Tell a story that seems embarrassing, then reveal it gets worse, then worse again. Each level of vulnerability earns more trust and bigger laughs. The full truth is always funnier and more connecting than the partial truth.
When to Use
- User says "This is embarrassing, but..."
- User wants to share something vulnerable without seeming pathetic
- User needs to build trust through progressive disclosure
- When the partial story is less interesting than the full disaster
- When oversharing strategically will create connection
- When transforming shame into material

Workflow
Step 1: Establish the Initial Vulnerability
Start with something that seems embarrassing but is relatively safe. This is the entry point - it should make the audience lean in, not recoil.
Characteristics of good openers:
- Relatable enough to hook
- Embarrassing enough to signal honesty
- Safe enough not to trigger immediate discomfort
- Clear enough to set up escalation
Step 2: Reveal It Gets Worse
Add a layer that makes the initial disclosure seem mild. This is the "but wait, there's more" moment. The audience should think "oh no" while also leaning in harder.
Escalation techniques:
- Duration: "For six months"
- Frequency: "Every single day"
- Consequences: "And then I got fired"
- Complicity: "And I knew the whole time"
Step 3: Hit the Real Depth
This is the level most people would never admit. It should feel genuinely risky. The audience should be slightly uncomfortable and very connected.
Signs you've hit the right depth:
- You feel exposed writing/saying it
- It's the part you'd normally leave out
- It's where the real lesson or recognition lives
- It's what makes the story actually true
Step 4: Land with Recognition or Absurdity
Don't leave the audience in the pit. Give them somewhere to land - either shared recognition ("You've done this too") or comedic absurdity ("So that's why I'm banned from Trader Joe's").
