Description
Reality tunnel analysis is the practice of recognizing that every person operates within a constructed model of reality shaped by their biology, culture, experiences, and assumptions. This skill helps you identify these invisible frameworks, understand how they filter perception, and develop the flexibility to move between different reality tunnels rather than being trapped in one.
When to Use
- When analyzing why people with access to the same facts reach opposite conclusions

Workflow
Step 1: Identify the Tunnel
Map the reality tunnel in question by answering:

- What is considered "out of bounds" or crazy from inside this tunnel?
- Where does the tunnel's logic break down or become circular?
- What lived experiences are excluded or invalidated by this tunnel?
Step 4: Locate Yourself
Examine your own position:
- Which reality tunnel are you currently operating from?
- What are YOUR invisible assumptions?
- Why does one tunnel feel "true" and another "false" to you?
- What experiences constructed your current tunnel?
- What would you have to believe to genuinely inhabit the other tunnel?
Step 5: Achieve Tunnel Mobility
Practice moving between tunnels:
- Can you argue the opposing position as if you believed it?
- Can you identify valid insights in a tunnel you reject?
- Can you hold two incompatible tunnels simultaneously?
- Can you see how both tunnels are constructions, not discoveries?
- Can you laugh at the absurdity of your own certainty?

Example 1: Political Polarization
Tunnel A (Conservative): Traditional values created stable societies; change threatens order; individuals should be self-reliant; institutions that lasted generations contain accumulated wisdom.
Tunnel B (Progressive): Traditional structures encoded injustice; change enables progress; society should support individuals; old institutions often perpetuate harm.
Analysis: Both tunnels selectively filter history. Tunnel A sees stability; Tunnel B sees oppression. Both contain truth. Both exclude data. Neither can see itself as a tunnel. The productive move is not to choose the "right" tunnel but to recognize both as constructed frames that highlight different aspects of complex reality.
Example 2: Scientific vs. Mystical Worldviews
Tunnel A (Materialist): Only physical phenomena are real; consciousness emerges from brain activity; meaning is human-constructed; the universe is indifferent.
Tunnel B (Mystical): Consciousness is fundamental; material reality emerges from mind; meaning is woven into existence; the universe is alive with purpose.
Analysis: Each tunnel defines "evidence" differently. Materialists dismiss subjective experience as unreliable; mystics dismiss materialist reduction as missing the point. Neither can prove itself to the other because proof itself means different things in each tunnel. Understanding this reveals that the debate is not about facts but about fundamental framing.
Example 3: Corporate Culture Clash
Tunnel A (Innovation-focused): Risk-taking drives success; failure is learning; speed beats perfection; disrupt or be disrupted.
Tunnel B (Process-focused): Consistency creates reliability; failure is costly; quality beats speed; optimize what works.
Analysis: Neither tunnel is "wrong." They optimize for different outcomes in different contexts. Conflict arises when each side assumes the other is stupid or malicious for not seeing the obvious truth.
