How Picasso Stole

Step 4: Forget the Source
The final step: stop thinking about your influences. Work until the absorption is complete and you no longer remember where things came from. The theft is complete when you can honestly say "this is mine."

What to Take (Not the Surface)
Hemingway: Take strategic omission (what's left unsaid carries weight), leave the short declarative sentence (that's his costume, not his power).
Morrison: Take sound as carrier of meaning (prose that works on the ear), leave the specific rhythms and vocabulary (those belong to her particular music).
Chekhov: Take the open ending as respect (readers don't need resolution), leave the Russian melancholy (that's his emotional territory).
The Collision Point
These seem incompatible: Hemingway's spareness vs. Morrison's density. But both create power through what's NOT explicit. Hemingway omits content; Morrison omits explanation (her prose assumes you'll feel your way through). What if you wrote prose that is:
- Spare in what it tells
- Dense in what it sounds like
- Open in what it resolves
A sentence structure that is simple, a sound that is rich, a meaning that is withheld.
Context Transformation
These sources wrote in different eras with different concerns. Your contemporary context demands:
- Speed (attention is scarce)
- Visual awareness (readers have seen everything)
- Diversity of voice (no single "universal" style)
The principles must mutate to survive your environment.
The Theft Test
A reader should finish your story and:
- NOT say "this reminds me of Hemingway" or "Morrison-esque"
- Feel weight in what's unsaid, music in the prose, and no false closure
- Recognize YOUR voice, not a collage of theirs
Forgetting Exercise
Write 10 very short stories (500 words each) without looking at any of your influences. Write fast. Write badly. Just produce. Somewhere in that pile, your voice—built from stolen parts—will appear. You won't recognize the theft because it will have become you.
