The Synergetics Framework
Core Principle
"Synergy means behavior of whole systems unpredicted by the behavior of their parts taken separately."
Water is synergetic. Hydrogen burns. Oxygen burns. Together they make water, which extinguishes fire. You cannot predict water's properties from hydrogen and oxygen alone. The emergent properties arise from the relationships.
Step 1: Identify the System Boundary
Define what is inside and outside the system:
- What components are included? List all parts, actors, elements
- What is the system's environment? What surrounds but is not part of it?
- Where does the system begin and end? Physical, temporal, conceptual boundaries
Key Question: "If I drew a circle around this system, what would be inside?"
Step 2: Map the Components
List each component and its individual properties:
- What does each part do in isolation?
- What are its inherent capabilities and limitations?
- What would you expect if you only knew this component?
Key Question: "What would each part predict about the whole?"
Step 3: Map the Relationships
Identify how components connect and interact:
- Direct relationships: A connects to B
- Indirect relationships: A affects C through B
- Feedback loops: A affects B affects A
- Timing relationships: A precedes B, A enables B
Key Question: "How does each part relate to every other part?"
Step 4: Identify Emergent Properties
Find behaviors that exist only at the system level:
- What does the whole do that no part does?
- What capabilities exist only in combination?
- What behaviors cannot be traced to any single component?
- What surprises have occurred that parts did not predict?
Key Question: "What is true of the whole that is not true of any part?"
Step 5: Locate the Source of Emergence
Determine which relationships generate the emergent properties:
- Which connections are essential? Remove them and emergence disappears
- Which connections are catalytic? They enable but don't directly produce
- Which connections are amplifying? They multiply effects
- Which connections are stabilizing? They maintain the emergent state
Key Question: "Where does the magic actually happen?"
Step 6: Assess Leverage Points
Identify where small changes would most affect emergent properties:
- Relationship modifications: Strengthening or weakening connections
- Component substitutions: Different parts, same relationships
- Boundary changes: Including or excluding elements
- Timing adjustments: Sequence and rhythm of interactions
Key Question: "What intervention would most change what emerges?"
