The Work Orientation

Western culture treats life as a journey with a destination. You work hard now to arrive somewhere later - success, retirement, achievement, security. The present is merely instrumental, a payment for a future reward.

The Arrival Fallacy

The destination keeps moving. Got the degree? Now need the job. Got the job? Now need the promotion. Got the promotion? Now need the corner office. Even arriving at "success" produces the question: "Now what?"

The Music Metaphor

Watts' essential insight: "No one imagines that a symphony is supposed to improve in quality as it goes along, or that the whole object of playing it is to reach the finale. The point of music is discovered in every moment of playing and listening to it."

If you rushed through a piece of music to get to the end, you'd miss the entire point. Life is the same.

The Play Orientation

Play is activity engaged in for itself, not for what it produces. It's not irresponsible - a child playing learns, develops, creates. But the orientation is different: you're not working toward an outcome, you're playing with the process.

Work Within Play

This doesn't mean abandoning goals. It means holding them lightly - like playing a game. You try to win, but the losing would still have been play. The outcome matters, but not more than the playing.

The Diagnosis Framework

Step 1: Identify the Destination

Where does the person believe they're going? What's the "finally" - the arrival point where it will all be worth it?

Step 2: Apply the Music Test

Ask: If life is music, what happens if you race to the finale? What's being missed right now?

Step 3: Trace the Arrival Fallacy

If they arrived, what then? Would they be done? Or would another destination appear?

Step 4: Find the Hidden Play

What would make this same activity feel like play? What's already present that's being overlooked?

Step 5: Reframe the Orientation

Not abandoning the activity but changing the relationship to it. From "work to arrive" to "play while participating."

The Destination Being Raced Toward

"Partner." After twelve years, it's become less a career goal and more a mirage in the desert you've been crawling toward for so long that you've forgotten what water actually is.

The curious thing you've just admitted: you're not sure you want it anymore. So what are you actually pursuing? Not partner-for-what-it-offers. More like: partner-because-otherwise-what-was-the-point.

The Music Test

Imagine twelve years of playing a symphony, and someone asks "What was the music for?" and you answer "To get to the final note."

All those years of cases, of arguments crafted, of problems solved, of minds sharpened - what if that WAS the point? Not a payment for future partnership, but the activity itself?

Right now, you're rushing to a finale while the music is still playing. And here's the really curious thing: when you reach the finale, you know what happens? There's another piece. Partners work harder than associates. The destination is a mirage.

The Arrival Fallacy

Let's say you make partner. Then what?

You'll work the same hours (more, actually). You'll have more responsibility. You'll need to bring in clients, manage a practice, play firm politics. You'll be the senior person, which means higher stakes.

At what point do you arrive at "now I can enjoy life"? When you're managing partner? When you retire? When does the music become the point?

The twelve years you've already lived weren't a payment. They were life. This is life too. It's all music, all the way through.

The Hidden Play

There IS play here - you've just lost sight of it. What made you want to be a lawyer? Solving puzzles? Advocacy? The craft of argument? The complexity of human situations?

That's still present in the work. But you've so thoroughly framed it as labor-toward-destination that you've stopped experiencing it. The same case is "grueling work" or "fascinating puzzle" depending on your orientation.

What if you approached tomorrow's work as: "I get to solve this problem, regardless of destination"? Not pretending the goal doesn't matter, but holding it lighter.

The Reframe

You don't have to quit. You don't have to give up partnership.

But you might try this: Stop playing to win. Play to play.

The partnership might come or not. Either way, tomorrow you'll be lawyering. That can be work-toward-destination (exhausting, hollow) or it can be play-with-engagement (alive, interesting).

The cases are the same. Your relationship to them is the variable.

And here's a secret: people who are playing tend to do better than people who are grinding. Joyful engagement reads as confidence. Fascination with the work reads as mastery. Paradoxically, letting go of the destination often brings it closer.
