When to Use

Invoke when someone:

• Struggles to let go of something (possession, relationship, outcome, habit)
• Recognizes an attachment is harming their spiritual life
• Feels bound or captive to a desire
• Experiences anxiety about potential loss
• Is attached to spiritual experiences or consolations themselves
• Asks "How do I stop wanting this so much?"

Step 1: Identify the Attachment

Clarify what the person is attached to:

Categories of Attachment:

• Material goods — possessions, money, comfort, security
• Relationships — particular persons, their approval, their presence
• Reputation — how others perceive them, honor, status
• Outcomes — specific results from actions, plans working out
• Experiences — pleasure, comfort, absence of pain
• Spiritual consolations — feelings of God's presence, insights, peace in prayer
• Self-image — ideas about who they are, spiritual identity, progress

Ask: "What specifically do you find yourself unable to release? Where does your mind return against your will?"

Step 2: Distinguish Voluntary from Natural Appetite

John of the Cross makes a crucial distinction:

Natural Appetites:

• Arise spontaneously (involuntary)
• Not sinful in themselves
• Cannot be eliminated
• Examples: attraction to beauty, desire for food, noticing someone's approval

Voluntary Appetites:

• Arise from consent and pursuit
• These are what bind the soul
• Can be mortified through practice
• Examples: seeking and dwelling on approval, pursuing possessions beyond need, cultivating attachment

The question is not whether desire arises, but whether it is consented to and pursued.

Ask: "Is this something that simply arises in you, or do you actively pursue it, dwell on it, arrange your life around it?"

Step 3: Understand How It Binds

Attachments bind the soul in three ways, corresponding to the three higher faculties:

Intellect (knowing):

• The mind constantly returns to the object
• Thinking patterns organized around it
• Difficulty focusing on anything else
• What the attachment promises occupies mental space

Memory (possessing):

• Holding onto the object mentally even in absence
• Fear of losing it
• Comparing present to when you had/will have it
• Identity tied to possession or relationship

Will (desiring):

• Energy directed toward obtaining or maintaining
• Decisions shaped by the attachment
• Other goods subordinated to this one
• The will is captured, not free

Ask: "How does this attachment affect your thinking? Your sense of what you possess or could lose? Your choices and priorities?"

Step 4: Apply the Nada Principle

John's teaching is not suppression but replacement—desire redirected, not eliminated:

"To come to taste all, desire to taste nothing. To come to possess all, desire to possess nothing. To come to be all, desire to be nothing. To come to know all, desire to know nothing."

The Logic of Nada:

• Attachment to any particular good excludes the infinite Good
• The soul has finite capacity; what is filled with creatures has no room for God
• Desiring nothing particular opens the soul to receive everything
• This is not nihilism but radical openness to the infinite

Practical Application:

• The goal is not to stop caring but to hold loosely
• Not indifference but ordered love—loving in God rather than instead of God
• Freedom from rather than freedom to—release enables true possession
• The attached soul cannot receive because its hands are full

Reframe: "The attachment promises you something. What does it promise? Can any finite thing deliver what the infinite alone can give?"

Step 5: Practice Mortification

Mortification is not punishment but training—the gradual reduction of the attachment's grip:

Active Mortification (what you do):

1. Awareness practice: Notice when the mind turns to the attachment. Don't fight—observe. Name it: "There is the appetite again."

2. Small denials: Begin with minor manifestations. If attached to food, skip a favorite item occasionally. If attached to approval, let a compliment pass without dwelling.

3. Refrain from feeding: Don't pursue the object actively. If attached to a person's attention, stop seeking it. If attached to an outcome, stop checking for signs.

4. Redirect desire: When the appetite arises, turn attention to God. Not suppression but substitution. "Lord, You are what I truly want."

5. Embrace deprivation: When circumstances naturally remove the object, receive this as gift rather than loss. The discomfort is the feeling of freedom forming.

Passive Mortification (what God does):

Sometimes God removes what we are attached to. This is painful but effective. The soul's task is to accept rather than grasp, to trust rather than resist.

"If what you describe is being taken from you despite your efforts to hold it—consider whether God is doing the work you could not do yourself."

Step 6: Replace with Theological Virtue

As attachment loosens, the vacated space is filled by faith, hope, and love:

Faith fills the intellect:

• Instead of thinking about the object, the mind rests in God who cannot be fully thought
• Darkness becomes comfortable; not-knowing becomes trust
• The intellect freed from circling an object can attend to the infinite

Hope fills the memory:

• Instead of clinging to possessions (actual or desired), the memory empties
• What was held is released; what was feared lost is surrendered
• The memory freed from possessing can receive genuine abundance

Love fills the will:

• Instead of desiring this particular good, the will desires Good itself
• Energy previously directed at maintaining attachment is freed
• The will no longer divided can love purely

Key Principles

1. Attachment is the problem, not the object: Good things can be held wrongly. The issue is how the soul relates, not what it relates to.

2. Small attachments matter: "A bird held by a slender thread is as imprisoned as one held by a thick cord." The size of the attachment is irrelevant; the binding is the same.

3. Spiritual attachments are dangerous: Attachment to spiritual experiences, religious identity, or consolations is particularly subtle and binding.

4. Not suppression but redirection: The soul cannot not-desire; desire must be channeled, not eliminated.

5. Pain is information: The intensity of pain when an attachment is threatened reveals its grip.

6. Nada is the path to todo: Emptiness is not the goal but the means. The goal is fullness—receiving the infinite.

7. This is not once but ongoing: Detachment is practiced, not achieved once and maintained.

Common Attachments and Their Mortification

Sample Application

User states: "I know I shouldn't, but I'm completely attached to my business succeeding. I think about it constantly. Every decision is about making it work. I pray about it but I'm really just asking God to help me get what I want."

Application:

1. Identify: "You've named it clearly: attachment to your business succeeding. This isn't the same as wanting it to succeed—that's natural. The attachment is that it captures your thinking, shapes all decisions, and has become what you really pray for."

2. Distinguish: "The natural appetite—desiring your work to prosper—is not itself the problem. The voluntary appetite—organizing your entire interior life around it—is what binds you."

3. Understand the binding: "Your intellect constantly returns to it. Your memory holds it—imagining success, fearing failure. Your will is captured—other goods are subordinated to this one. The soul is not free."

4. Apply nada: "What does business success promise you? Security? Significance? Proof of worth? Whatever it promises, can any business deliver what only the infinite can give? The attachment says: 'This is what I need to be complete.' But no finite thing completes an infinite longing."

5. Mortification practice:

   • "Notice when your mind turns to the business. Don't fight—observe. 'There is the appetite.'"
   • "Practice small detachments: skip one check of metrics per day. Let one email wait. Make one decision without calculating its impact on success."
   • "When you pray, don't pray for the business. Pray for God, even if you don't feel interested in God without the business. This reveals the attachment's depth."
   • "Imagine the business failing—not to fear it but to practice: 'Even then, God remains. Even then, I am held.'"

6. Reframe: "The goal is not to stop caring about your business but to hold it freely. You can work hard for its success while being willing to receive failure. That is freedom. What you have now is not ownership—it is being owned."
