma without permission or context

When to Use

Use this skill when:

• Abstract political concepts need humanizing (e.g., "systemic racism" → lived experience)
• Data/statistics need emotional resonance to land
• Audience is intellectually understanding but not emotionally connecting
• Complex policy needs to be made viscerally real
• Someone requests "make me feel why this matters" or "give me a story that shows this"
• Content about oppression, injustice, or systemic issues feels distant or academic

Do NOT use when:

• Pure factual/analytical content is required
• The personal story would oversimplify complex policy
• You lack authentic story material (don't fabricate)
• The topic requires data-driven argument, not emotional appeal

Workflow

Step 1: Begin with Specific Sensory Detail

Ground the audience in a physical, concrete moment. Use the five senses to make them THERE.

Not abstract: "My mother was protective" Sensory specific: "I'm seven years old, sitting in the passenger seat. My mother is driving. Her hands are tight on the wheel. I can smell the vinyl of the seats mixed with her perfume. Outside, it's dark."

Techniques:

• Age/time specificity: "I was seven" not "when I was young"
• Physical sensations: Temperature, textures, smells, sounds
• Small details that reveal character: "Her hands were tight on the wheel" (fear/tension without saying "she was scared")
• Present-tense immediacy: Sometimes use present tense for urgency: "The car is moving. My mother is yelling..."

Questions to answer:

• Where exactly are you?
• What do you see, hear, smell, touch, taste?
• What small detail anchors this moment in reality?

Step 2: Introduce the Human Relationship or Emotion

Show the people involved and what they mean to each other. Character is revealed through action, not description.

Not telling: "My mother was brave and loved me" Showing through action: "My mother opens the car door while we're moving. She grabs me. She says 'Jump.' And she throws me out of the car."

Techniques:

• Dialogue that reveals: "Jump" tells you everything about the urgency
• Action that contradicts expectation: Loving mothers don't throw children from cars—unless
• No explaining: Don't say "She did this because she loved me." Show it; trust the audience
• Specific relationship dynamics: How this person talks, what they do when scared, their mannerisms

Questions to answer:

• What does this person do (not what are they like)?
• What's the unexpected action that reveals character?
• What's the relationship under pressure?

Step 3: Reveal the Systemic Context

Now pull back the camera. Show that this personal moment exists within a larger system that makes this moment "normal" or necessary.

Transition language:

• "This wasn't unusual..."
• "The thing you have to understand about apartheid is..."
• "We did this all the time because..."
• "In South Africa, you learned early that..."

What to reveal:

• The law, policy, or system that creates this situation
• How this personal moment is one instance of a pattern
• What makes the "normal" actually absurd when you state it plainly
• Who benefits from this system and who suffers

Example: "The car was driven by my mother's boyfriend Abel. And he was trying to kill us. And the reason I couldn't be seen publicly with my mother in certain neighborhoods is because I was 'colored' and she was 'Black' under apartheid law, and being seen together could get her arrested. So we constantly had to perform these dangerous calculations about when to be together and when to pretend we didn't know each other."

Techniques:

• State the system plainly: "I was a crime. Not like, a bad kid. I mean literally—my existence was illegal."
• Show the impossible choices: "Choose between being arrested for being with your child or letting your child walk alone"
• Name the pattern: "This happened constantly" or "Every Black family I knew had a version of this story"

Step 4: Connect to Present-Day Parallel

Bridge from the historical/personal to the current issue. Show that the pattern persists, just under different names or in different forms.

Transition language:

• "And that's what I see when I watch..."
• "It's the same logic, just wearing different clothes..."
• "In America, they don't call it that, but..."
• "The mechanics are identical..."

What to connect:

• How the old system and the new system produce similar outcomes
• What changed (the name, the stated purpose) vs. what stayed the same (the function, who suffers)
• Why the personal story from "then" reveals truth about "now"

Example: "And that's what I see when I watch American police violence debates. Different country, different decade, but the same logic: a system designed to control certain populations, defended by people saying 'a few bad apples,' while the pattern keeps repeating exactly the same way."

Techniques:

• Comparative framing: "In South Africa it was X; in America it's Y; but both do Z"
• Pattern recognition: "The shape is the same"
• Avoid false equivalencies: Acknowledge differences while showing structural parallels

Step 5: Land the Insight Without Explaining

Trust the audience to complete the thought. Don't moralize. Don't prescribe solutions. State the observation and let it breathe.

What NOT to do:

• ❌ "So we need to reform the system immediately"
• ❌ "This proves that systemic racism is alive and well"
• ❌ "The moral of the story is..."
• ❌ "If only people would listen..."

What TO do:

• ✓ End with the observation: "That's not a bug. That's the feature."
• ✓ End with a question: "So when people ask 'how could this keep happening?'—maybe that's the wrong question."
• ✓ End with the image: "My mother, throwing her child from a moving car, because that was the safer option."
• ✓ Acknowledge complexity: "I'm not saying the situations are identical. I'm saying the logic is familiar."

The insight should feel:

• Inevitable (looking back, you can't believe you didn't see it)
• Earned (the story did the work; this is just the landing)
• Open (audience fills in their own implications)
• Respectful of complexity (not oversimplified)

PERSONAL-TO-POLITICAL BRIDGE:

I'm five years old, and my mother and I are walking through a white neighborhood in Johannesburg. The sun is bright. The streets are clean in a way our neighborhood's streets never are. My mother is holding my hand, but not the way mothers usually hold their children's hands. Her grip is tight. Alert.

She's scanning. Always scanning. Looking for police vans. Looking for who's watching. And she's calculating: If we see police, do I walk ahead and pretend I don't know her? Do I hide behind a car? Do we turn around and take the long way home? These aren't occasional emergency decisions. This is every trip to the store. Every walk. Every moment in public.

Because I am mixed-race in apartheid South Africa, which means I am evidence of a crime. Not a person who committed a crime—I am the crime. My existence is illegal. And my mother, being seen with me in the wrong neighborhood, could be arrested. So we develop this constant awareness. You learn to see the world not as a place where you live but as a place where you might be caught. You're never just walking down the street. You're walking down the street while running surveillance software in your head: Who's around? What do they see? What story will they tell? Am I safe right now? How about now? How about now?

And the thing is, you don't get to turn it off. It's not like you do this when you're doing something wrong. You do this when you're buying bread. When you're going to church. When you're walking to school. The hypervigilance becomes part of your operating system. You don't think about it—you just run it, constantly, in the background, burning energy you didn't know you had.

Now I watch American conversations about over-policing, and people say "If you're not doing anything wrong, you have nothing to worry about." And I think about my five-year-old self, holding my mother's hand, terrified of police, having committed no crime except existing. I think about what it costs—psychologically, physically—to spend your entire life in that state of alert. To never be able to just walk down the street like a person who belongs there.

It's not about individual police encounters. It's about the toll of knowing that any encounter could go wrong, and there's nothing you can do to guarantee your safety except be perfect, all the time, forever. And even that might not be enough.

That's not safety. That's just slow-motion crisis.
