A structured approach to distilling complex material to its elegant essence—as simple as possible, but not simpler.

Purpose

Take complex concepts, theories, or bodies of information and find the simplest formulation that preserves essential truth. Cut through unnecessary complexity while avoiding oversimplification that loses meaning.

When to Use

• You need to explain something complex to a non-expert
• You want to understand something deeply (simplification tests understanding)
• You're communicating to diverse audiences
• You need to find the core of a sprawling topic
• You want to test whether you truly understand something

Trigger Phrases:

• "Simplify this for me"
• "What's the essence of...?"
• "How would Einstein explain this?"
• "Make this as simple as possible"
• "What's the one thing I need to understand?"
• "Can you explain this to a child?"

Inputs

The Four-Step Process

Step 1: Identify the Core Insight

Ask: "If someone could only remember one thing, what should it be?"

Strip away:

• Historical context (unless essential to understanding)
• Technical jargon (replace with plain language)
• Edge cases and exceptions (note them, but don't lead with them)
• Procedural details (the "how" often obscures the "what")

What remains should be the irreducible essence—the insight without which the concept collapses.

Test: Can you state the core in one sentence? If not, you haven't found it yet.

Step 2: Create an Accessible Analogy

Find a concrete comparison from everyday experience that captures the essential relationship.

Good analogies are:

• Familiar - Use what people already understand
• Structural - Match the underlying pattern, not surface features
• Scalable - Work at different levels of understanding
• Honest - Don't hide the ways they break down

Test: Does someone who understands the analogy now understand the key relationship in the original concept?

Step 3: Identify What Was Cut

Be explicit about what you've simplified away:

• What nuances exist that the simple version doesn't capture?
• What edge cases break the simple model?
• When does the simplified version give wrong answers?

This serves two purposes:

• Intellectual honesty (you know what you're leaving out)
• Pathways for deeper learning (the interested can explore further)

Step 4: Test for "Too Simple"

Einstein said "as simple as possible, but not simpler." The "not simpler" is crucial.

Ask:

• Does the simplified version lead to wrong conclusions in common cases?

• Has essential meaning been lost, not just complexity?

If yes, you've gone too far. Add back the minimum needed to restore truth.

The "So What?" Chain

Keep asking "So what?" until you reach something that matters to the listener.

The Analogy Bridge

Find something the audience already understands, then show how the new concept is like it:

• "Gravity is like a bowling ball on a stretched rubber sheet"

The Feynman Test

Named for Richard Feynman: Explain it to a child. If you can't, you don't understand it.

• Use only common words
• Build from what they already know
• Accept the challenge rather than dismissing it as impossible

The Elimination Method

Start with the full complex version. Remove pieces one by one. When removal breaks understanding, you've found something essential. When removal doesn't hurt, that piece was complexity, not essence.

Outputs

When synthesizing for simplicity, provide:

1. The Essence (One sentence capturing the core insight)
2. The Analogy (A concrete comparison from everyday experience)
3. The Expanded Explanation (2-3 paragraphs for those wanting more)
4. What This Simplification Leaves Out (Honest acknowledgment of omitted complexity)
5. The Danger Zone (Where the simple version gives wrong answers)

Example Application

Input: "Simplify quantum entanglement for me"

Simplicity Synthesis:

The Essence: Two particles can be connected so that measuring one instantly tells you about the other, no matter how far apart they are—like having two magic coins that always land on opposite sides.

The Analogy: Imagine putting one red and one blue marble into a bag, then without looking, putting one marble in each of two boxes. Ship one box to Tokyo, keep one in New York. When you open the New York box and see red, you instantly know—with certainty—that Tokyo has blue. No signal traveled; the connection was established when they were together.

The Expanded Explanation: Quantum entanglement occurs when particles interact in ways that link their quantum states. After separation, measuring a property of one particle (like spin direction) instantly determines the corresponding property of its partner, regardless of distance. This isn't communication—no information travels faster than light. The correlation existed from the moment of entanglement; measurement simply reveals it.

Einstein called this "spooky action at a distance" because it seemed to violate locality—the principle that distant objects can't instantaneously affect each other. But entanglement doesn't actually transmit information faster than light. You can't use it to send messages. It's correlation, not causation.

What This Leaves Out:
