The Essential Requirement
"You must have a room, or a certain hour or so a day, where you don't know what was in the newspapers that morning, you don't know who your friends are, you don't know what you owe anybody, you don't know what anybody owes to you. This is a place where you can simply experience and bring forth what you are and what you might be. This is the place of creative incubation."
Why Sacred Space Matters
Campbell understood that transformation requires withdrawal before return. The hero must enter the forest, the cave, the underworld. In modern life, the equivalent is carved space—physical or temporal—where the world's demands fall away and the deeper self can speak.

- Access to the inner life — What's usually drowned out can speak

Sacred space requires patience. The inner life doesn't speak on demand. But if the space is created and honored, eventually it becomes a doorway.
Sacred Space Design Framework
Element 1: Physical or Temporal?
Sacred space can be:
Physical Space:
- A room, corner, or nook dedicated to reflection
- A place in nature you regularly visit
- A seat in a particular cafe or library
- A car parked in a quiet spot
- A garden bench, a park, a walking path
Temporal Space:
- Early morning before others wake
- Late evening after others sleep
- Lunch hour walked alone
- Commute time (if not driving)
- Scheduled "sacred appointments" on the calendar
Both (ideal):
- A specific place at a specific time creates ritual
Element 2: The Boundaries
Sacred space requires protection. What must be kept out:
- Technology — Phone, notifications, the endless scroll
- Interruption — Family, colleagues, demands
- Obligation — The to-do list, email, what's owed
- News — Current events, world crises, outrage
- Others' agendas — Even well-meaning ones
Campbell's standard: "You don't know what was in the newspapers that morning, you don't know who your friends are, you don't know what you owe anybody."
This is radical disconnection. Not forever—for an hour, or thirty minutes, or the time it takes.
Element 3: The Container
What makes the space feel set apart:
Physical containers:
- A specific chair, cushion, or spot
- Objects that signal sacredness (candle, image, stone)
- A closed door, a Do Not Disturb sign
- Natural elements (plants, water, light)
Temporal containers:
- A specific time that never changes
- A ritual that opens the space (lighting candle, breathing)
- A ritual that closes it (gratitude, transition act)
Sensory containers:
- Silence, or specific music
- A particular scent (incense, essential oil)
- Specific lighting (dim, candle, natural)
Element 4: The Purpose
What will you do in this space?
Possibilities:
- Nothing—simply being without agenda
- Meditation or contemplation
- Journaling or morning pages
- Creative work (writing, art, music)
- Reading that feeds the soul
- Prayer or spiritual practice
- Walking in silence
Campbell's key: This is not about productivity. It's about experiencing and bringing forth what you are and what you might be.
Element 5: The Defense
Sacred space must be defended. Threats include:
- Guilt — "I should be doing something useful"
- Urgency — "There's too much to do"
- Others' needs — "They need me"
- Self-sabotage — "This is indulgent"
- Erosion — "Just this once I'll skip it"
The defense: This is not optional. This is where you become who you need to be to serve others. The return requires the withdrawal.

Design Principles
Start Small, Stay Consistent
Better to have 15 minutes daily that you actually honor than an hour weekly that you skip.
Make It Non-Negotiable
Put it in the calendar. Tell people. Protect it like a doctor's appointment.
Expect Nothing, Allow Everything
The inner life speaks when it's ready, not when demanded.
The Space Trains You
Regular use of sacred space develops the capacity to access it. You're training your psyche to know: "This is where we go inward."
Return Matters
The point isn't to stay in sacred space forever. It's to return to the ordinary world replenished, with insight, with energy.

What You Need
Space to return to yourself—to the writer, the thinker, the person who exists beyond "mom" and "employee."
Your Current Constraints
Single parent of two young children. Full-time work. No partner to share the load. Every moment claimed by others.
This is real. I'm not going to pretend you have hidden hours you're wasting. Your constraints are legitimate. But Campbell's work applies even here—especially here. Because you cannot pour from an empty cup.
Your Sacred Space Design
Type: Temporal (carved time in the margins)
When:
Primary: 5:30-6:00am, before children wake
- Yes, this means going to bed earlier. Yes, it's hard. But these thirty minutes, in the dark before the day claims you, are yours.
- This is not "getting up early to be productive." This is sacred withdrawal.
Backup options for days the primary fails:
- First 10 minutes of lunch break, alone
- 10 minutes in parked car before going inside after work
- After children's bedtime (though you may be depleted)
Where:
- Kitchen table, in the dark, with only one candle
- A specific chair that becomes "your chair"
- If weather permits: outside on the porch with tea
The Boundaries:
- Phone stays plugged in elsewhere (not in sight)
- You don't check anything—email, texts, news
- You don't do anything "productive"—no meal prep, no planning
- If a child wakes, you tend to them, then return. The space is patient.
The Ritual:
- Opening: Light the candle. Three deep breaths. Say: "This is my time."
- Closing: Blow out the candle. One breath of gratitude. Say: "I return."
The Purpose:
- Option 1: Write—morning pages, journal, anything
- Option 2: Sit in silence with tea and do nothing
- Option 3: Read something that feeds your soul (not news, not social media)
The purpose is not to accomplish. The purpose is to experience and bring forth what you are.
Protecting the Space
Anticipated threats:
"I'm too tired" — Response: Go to bed 30 minutes earlier. This is non-negotiable rest debt management.
"Kids woke up early" — Response: The backup space activates. Or: even 10 minutes is sacred. Protect what's possible.
"Guilt—I should spend this time being more productive" — Response: You cannot give what you don't have. This is where you refill. Your children need a mother who is a person, not just a function.
"It feels selfish" — Response: Every oxygen mask instruction tells you: put yours on first. Campbell knew: the hero must withdraw before they can return with the boon.
Commitment: Start with three days per week. Not seven. Three. If you succeed, add a fourth. Build the muscle slowly.

The first weeks may feel like you're just sitting in the dark, tired, before another exhausting day. That's okay. You're training your soul to know: there is a place for me. The writer and thinker are still in there. They need to know you haven't forgotten them.
Your sacred space is where you can find yourself again and again.
You haven't lost yourself. You've just had no room to find yourself. Make the room. Even small. Even thirty minutes in candlelight. The space will hold you, and eventually, something will happen there.
