If unsure: Ask yourself "Am I attacking an expectation, or attacking people who fail?" Only attack expectations.

When to Use

Trigger Conditions (use automatically when detected):

• Content involves societal expectations about gender roles (housewife, provider, mother, father)
• Discussion of "perfect" performance standards (Pinterest-perfect parenting, Instagram-worthy life, work-life balance)
• Pressure to excel at something arbitrary or impossible
• Content could benefit from showing the expectation is ridiculous, not the people trying to meet it
• Need to create permission for audience to admit they're struggling with unrealistic demands

Examples of valid triggers:

• "How to be the perfect parent"
• "Maintaining a clean home while working full-time"
• "Having it all: career, family, fitness, social life"
• "The expectation to always be available/productive"
• Any discussion of role performance where the standard is unrealistic

Not valid for:

• Actual skill deficits that need improvement (this is comedy, not advice)
• Professional competencies where failure has serious consequences
• Disabilities or genuine limitations

Step 1: Identify the Expectation

Extract the specific societal standard being imposed:

• What is the audience supposed to be good at?
• What is the "perfect" version of this role?
• Who benefits from people meeting this standard?
• What happens if you don't meet it? (guilt, shame, judgment)

Example:

• Expectation: "A good mother makes homemade, organic, Instagram-worthy meals every day"
• Perfect version: Pinterest mother with color-coordinated lunch boxes
• Who benefits: Food industry, social media platforms, comparison culture
• Failure consequence: Guilt, feeling inadequate

Step 2: Invert It Completely

Create the opposite of the expectation in the most extreme way possible:

• Instead of meeting the standard, fail spectacularly
• Make the failure specific and visual, not vague
• Push it beyond realistic into absurd territory
• The absurdity signals "this is performance/commentary, not reality"

Example:

• Perfect: Homemade organic meals
• Inversion: "I don't cook. I serve cereal for dinner. The box is the main course."
• More extreme: "My kids think 'home cooking' means I heated up the take-out container."
• Absurd territory: "The smoke detector is my kitchen timer. When it goes off, dinner's ready."

Step 3: Make It Visual and Specific

Replace abstract incompetence with concrete disasters:

• Not "I'm bad at cooking" → "The fire department knows my address by heart"
• Not "My house is messy" → "I found a science experiment growing in the fridge. It introduced itself."
• Not "I'm disorganized" → "I organized my files by throwing them in the air and seeing where they landed"

Specificity checklist:

• Could you draw/photograph this scenario?
• Is there a specific action, object, or consequence?
• Would someone hearing this see a mental image?

Step 4: Stack Multiple Examples (Escalation)

Build 3-5 examples of failure, each more absurd than the last:

1. Baseline failure - Clearly incompetent
2. Escalated failure - More extreme
3. Absurd failure - Beyond plausibility
4. Catastrophic failure (optional) - Impossibly extreme
5. Meta-commentary (optional) - Step back and name what you're doing

Example sequence (housekeeping):

Step 5: Add Joy Signal (Liberation Not Defeat)

End with signal that this is liberation, not actual failure:

• Laugh at the absurdity (written "CACKLE!" or equivalent)
• State the underlying truth: the expectation was ridiculous
• Give permission: "You don't have to do this perfectly either"
• Show confidence: "And I'm still here/successful/fine"

Joy signal examples:

• "And you know what? I'm still invited to family gatherings!"
• "Turns out the 'perfect' standard was invented by people selling cleaning products"

• Punch up at standards, never down at people struggling to meet them
• Make it obviously absurd, so audience knows it's performance/commentary
• Include permission statement, so audience feels released from the expectation

Success Criteria

Application is successful when:

• The expectation being critiqued is clearly identified
• 3-5 incompetence examples provided, each more absurd than the last
• Examples are specific and visual, not vague
• Joy/liberation signal is present (laugh, permission statement, confidence)
• The underlying critique of the expectation is apparent (even if not stated explicitly)
• Audience would recognize this as commentary on standards, not mockery of people
• The absurdity makes it clear this is performance/exaggeration, not actual failure

Why This Works:

Phyllis Diller discovered that failing spectacularly at the 1950s housewife role—and laughing about it—gave other women permission to admit the expectations were impossible. By making incompetence joyful rather than shameful, she exposed that the standards themselves were the problem, not the women who couldn't meet them.

The key insight: When you perform failure with total commitment and obvious joy, the audience realizes you're not actually failing—you're refusing to play a rigged game. The incompetence is strategic, not genuine. And once they see that, they can question why they've been trying so hard to meet the expectation in the first place.
