Step 1: 1. Identify the Human Center

Find or create the individual who embodies the statistic:

• Not "15% of children go hungry" but "Maria, age 8, knows exactly which days the school serves breakfast"
• Not "healthcare costs" but "Mr. Jennings choosing between insulin and electricity"

Give them:

• A name
• A specific age and circumstance
• A particular detail that makes them irreplaceable

Step 2: 2. Show the System Through Daily Reality

Don't explain the system--show its effects:

• The form that must be filled out
• The waiting room where time disappears
• The phone call that never gets returned
• The rule that makes no human sense

Let the reader feel the weight of bureaucracy through accumulated detail.

Step 3: 3. Use Children as Moral Touchstones

Dickens knew that children reveal what adults have learned to ignore:

• Show the child's innocent question that exposes absurdity
• Describe what the child must learn too young
• Let the child's suffering cut through defensive rationalizations

Step 4: 4. Build Through Specific Detail

Replace abstractions with things that can be seen and touched:

• Not "poverty" but "the shoes with cardboard insoles"
• Not "institutional neglect" but "the three-hour wait in the plastic chair"
• Not "food insecurity" but "the cupboard with only condiments"

Step 5: 5. Connect Individual to System

Make explicit (but briefly) how this one story multiplies:

• "Maria is one of 12 million children who..."
• "Mr. Jennings joins the 30% of diabetics who..."

The individual earns the statistic's attention.

By day eight, Margaret had memorized the hold music. By day ten, she had named the automated voice ("Patricia," she called her, with a bitterness that surprised her family). By day twelve, she stopped eating much. By day fourteen--the average, the statistic, the policy-compliant processing time--the authorization arrived.

The oncologist's office called with the appointment. Margaret's daughter answered.

"I'm sorry," Lisa said, "but my mother isn't available. She passed yesterday."

Fourteen days. The system worked exactly as designed.
