Drive the PgBeam CLI
pgbeam is the terminal surface for the whole control plane: projects, upstream databases, agent credentials, policies, audit, webhooks, branches, and a raw API client. Every command takes --json, so anything you can do interactively you can do in CI.
Install

The install script downloads a self-contained native binary and puts it on your PATH; upgrade it in place with pgbeam update. Do not mix that with a package manager install: if you later install through Homebrew or npm, upgrade with that package manager instead, or its bookkeeping and the binary on disk will disagree.

Authenticate

Login takes an API key, created in the dashboard under Settings > API Keys (https://dash.pgbeam.com/settings/account/api-keys). The key is verified against the API before it is stored, so an invalid key fails the login rather than failing the next command. Your organization is resolved automatically: one visible org is selected, several prompt a pick.
Credentials land in a local profile under ~/.config/pgbeam/. Keep one profile per environment:

In CI, do not log in. Set PGBEAM_API_KEY in the environment, or pass --token per command. PGBEAM_TOKEN and PGBEAM_API_TOKEN are accepted aliases; PGBEAM_API_KEY is the canonical name and the one the Terraform, Crossplane, and Pulumi providers use, so prefer it. Set PGBEAM_NO_UPDATE_CHECK=1 in CI too, so a job never blocks on an update check.
Link a directory to a project
Most commands act on "the linked project", so link once per repo and stop passing ids:

--project prj_xxx overrides the link for a single command, and --org org_xxx overrides the organization. Both are global flags, available everywhere.
Register an upstream database, and get a guarded URL

db add also takes every field as a flag (--host, --port, --name, --username, --password, --ssl-mode, plus --role, --pool-region, --pool-mode, --pool-size, --cache-enabled, --cache-ttl, --query-timeout-ms, --auto-read-routing) for a non-interactive setup.
Then write the guarded connection string into your environment:

The URL points at the project's PgBeam proxy host. Replace the USER, PASS, and YOUR_DB placeholders with your upstream credentials. Existing DATABASE_URL values prompt before being overwritten unless you pass --yes.
Two read-only helpers worth knowing: pgbeam db schema-catalog db_xxx returns the same LLM-shaped catalog the MCP tools serve, and pgbeam db scan-pii db_xxx samples columns against PII heuristics and returns ranked masking suggestions. scan-pii is advisory and applies nothing; you review the suggestions and put the ones you want into a policy profile's masking rules.

Script it
--json changes both halves of the contract, not just the happy path. On success you get the raw API object; on failure you get a JSON error object on stdout and a non-zero exit code:

So a CI step can branch on the exit code and report .error.hint verbatim. A worked example, gating a deploy on migration safety:

Commands that mutate take --yes / -y to skip their confirmation prompt. Use it in CI, and only in CI.
When something is broken, run doctor first

Doctor checks credentials, control-plane reachability, that the organization, project, and databases resolve, that the proxy Postgres port answers, that the hosted MCP endpoint answers, and it summarizes the project's default policy. It prints a PASS, WARN, FAIL, or SKIP per check with a remedy for anything not passing, exits non-zero only on a failure, and never prints secrets. Network problems degrade to warnings with guidance rather than crashing, so it is safe to run offline.
Raw API access
Anything the CLI has not wrapped is still reachable, against the same auth:

Path parameters are interpolated from a known route template, and --data / -d sends a JSON body.
The CLI as an MCP server
pgbeam mcp starts a stdio MCP server that exposes the control-plane API to a coding agent. Rather than one tool per endpoint it exposes three meta-tools, search_endpoints, describe_endpoint, and call_endpoint, so the agent discovers what it needs instead of loading dozens of schemas up front:

This is the management surface (projects, databases, policies), and it is a different thing from the hosted per-project database MCP endpoint that agents query data through. See the pgbeam-connect skill for that one.

Safety rules for the agent
- Never print or echo an API key, a
pba_...MCP token, or a guarded connection string into logs, a commit, or a chat message.--jsonoutput fromagents createcontains secrets: pipe it, do not display it. pgbeam projects update --agents-disabled trueis the project kill-switch and drops every live agent session within seconds.
