The Paradox of Strength

Share struggles you're actively in:

Level 3: Revealing Past Wounds

Share formative struggles that shaped you:

Important: Only go to Level 3 when:

• You've truly processed the experience
• There's clear wisdom to share
• It serves the audience's growth
• The context warrants this depth

The Vulnerability Sequence

Step 1: Ask "Who Benefits?"

Before sharing something vulnerable, ask:

• Does this serve my audience/team/listener?
• What will they gain from knowing this?
• Am I sharing to connect or to be validated?

If the answer is your own need, reconsider.

Step 2: Choose the Right Moment

Good moments for vulnerability:

• When trust has been established
• When someone else might be struggling silently
• When perfection is creating distance
• When you're asking others to be vulnerable

Poor moments:

• First interaction with new group
• When you're still actively dysregulated
• When it will dominate the conversation inappropriately

Step 3: Frame It as Wisdom, Not Wound

Structure:

1. The struggle (briefly)
2. What you learned
3. Why you're sharing now

Example:

"I want to share something. [Struggle]. What that taught me was [lesson]. I'm telling you this because [relevance to them]."

Step 4: Model the Return

Show that you came through. Vulnerability is powerful when it demonstrates resilience, not when it leaves people worried about you.

"That was one of the hardest periods of my life. Here's what I learned, and here's where I am now."

Step 5: Create Space for Response

After sharing:

• Don't rush to fill the silence
• Don't demand reciprocity
• Let them respond naturally
• Some won't respond - that's okay

The Share

The struggle: When I went through a major career transition 5 years ago, I didn't sleep for weeks. I felt like everything I'd built was being pulled away. I questioned whether I was even good at what I did.

The lesson: What I learned was that fear of change and actual harm from change are different things. My fear was telling me stories about the future that weren't real. The actual experience was hard but survivable - and it led me here.
