Design physical and digital spaces that create emotional belonging between home and work contexts, based on Howard Schultz's methodology for transforming Starbucks into community anchors.

The Third Place Framework

Origin

Sociologist Ray Oldenburg (1989) defined the "third place" as spaces beyond home (first place) and work (second place) where community happens. Howard Schultz transformed this into a design methodology.

Schultz's Definition

"I've never thought of the third place just as a physical environment. For me, the third place has always been a feeling. An emotion. An aspiration that all people can come together and be uplifted as a result of a sense of belonging."

Workflow

Step 1: 1. Assess Current State

Evaluate the space against the seven third place elements:

Score each element 1-5:

• 5: Exceptional - creates delight and differentiation
• 4: Strong - clearly intentional and effective
• 3: Adequate - present but not memorable
• 2: Weak - exists but feels like afterthought
• 1: Missing - not present or actively negative

Step 2: 2. Identify Belonging Barriers

Look for elements that prevent belonging:

• Transactional pressure (speed over connection)
• Exclusionary design (who doesn't feel welcome?)
• Sterile or generic environments
• Missing personal recognition
• No staying infrastructure
• Forced efficiency over comfort

Step 3: 3. Design for Belonging

For each weak element, create specific improvements:

Comfort: What invites people to stay? Recognition: How are people acknowledged as individuals? Ritual: What repeatable moments create meaning? Community: How do strangers connect? Sensory: What makes this place feel like THIS place?

Step 4: 4. Test the Third Place Promise

Apply Schultz's test: "At home, you're part of a family. At work you're part of a company. And somewhere in between there's a place where you can sit back and be yourself."

Ask: Can people BE THEMSELVES here? What prevents it?
