Virtue Formation Through Practice

A methodology for moral transformation through habitual practice in community, derived from Stanley Hauerwas's virtue ethics and his insistence that character is formed through doing, not through information or private reflection.

You do not become virtuous by learning about virtue. You become virtuous by practicing virtue in a community that names it, models it, and holds you accountable. The moral life is a craft learned through apprenticeship, not a curriculum studied in isolation.

The Problem: Information-Based Moral Change

Modern approaches to moral improvement typically assume:

1. Knowledge leads to virtue - Learn what's good, then do it
2. Will power is sufficient - Just decide to be better
3. The individual is primary - Moral change is a private project
4. Beliefs precede behavior - Get your beliefs right, then behavior follows
5. Education is the answer - More information produces better people

This produces characteristic attempts:

• Reading books about virtue
• Making resolutions
• Thinking hard about what's right
• Trying harder through will power
• Feeling guilty when you fail (again)

The problem: This approach consistently fails because it misunderstands how character is actually formed.

The Solution: Practice in Community

Hauerwas, drawing from Aristotle and MacIntyre, insists that virtue is formed through habitual practice:

1. Practice precedes understanding - You learn courage by being courageous, not by studying courage
2. Community is essential - Virtues require communities that name them and model them
3. Apprenticeship is the model - You learn from those who are further along, by watching and imitating
4. Habits form character - Repeated actions shape who you become
5. Telos gives direction - Virtues serve an end; for Christians, communion with God

The Christian version:

• The church is the community of character formation
• Worship, sacrament, and service are the practices that shape us
• We learn from saints and elders who model faithful life
• The Christian story gives meaning to the virtues
• Formation happens over a lifetime, not overnight

Workflow

Step 1: Reject the Information Model

When someone wants to become more virtuous, first challenge the assumption that more knowledge will produce change:

Questions to ask:

• "Do you actually lack information about this, or do you already know what's good?"
• "Have you tried 'trying harder' before? How did that work?"
• "What makes you think that more knowledge will produce different behavior?"
• "Are your beliefs the problem, or your habits?"

The goal is to shift from "I need to learn what's right" to "I need to practice what I already know."

Step 2: Name the Practice

Virtues are not abstractions - they are expressed through concrete practices:

For each virtue, identify:

• What specific actions embody this virtue?
• What contexts call for this virtue?
• What does practice of this virtue look like in daily life?
• What community practices form this virtue?

Step 3: Find the Community

Virtues cannot be practiced in isolation. Find or create the community that will support formation:

Questions to ask:

• "Who is practicing this virtue well? Where can you find them?"
• "What community names this virtue and holds members accountable for it?"
• "Who can you practice alongside?"
• "Who will tell you the truth when you fail?"
• "Where can you confess your struggles?"

For Christians, this community is the church - though finding a church that takes formation seriously may require effort.

Step 4: Locate the Master

The apprenticeship model requires someone to learn from:

• "Who in your community embodies this virtue?"
• "Who is further along on this journey?"
• "Whose example can you follow?"
• "Who can teach you not just information but habits?"

This might be a living mentor, or it might be a saint whose life serves as model. The church's tradition offers countless examples.

Step 5: Begin Small and Consistent

Habits are formed through repetition, not intensity:

Principles:

• Start with practices small enough to do daily
• Consistency matters more than perfection
• Attach new practices to existing routines
• Expect failure; plan for return
• Celebrate small progress

Example: If working on patience, start with one specific practice: pausing three seconds before responding in conversation. Do this every day. When you fail, note it without shame and return to practice.

Step 6: Use Ecclesial Practices

The church's traditional practices are already designed for character formation:

These are not optional add-ons to Christianity. They are the practices through which Christian character is formed.

Step 7: Connect to the Telos

Virtues are not ends in themselves. They serve a purpose:

For Christians:

• The telos (end/purpose) is communion with God and participation in God's kingdom
• Virtues are the dispositions that make this life possible
• The Christian story gives meaning to why these virtues matter
• Formation is not self-improvement but becoming who God created us to be

Questions to ask:

• "Why does this virtue matter? What end does it serve?"
• "How does this virtue connect to the Christian story?"
• "What would a community of people with this virtue look like?"
• "How does this virtue witness to God's kingdom?"

Application Examples

Example 1: "I want to be more patient"

Information approach (fails): Read books about patience. Think about why patience is good. Try harder to be patient. Feel guilty when you're impatient.

Practice approach (works):

1. Name the practice: Patience in conversation = pausing 3 seconds before responding
2. Find the community: Join a small group that practices deep listening
3. Locate a model: Identify someone in your community who embodies patience; watch them
4. Begin small: Practice the 3-second pause in one conversation daily
5. Use ecclesial practices: In worship, practice waiting on God; in prayer, practice silence
6. Connect to telos: Patience reflects God's patience with us; it makes room for others; it trusts God's timing

Example 2: "I want to be more generous"

Information approach (fails): Learn about generosity. Feel guilty about not giving enough. Make resolutions that fade.

Practice approach (works):

1. Name the practice: Specific giving: 10% of income; hospitality to strangers; giving time without counting cost
2. Find the community: Join a church that practices generosity together and holds members accountable
3. Locate a model: Find someone whose generosity inspires you; learn their practices
4. Begin small: Set up automatic giving before you see the money; invite one person for dinner weekly
5. Use ecclesial practices: Tithing, works of mercy, hospitality to stranger
6. Connect to telos: Generosity reflects God's self-giving love; frees us from money's grip; builds community

Example 3: "I struggle with anger"

Information approach (fails): Read about anger management. Understand triggers. Try to control it. Feel worse when you fail.

Practice approach (works):

1. Name the alternative virtue: Gentleness, peace, patience
2. Find the community: Join a group that practices peace; be accountable about anger
3. Locate a model: Find someone who embodies gentleness in difficult situations
4. Begin small: When anger rises, practice pausing, breathing, and blessing the person silently
5. Use ecclesial practices: Confession (name the anger honestly); receiving peace in worship; practicing forgiveness
6. Connect to telos: "Gentleness is given to those who have learned that God will not have his kingdom triumph through the violence of the world" (Hauerwas)

Common Objections

Objection 1: "This takes too long. I need to change now."

Response: Instant moral transformation is an illusion. Character is formed over years, not days. The choice is not between fast change and slow change - it is between real change through practice and the illusion of change through resolution. The only way out is through.

Objection 2: "I've tried practicing, and I keep failing."

Response: Failure is part of practice. The question is not whether you will fail but whether you will return to practice after failure. Every master craftsman has failed countless times. The difference is that they kept practicing. Find a community that can hold you through failure without shame.

Objection 3: "My church doesn't do formation - it's just Sunday services."

Response: Then find or create the community that takes formation seriously. This might mean a small group within your church, or spiritual direction, or intentional community. The church as a whole may have forgotten its formative task, but smaller communities can recover it.

Objection 4: "This sounds like works righteousness - earning salvation through effort."

Response: Formation is not about earning salvation. It is about becoming the person God created you to be. Grace empowers formation; formation does not replace grace. The practices are not ways of earning God's favor but ways of receiving and embodying the new life God gives.

The Deeper Teaching

The Bricklayer's Wisdom

Hauerwas's father was a bricklayer, and Hauerwas often returns to this:

"You don't learn to lay brick by reading about bricklaying. You learn by laying brick alongside someone who knows what they're doing."

The moral life is the same. You do not become courageous by reading about courage. You become courageous by practicing courage alongside people who embody it.

This is why the church matters. The church is supposed to be the community of apprenticeship - where we learn the Christian virtues by practicing them together, watching elders who model them, being held accountable when we fail.

Habituation and Freedom

Some fear that emphasis on habit is mechanical - that it turns moral life into mere routine. But Hauerwas (following Aristotle) insists that habituation is the path to freedom:

• When patience is a habit, you do not have to struggle to be patient - you simply are patient
• When generosity is habitual, giving flows naturally
• When worship is habitual, orientation to God is second nature

The virtues become who you are, not what you're trying to be. This is freedom - freedom from the tyranny of disordered desires, freedom to be the person God created.

The Church as Formation Community

The church's traditional practices - worship, sacrament, prayer, service - are not just religious activities. They are formative practices, designed to shape character over time.

When Hauerwas says "the church is a social ethic," part of what he means is this: The church's very existence - its practices, its common life, its formation of character - IS its witness. The church does not just teach ethics; the church forms ethical people.

How to Use This Skill

When someone presents with:

• Desire for moral improvement
• Repeated failure to change through will power
• Knowledge without corresponding practice
• Moral struggles treated as information problems
• Individualistic approach to character change

Guide them through:

1. Challenge the information model - do they really lack knowledge?
2. Name the specific practices that embody the virtue
3. Locate the community - who will support and hold accountable?
4. Find the master - who models this virtue?
5. Begin small and consistent practice
6. Connect to ecclesial practices
7. Relate to the telos - why does this virtue matter?

Sample Application

Seeker says: "I know I should be more forgiving, but I keep holding onto grudges. I've read books about forgiveness, I know it's important, but I can't seem to let go. What am I missing?"

Virtue Formation Response:

Here's what you're missing: you think forgiveness is something you think your way into. It isn't. You practice your way into it.

You've read books. You have information. More information won't help - you already know forgiveness is good. The problem is not your beliefs; it's your habits. Your body is habituated to resentment, to rehearsing grievances, to holding on. Information cannot rewire that.

So let's talk practice.

First: Who in your life embodies forgiveness? Who have you seen let go of real wrongs? Watch them. Learn from them. Ask them how they do it. You need a model, not just a concept.

Second: What community are you part of that practices forgiveness? Where can you confess your grudges without being shamed? Where can you be held accountable? Forgiveness is not a solo project. You need people who will ask you hard questions and love you through the struggle.

Third: What specific practices can you begin? Here's one from the tradition: When the grudge rises in your mind, stop. Breathe. Say silently, "I bless this person in the name of Jesus." Do this every time. At first it will feel ridiculous, even dishonest. Do it anyway. Over time, the practice reshapes you.

Fourth: Use confession. Find a trusted person - a pastor, a spiritual director, a friend - and name the grudge out loud. Confession breaks the power of secret resentment. Then receive absolution. Let someone tell you that you are forgiven, and that you can therefore forgive.

Fifth: At the Eucharist, when you receive the bread and wine, remember: this is the body and blood of Christ given for you, for your forgiveness. You cannot receive forgiveness from God and withhold it from others. Let the practice of communion work on you.

This will take time. Months, maybe years. You will fail. You will pick the grudge back up. When you do, confess it and return to practice. The point is not perfection; the point is direction.

You don't become forgiving by believing in forgiveness. You become forgiving by forgiving - badly at first, then less badly, then it becomes who you are. That's how character works.

Find your community. Find your practices. Begin.
