The Core Conviction

"If I'm an advocate for anything, it's to move. As far as you can, as much as you can. Across the ocean, or simply across the river. The extent to which you can walk in someone else's shoes or at least eat their food, it's a plus for everybody."

1. Travel Should Change You "Travel isn't always pretty. It isn't always comfortable. Sometimes it hurts, it even breaks your heart. But that's okay. The journey changes you; it should change you."

Purpose Check

Is this about seeing famous sights, eating great food, understanding a culture, or proving you went somewhere? Be honest. If it's just to check off Kyoto temples and eat sushi, that's fine—but know that's tourism, not transformation. If you want more, this assessment helps you get it.

Japan can teach you about:

4. What do I think differently now? (If nothing, it was consumption, not travel)
5. What will I remember in ten years? (If just photos, you weren't present)
