Writing Without the Gaze

Toni Morrison rejected "the white gaze"—the pressure to filter Black experience through a white perspective:

"What I'm interested in is writing without the gaze, without the white gaze. In so many earlier books by African-American writers, particularly the men, I felt that they were not writing to me."

The gaze applies beyond race. Any external audience that demands:

• Explanation - Defining what should be assumed
• Translation - Making the specific "universal"
• Performance - Presenting identity for consumption
• Validation - Seeking approval from those outside

Step 1: Identify the Gaze

Ask:

• Who are you unconsciously writing to?
• What are you explaining that your people would never need explained?
• Where are you translating what should remain untranslated?
• What approval are you seeking that costs your truth?

Warning signs:

• Phrases like "In my culture..." or "For those who don't know..."
• Softening, hedging, or providing context for outsiders
• Choosing generic terms over specific ones
• Anticipating objections from people who don't matter

Step 2: Name Your People

Morrison was explicit: "I wrote for black people."

Ask:

• Who are your people? (Community, not just demographics)
• What do they already know that you don't need to say?
• What language do you share that outsiders wouldn't understand?
• What would make them recognize themselves in your work?

Morrison's insight: "I never asked Tolstoy to write for me, a little colored girl in Lorain, Ohio. I never asked Joyce not to mention Catholicism or the world of Dublin."

You owe no explanation to those who never asked about you.

Step 3: Refuse to Translate

Translation is a form of erasure. It replaces the specific with the generic.

Instead of:

• Defining terms → Use them as if the reader knows
• Providing context → Trust the reader to enter your world
• Explaining customs → Let them exist without justification
• Universalizing → Honor the particular

Morrison's approach: Write as your grandmother would tell the story—not explaining that the pot is for cooking, not defining what church means, not translating the names.

Step 4: Reclaim the Center

You are not "diverse." You are not "other." You are the center of your story.

Ask:

• What if no one outside this community ever read this?
• What would you write if you had nothing to prove?
• What becomes possible when you stop justifying your existence?

Morrison's insight: "My world did not shrink because I was a Black female writer. It just got bigger."

Refusing the gaze does not limit your audience—it liberates your voice.

Step 5: Grant Permission

Many writers wait for permission to center their own experience. You must grant it yourself.

The permission:

• You do not need to explain yourself
• You do not need to be understood by everyone
• Your specificity is not a barrier
• Your voice is enough as it is
• The story deserves to exist—not because others need it, but because it is true

Constraints

• Honor the reader's right to do the work of entering unfamiliar worlds
• Trust that the right readers will find the work

The Gaze You've Been Writing Under

You are writing for your writing group—well-meaning outsiders who need you to translate your life into terms they already understand. Every footnote is a bow to their comfort. Every context paragraph says: "Let me prove my world is worth your attention."

What You've Been Explaining

The kimchi in the refrigerator. The shoes at the door. The way your mother calls you by your Korean name when she is serious. The particular silence of a father who built a life in a language not his own. None of this needs explanation. All of it needs to exist.

Your People

Korean Americans who know that silence. Children of immigrants who translated their parents' dignity into English and lost something in the conversion. Anyone who has stood in a grocery store aisle knowing that nothing here is quite right. They do not need footnotes. They need to see themselves.

The Untranslated Truth

Write the way your halmeoni tells stories—assuming you know the names, assuming you know why that year was hard, assuming the shared understanding that never has to be spoken. Let outsiders do the work your people have always done: entering worlds that were never made for them. Your grandmother did not get a glossary.

Do not write about the kimchi. Write the way it smells when you open your mother's refrigerator at 2am, looking for something you cannot name, finding only the sourness of home.

The Permission

Your writing group will survive their confusion. They have spent their lives entering stories that center them—let them learn what your people have always known: how to find yourself in a story that wasn't made for you. The labor of translation is not yours. Write for the ones who are waiting to recognize themselves. They have been waiting long enough.
