5. The Congestion Celebration

Embrace density, overlap, conflict, and programmatic intensity as urban virtues. The culture of congestion produces unexpected encounters, friction, and therefore urbanity itself.

Example: "The city is a machine for intensification. Its purpose is not to organize but to congest. Every true metropolis is a factory of the unexpected, generating transactions between people and activities that would never occur elsewhere."

The mall's vacancy is an invitation to think at its scale - Bigness - without the commercial program that originally justified it. This is architecture's opportunity to be genuinely experimental precisely because the market has failed. Failure liberates.

But also: perhaps leave it dead. Not everything deserves survival. The strip mall, the mega-church, and the obsolete infrastructure are America's gift to post-industrial archaeology. Sometimes the most honest intervention is a plaque."
