A technique for dismantling ideas, institutions, or positions through ridicule rather than direct argument. Where logic convinces, satire converts. Laughter is the solvent of authority.

When to Use

• When direct argument has failed or would be ignored

Why Satire Works

Authority depends on being taken seriously. The moment a position becomes laughable, it loses its grip. Arguments can be refuted with counter-arguments; ridicule sticks. People forget syllogisms but remember jokes. Satire bypasses the rational defenses people construct around cherished beliefs by coming in through the side door of humor.

Workflow

Step 1: Find the Absurdity

Every flawed position contains the seeds of its own ridicule. Ask:

• What's the gap between official rhetoric and actual practice?
• What would this position look like if taken to its logical extreme?
• What obvious truth does this position require ignoring?
• Who benefits from this being taken seriously?

The absurdity is already there. Your job is to make it visible.

Step 2: Incarnate the Foolishness

Don't argue against abstractions. Create characters, scenarios, or voices that embody the foolishness. A pompous theologian explaining why suffering proves God's love. A bureaucrat earnestly defending absurd procedures. A tyrant explaining how oppression serves the oppressed.

Let the position reveal itself through its own logic, spoken by someone who believes it.

Step 3: Use Their Words Against Them

Quote accurately. The accuracy is what makes it devastating. Don't invent straw men; use their actual arguments, their actual phrases, their actual logic. Then let the audience see where that logic leads.

"I merely repeat what they themselves have said. If it sounds absurd, that is not my doing."

Step 4: Maintain Mock Innocence

Pretend not to understand the obvious. Ask naive questions that expose contradictions. Express puzzlement at things everyone accepts. The satirist plays the fool who, in apparent confusion, stumbles onto the truth that "sophisticated" minds have learned to ignore.

"Forgive me, but I am merely a simple observer who does not understand why..."

Step 5: Assume Intelligence in the Reader

Never explain the joke. Trust your audience to make the connection. The most powerful satirical moment is when readers realize the absurdity themselves. Your job is to arrange the elements; their job is to see the pattern.

Over-explanation kills satire. If they don't get it, either your satire isn't sharp enough or they're not your audience.

Step 6: Leave an Opening for the Reasonable

Attack the extreme, not the general. Attack fanaticism, not faith. Attack tyranny, not governance. Attack the Inquisition, not the search for meaning. This precision accomplishes two things: it makes your critique harder to dismiss as mere hostility, and it creates space for reform rather than total war.

The goal is to change minds, not to win arguments with people who will never change.

Examples of Application

Example 1: Institutional Hypocrisy

Target: An organization preaching values it violates

Satirical approach: Write a glowing press release from the organization announcing new initiatives to combat the very thing they're doing. Make it enthusiastic, detailed, and completely accurate about their stated values. Never mention the contradiction. Let readers supply the irony.

Example 2: Jargon as Obfuscation

Target: Complex language hiding simple self-interest

Satirical approach: Translate the jargon into plain speech, maintaining an air of helpfulness. "What our colleagues in Strategic Resource Optimization mean, if I understand correctly, is that they would like more money while providing fewer services. A perfectly reasonable request once stated clearly."

Example 3: False Expertise

Target: Confident pronouncements on uncertain matters

Satirical approach: Express admiration for the certainty, then list all the other things throughout history that were equally certain. Never draw the conclusion explicitly. End with genuine-seeming appreciation for the courage required to be so confident.

Example 4: Moral Double Standards

Target: Different rules for "us" versus "them"

Satirical approach: Describe identical actions by both groups using the language applied to each. When we do it, it's "enhanced interrogation," "strategic relocation," "preemptive defense." When they do it, it's torture, ethnic cleansing, aggression. Report this without comment, as if it were perfectly natural.

Key Principles

1. Ridicule over argument - Laughter changes minds faster than logic. People will defend positions against criticism that they'll abandon once they become laughable.

2. Show, don't tell - Don't say "this is absurd." Create a situation where the absurdity is self-evident.

3. Precision over broadside - Attack specific failures, not general categories. "Some priests abuse power" cuts deeper than "religion is bad."

4. Economy is power - The shorter the satirical stroke, the sharper it cuts. Trim everything that doesn't serve the effect.

5. Patience in setup - Good satire often requires establishing the target's position fully and fairly before the turn. The more fairly you represent them, the more devastating the exposure.

6. Know when not to use it - Satire works against the powerful and the pompous. It becomes cruelty when aimed at the weak. It becomes propaganda when it lies about its targets. The weapon must be wielded with precision.

Common Pitfalls

• Strawmanning - Distorting the target's position makes your satire easy to dismiss. Use their actual words.
• Preaching - The moment you start explaining why they're wrong, you've stopped being a satirist and become a lecturer.
• Punching down - Satire aimed at the powerless is just cruelty with a smirk.
• Self-congratulation - Satire that mostly demonstrates how clever the satirist is misses the point.
• Rage masquerading as wit - If you're too angry, it shows. Satire requires control.

The Deeper Purpose

Satirical demolition is not nihilism. Behind every effective satire is an implicit vision of how things should be. You tear down so that something better can be built. The mockery of false certainty implies respect for genuine inquiry. The ridicule of hypocrisy implies a world where words and actions might align. The laughter at pretension implies a vision of authentic humanity.

Destruction in service of nothing is vandalism. Destruction in service of a better world is criticism. Know what you're for, even as you attack what you're against.
