Implementing New UniFi Resource Types End-to-End

This unified skill covers the complete flow for adding a new UniFi resource type from manager implementation through API exposure. Both manager/tool layer (apps/{package}/) and API layer (apps/api/) must be implemented together for a complete resource.

Prerequisites

• Understand which package owns the resource (network, protect, access).
• Know whether the resource's GET-by-ID endpoint returns 405 (Step 2A).
• Have a live controller available for validation output in PR description.
• Dependency rule: apps/api/ may only import from unifi-core, never unifi-mcp-shared.
• V2 API identifier hazard: Understand the difference between UniFi V2 ObjectID (_id) and Integration UUID semantics before implementing cross-controller queries.

Part 1: Manager/Tool Layer (apps/{package}/)

Step 1 — Create Manager Class

File: packages/unifi-core/src/unifi_core/<server>/managers/{resource}_manager.py

Reference packages/unifi-core/src/unifi_core/network/managers/dns_manager.py as the golden pattern. Key naming conventions: method names use the full resource name (e.g., list_dns_records, get_dns_record, create_dns_record). The class constructor takes a ConnectionManager directly — not a raw HTTP client. The @lru_cache factory function lives in the app's runtime module and takes no arguments:

Step 2 — Check for 405 Endpoints and V2 Response Shapes

2A: 405 resources (DNS, AP groups, ACL rules, filtering rules) implement get_{resource} via list-and-filter rather than a direct GET-by-ID HTTP call:

Step 2.5 — V2 API Identifier Hazard: ObjectID vs. Integration UUID

Critical: UniFi V2 API returns two identifier types that are NOT interchangeable:

Hazard: If you extract an _id from a V2 response and send it to a different controller as a GET parameter, it will fail silently (404 or empty result) because the ObjectID is local to that controller's database. Always document which identifier type your tool accepts. If you need cross-controller queries, you must use the Integration UUID path, not the ObjectID path.

Example gotcha: Alarm rule IDs from Protect — rule._id is the controller-local ObjectID; if you're implementing a cross-controller alarm view, you need the Integration UUID instead. Check the API docs and test against multi-controller setups.

Step 3 — Define Domain Pydantic Model

Do not conflate same-shaped enums across different fields: review found the WAN IPv6 validator conflated wan_type_v6 (connection type; values like dhcpv6) with ipv6_wan_delegation_type (delegation mode; values like pd/single_network/static) because both are string enums with overlapping vocabularies. When two fields use similarly-shaped enums, validate each against its OWN allowed-value set — never share a validator or constant list between fields just because the value shapes look alike.

Step 4 — Create Tool Module

File: apps/{package}/tools/{resource}.py

Use explicit named parameters (never args: dict). Derive mutable-only schema for updates:

Step 5-7 — Tests and Manifest Generation

1. Write test_{resource}_manager.py and test_{resource}_tools.py with live output in PR.
2. Run make generate to update manifest. Commit the output.

Step 8 — Register Action Dispatcher (API-Layer)

Update translators (tools that pass a nested rule_data: dict) follow the _translate_acl_update pattern. The critical requirement is to reject unknown fields rather than silently filter, then run validate_update_fields() on the full nested dict:

Reference: _translate_acl_update in apps/api/src/unifi_api/services/dispatch_overrides.py for the full canonical implementation (includes CLEAR_NETMASK_FIELDS handling and no-op guard).

Only tools whose arg shapes need reshaping or validation need a translator. Simple CRUD tools that don't use a nested rule_data dict do not.

Part 2: API Layer (apps/api/)

Procedure A: Multi-Surface Phase 8 Requirement

All surfaces must be complete:

1. Strawberry GraphQL type
2. GraphQL Query field
3. REST resource route (GET /v1/sites/{site_id}/{resource})
4. Action dispatcher (POST /v1/actions/unifi_tool_name)
5. Register serializer projection in apps/api/src/unifi_api/serializers/<server>/ — every new tool needs a @register_serializer entry (with the tool name and appropriate kind) or CI raises SerializerRegistryError. Reference existing files in that directory for the pattern.
6. Regenerate reference docs: uv run --package unifi-api-server python -m unifi_api.graphql.docgen
7. Run python3 scripts/generate_skill_references.py (add --check in CI) to regenerate skill references artifact; commit the output.
8. Commit updated apps/api/openapi.json
9. Commit updated apps/api/docs/graphql-reference.md

Incomplete PRs are merge-blocked by CI.

Procedure B: Strawberry Types

Register by importing the type into the appropriate apps/api/src/unifi_api/graphql/types/<server>/ module and wiring it into the Query field. Verify by running docgen (step 5 above) and confirming the type appears in apps/api/docs/graphql-reference.md.

Procedure B.5 — Protect List Tools: Two Valid Patterns

Protect list tools have two valid patterns depending on whether the manager returns a homogeneous list or a variable-shape envelope:

Pattern 1 — kind=list with _coerce_list_result normalization (recognition tools): Used for protect_list_known_faces and protect_list_known_license_plates. The API routes layer (apps/api/src/unifi_api/routes/actions.py) automatically calls _coerce_list_result() for any tool with kind="list" — unwraps a single-key dict envelope into a bare list. Do not manually unwrap in the type or tool layer.

Pattern 2 — kind=DETAIL wrapper (variable-shape resources like alarm rules): Used for resources that return either a bare list or a {items, count} dict depending on firmware version. The type's from_manager_output classmethod accepts both shapes and normalizes. Document the firmware versions tested.

Choosing the pattern: Use Pattern 1 when the manager returns a consistent single-key envelope. Use Pattern 2 when firmware may return bare list or dict depending on version.

Procedure C: Mutation Registration

Mutations are wired via DISPATCH_ARG_TRANSLATORS in the action dispatcher (Step 8 in Part 1). There is no separate MutationHandler base class or mutation_registry module in the codebase — do not create one. All write-path tools flow through the existing actions route in apps/api/src/unifi_api/services/dispatch_overrides.py.

Procedure D: Cursor-Based Pagination

Use module-level paginate() function, not offset-based:

Procedure E: Render Hints

Every type has kind (LIST/DETAIL/DIFF/TIMESERIES/EVENT_LOG/EMPTY/STREAM). Optional: primary_key, display_columns, sort_default.

Procedure F: Resource vs. Action Error Contracts

Resource endpoints (GET /v1/sites/{id}/{resource}): Use HTTP status codes. 409 Conflict for capability mismatch.

Action endpoints (POST /v1/actions/{tool}): Always 200; errors in envelope.

Procedure G: ManagerFactory for Multi-Controller

Access via request.app.state.manager_factory:

Uses asyncio.Lock per controller to prevent concurrent cache-miss races. Call await factory.invalidate_controller(controller_id) on delete/credential update.

Procedure H: Mutation Preview and deepcopy

Use copy.deepcopy() to preserve sibling fields during merge:

Part 3: Field-Symmetry Migration

The field-symmetry rule requires every field name exposed by list_* output to be accepted under the same name by the matching create_*/update_* tool. Use this procedure when migrating an existing domain — even if the user doesn't say "field symmetry." Rollout is complete across all three servers (Network, Protect, Access) as of Phase 4.

Step FS-1 — Audit the Field Gap

Compare the list tool's output schema against every field accepted by create/update:

For each field the list response returns, verify the create/update tool accepts it under the same name. Common gaps:

• List returns flat booleans (qos_enabled); create expects nested dicts (qos: {...}) → silent drop.
• List returns schedule_mode; update accepts no schedule parameter → silent drop.

Step FS-2 — Model Structure Invariants

Blast-radius rule (hard blocker on review): Non-None defaults in <Domain>Base or Update<Domain> silently overwrite controller state on every update that doesn't specify the field.

Step FS-3 — Field Validation Helper

Export from the model file (implement per-domain; no shared validator module):

Managers filter to mutable fields inline: {k: v for k, v in data.items() if k in MUTABLE_FIELDS}.

Step FS-4 — Cross-Layer Symmetry Test

Register the (server, domain) pair in apps/api/tests/unit/test_cross_layer_symmetry.py (REGISTERED_PAIRS). This gate checks that the Strawberry type at unifi_api.graphql.types.<server>.<domain> exposes every MUTABLE_FIELDS name with a compatible annotation, catching MCP↔API drift at PR time.

Field-Symmetry Gotchas

Flat → nested translation: List exposes qos_enabled: bool; UniFi API expects {"qos": {"enabled": true}}. Translation lives in the manager, not the model — model stays flat, manager maps to nested shape before the PUT.

Non-mutable test exceptions are permanent: Fields like id, created_at, computed summaries must be documented as exceptions in symmetry tests. Do NOT enforce symmetry for genuinely non-mutable fields.

Reference files: packages/unifi-core/src/unifi_core/network/models/acl.py (ACL model reference, MUTABLE_FIELDS + validation), packages/unifi-core/src/unifi_core/network/managers/acl_manager.py (ACL manager, fetch-merge-put without manager-level validator), AGENTS.md (governance rule).

Part 4: Update Tool — Fetch-Merge-Put Deep-Dive

All update_* tools use the fetch-merge-put pattern. Skipping the fetch step causes silent data loss — the PUT wipes every field not in the payload. Read packages/unifi-core/src/unifi_core/network/managers/dns_manager.py as a reference.

Update Tool Requirements

additionalProperties: false on every update tool's inputSchema — closes the ArgModelBase silent-drop vulnerability (FastMCP drops extra keys before validation). Set inline on the Tool definition (see Step 4 example above).

update_data: dict param — LLM UX requirement. Include "pass only fields you want to change; omitted fields are preserved" in the docstring.

Delta preview, not full merged result:

The double-fetch is intentional — ensures preview reflects live controller state, not stale cache.

Create vs. Update Asymmetry

Update tools use update_data: dict. Create tools use flat keyword params. Do not mirror the create tool signature when building the update tool — they solve different problems (full spec vs. delta).

Regression Test Standard

Every update tool must verify non-passed fields are preserved after the update:

Write-Verification Standard

Network/WLAN create and update tools re-read controller state after the write and classify every requested field via unifi_core.write_verification.WriteVerificationResult (packages/unifi-core/src/unifi_core/write_verification.py) into persisted_fields, dropped_fields, coerced_fields, and unverifiable_fields. The response envelope reports mutation_applied (bool) separately from success — a request can partially apply (partial_success = not success and persisted_fields).

Tolerate controller-side normalization — don't flag it as a silent drop. Live mutation testing found the controller's own ap_group_mode normalization (groups -> all) on WLAN writes initially flagged as coerced/dropped even though the write fully succeeded as intended. ap_group_mode is unverifiable via read-back and must be excluded from strict drop/coerce classification rather than treated as a failure signal — classify genuinely unverifiable fields as unverifiable_fields, not dropped_fields.

Naming Conventions

Network/Access: {package}_{resource}_{verb} (e.g., network_dns_record_create) Protect: protect_{noun}_{verb} (e.g., protect_alarm_arm) Capability-oriented, not transport-oriented: Name and design tools around the capability (e.g., protect_list_sensors, protect_update_chime), not the backend API that serves it. Prefer extending an existing capability tool over adding a parallel protect_*_public_* tool tied to a specific backend (e.g., the Public API vs. legacy). Transport-specific naming leaks implementation detail into the tool surface and fragments capability coverage across near-duplicate tools. Manager class: {Resource}Manager. Factory: get_{resource}_manager with @lru_cache. Manager methods: list_{resource}s(), get_{resource}(id), create_{resource}(data), update_{resource}(id, updates).

Cross-Cutting Gotchas

Never use args: dict — silently drops named kwargs. Use explicit parameters.

405 ≠ auth issue — switch to list() + filter immediately.

V2 list wrapping — check isinstance(response, list) BEFORE dict; list branch first.

Manifest must be committed — make generate output is not auto-generated in CI.

Make targets: make generate, make check-generated, make ci (not make manifest).

Dependency rule: Never import unifi-mcp-shared from apps/api/ (circular imports).

Multi-surface mandatory Phase 8+ — incomplete PRs merge-blocked by CI.

Release tag policy: No api/* tags before Phase 7.

Silent creation failures: Controller may return 200 without creating; check required fields.

Zone endpoint: Use /firewall/zone-matrix not /firewall/zones (404).

forget-client needs array: "macs": [mac] not "mac": mac.

Firewall policy required: schedule: {"mode": "ALWAYS"} and create_allow_respond: False on BLOCK/REJECT.

Firmware variation: Different versions return different field shapes; request firmware version with bug reports.

VLAN cross-field validation (1–4094): update_network/create validate vlan is between 1 and 4094 before dispatching to the manager; out-of-range values are rejected with an error containing "between 1 and 4094" and the manager call is never made. Ref: apps/network/tests/unit/test_network_tools.py::test_vlan_range_validation.

SSID length cap (32 bytes): WLAN name (SSID) is capped at 32 bytes per 802.11; packages/unifi-core/src/unifi_core/network/models/wlans.py raises ValueError("WLAN 'name' (SSID) must be at most 32 bytes") before the request reaches the controller. Multi-byte (non-ASCII) SSIDs count by byte length, not character count.

Action dispatcher arg-mismatch: Without DISPATCH_ARG_TRANSLATORS, action tools fail silently. Test both MCP and /v1/actions/ paths.

Dispatcher first-call heuristic — preview-prefetch tools need DISPATCH_OVERRIDES: The action dispatcher selects the arg translator based on the first call that arrives for a tool name. If a preview/confirm tool issues a prefetch (e.g., a GET to build a diff preview) before the primary mutation call, the dispatcher may cache the wrong translator from the empty/diff-shape first call. Rule: any tool that prefetches data before its primary mutation MUST have an explicit entry in DISPATCH_OVERRIDES in apps/api/src/unifi_api/services/dispatch_overrides.py. Without it, the mutation call silently routes to the wrong translator and fails.

Mutating tools require confirm=true before dispatch resolution: apps/api/src/unifi_api/services/actions.py:dispatch_action classifies each tool via _classify_action(), which requires BOTH entry.permission_action in {create, update, delete} AND entry.read_only_hint is False to agree before treating it as a "mutation" (raises ValueError on disagreement — fail-closed). If action_kind == "mutation" and confirm is not true, dispatch raises ValueError(f"tool '{tool_name}' requires confirm=true"). There is no CONFIRM_REQUIRED_TOOLS allowlist — it was removed in favor of this two-signal (permission_action + readOnlyHint) classification. This manifest-driven gate is independent of any confirm logic the tool layer itself implements.

V2 ObjectID vs. Integration UUID: ObjectIDs are controller-local; if implementing cross-controller queries, use Integration UUID path instead. Test against multi-controller setups.

ConnectionManager auto-appends the configured site — pass site-relative paths, not site-prefixed paths: ConnectionManager injects the configured site segment into the request path automatically. Tools/managers must build ApiRequest paths relative to the site, not include a full site-prefixed path themselves — doing so double-prefixes the site segment and breaks the request. Found reviewing a community cross-site device-lookup tool contribution that built a fully site-prefixed path manually.

Pass-through test pattern: For tools that pass raw manager output to API without transformation, validate shape compatibility with Strawberry type expectations via snapshot or schema-compliance tests.

_coerce_list_result for kind=list action tools: apps/api/src/unifi_api/routes/actions.py automatically calls _coerce_list_result() for any action tool whose type has kind="list". It unwraps single-key dict envelopes to a bare list; bare lists pass through. If your manager returns a multi-key dict, _coerce_list_result will raise — ensure output is a bare list or single-key envelope.

api-actions phase uses a curated 6-tool sample: API_ACTIONS_SAMPLE in scripts/live_smoke.py is hardcoded to 6 tools. New tools are NOT automatically included. Explicitly append to API_ACTIONS_SAMPLE to add api-actions smoke coverage.

New capability tools need scripts/live_smoke.py coverage, not ad hoc validation: When a new resource/capability tool is added, fold it into scripts/live_smoke.py as confirm=False preview coverage using the existing device-inventory cache, rather than writing one-off manual validation scripts.

Tool description vs. Pydantic Field description: Keep distinct — do not copy-paste tool description into field descriptions.

api_request_raw required for empty-body Protect DELETE and merge ops: client.api_request() raises when the controller returns an empty response body. Use client.api_request_raw() instead. Reference: packages/unifi-core/src/unifi_core/protect/managers/alarm_manager.py

AlarmRulesFacade — version-transparent facade for dual-backend resources: When a resource spans two API backends, implement a facade that prefers v2 and falls back to legacy on AlarmManagerPermissionError or BadRequest. Surface the complete flag in _meta. 5xx/transient errors must NOT be masked. The AlarmRulesFacade class is the reference implementation in packages/unifi-core/src/unifi_core/protect/managers/.

AlarmRulesFacade._id_family routing — UUID format wins, legacy IDs may have suffixes: _id_family routes a rule ID to v2 (if it matches full UUID format) or legacy (everything else). Do NOT use a strict 24-hex ObjectID regex for this check — legacy automation IDs may carry suffixes like _new which would fail a strict hex test. The module uses _UUID_RE (UUID format match) as the sole branch condition: return "v2" if _UUID_RE.match(rule_id) else "legacy". Any refactor that replaces _UUID_RE with a 24-hex regex will silently misroute suffixed legacy IDs.

Preview/apply backend-selection symmetry (AlarmRulesFacade): The preview path of any mutation tool on a dual-backend facade MUST use _id_family for backend selection — the same logic the apply path uses. If preview fetches the rule via the wrong backend, it may succeed (returning stale data) while apply routes differently and fails or mutates the wrong record. Test both preview and apply against a rule ID from each backend.

SuperAdmin prerequisite for OS-level Protect v2 endpoints: Some endpoints require SuperAdmin on the Protect console. Regular site admins receive AlarmManagerPermissionError; AlarmRulesFacade falls back silently. Always document this requirement in tool descriptions.

Separate Network/Protect user databases: SuperAdmin on the Network controller does NOT automatically mean SuperAdmin on the Protect console. Be explicit about which system the credential requirement applies to.

Facade migration — audit ALL call sites: When migrating a service handler to a facade, audit EVERY call site: action dispatcher (apps/api/src/unifi_api/services/dispatch_overrides.py), GraphQL query/mutation fields, and any routing table entries. Missing one leaves old code silently routing to the pre-migration target. (Ref: alarm facade migration where dispatcher kept routing to legacy alarm_manager after the facade was introduced.)

Cross-package combined pytest run hits conftest collision: Running uv run pytest packages/ apps/ causes pytest to load conflicting conftest files from different packages and fail. Run per-package instead: uv run pytest packages/unifi-core or uv run pytest apps/network.

uv sync --all-packages required before isolated worktree api tests: When running api-layer tests in an isolated worktree (outside the full monorepo workspace), cross-package deps are not resolved. Run uv sync --all-packages first or tests will import the wrong version of unifi-core and fail with import errors or stale-model assertions.

Partial-update normalizers must not reuse the create-time normalizer unmodified: review flagged packages/unifi-core/src/unifi_core/network/managers/oon_manager.py reusing the create-time secure-config normalizer for partial updates, which silently injected an unrelated field while the caller only intended to toggle one setting, overwriting unrelated policy. Partial-update paths need their own normalizer that touches only explicitly-provided fields; do not assume the create normalizer is safe to reuse for update payloads.

Update translators must reject unknown fields — never filter silently: When a dispatch translator handles a tool that uses a nested rule_data: dict, check set(rule_data) - MUTABLE_FIELDS and raise ValueError on unknown fields. Then run validate_update_fields(rule_data) on the full dict before returning. Silent filtering (e.g., {k: v for k, v in rule_data.items() if k in MUTABLE_FIELDS}) masks caller errors and hides field-name mismatches. Reference: _translate_acl_update in apps/api/src/unifi_api/services/dispatch_overrides.py.

_meta alarm coverage signal: When AlarmRulesFacade returns complete=False, emit result["_meta"] = {_ALARM_COVERAGE_META: {"complete": False, "reason": notice}}. The constant _ALARM_COVERAGE_META = "com.github.sirkirby.unifi-mcp/alarm-coverage" is defined in apps/protect/src/unifi_protect_mcp/tools/alarm.py. Omit _meta entirely on v2 success responses.

if rules: handles both permission errors and 200 empty lists: The AlarmRulesFacade fallback condition evaluates False for both None (permission error/403) and [] (unmigrated console returns 200 OK with empty list). Both must trigger legacy fallback — a 200-empty-list from the primary backend is NOT a successful response.

Alarm rule write-schema vocabulary — legacy ≠ v2: Do not reuse rule_to_controller for v2 mutations; it emits legacy vocabulary only. Legacy: name/enable/conditions/sources; v2: title/enabled/triggers/scope-nested sources. Implement alarm_rule_to_legacy_body in packages/unifi-core/src/unifi_core/protect/models/alarm_rules.py. Echo data verbatim in the inverse — do not reconstruct nested legacy structures.

require_non_empty_actions guard prevents Protect UI corruption: Creating/updating an alarm rule with actions: [] makes the Protect UI non-functional; only API deletion recovers it. Guard defined in packages/unifi-core/src/unifi_core/protect/models/_validators.py; applied in the alarm facade before routing. Apply on Create always; on Update only when actions is in the change set.

isinstance(value, int) matches bool — exclude it explicitly in numeric validators: Because bool is a subclass of int in Python, a validator/normalizer that checks isinstance(value, int) without also excluding bool will silently accept True/False as valid integer values. Review flagged this gap in the status/epoch normalizers in packages/unifi-core/src/unifi_core/access/models/visitors.py (_status_name, _epoch_to_iso), which coerce with int(value)/isinstance(value, int) without a bool guard. The correct pattern already used elsewhere is isinstance(value, int) and not isinstance(value, bool) (see packages/unifi-core/src/unifi_core/network/managers/dpi_manager.py) — apply it to any new numeric-field validator.

New REST resource routes must explicitly declare the scope dependency — it is not inherited: Every router in apps/api/src/unifi_api/routes/resources/<server>/*.py wires auth itself via dependencies=[Depends(require_scope(Scope.READ))] (import require_scope from unifi_api.auth.middleware); there is no base-router default. Omitting this line on a new resource route leaves the endpoint reachable without scope enforcement — copy the dependency line from a sibling file (e.g., apps/api/src/unifi_api/routes/resources/network/devices.py) when scaffolding a new resource route, don't assume it's inherited.

Assert on the captured payload, not just that the mock was called: A test that only does mock_put.assert_called_once() (or similar call-count-only assertions) will pass even when the payload is wrong — e.g., a field silently dropped or mistranslated. Follow the Regression Test Standard above: capture call_args and assert on individual payload keys/values, not call presence alone. A fixture/mock returning a plausible-looking default can mask a real serialization or fetch-merge-put bug.

DETAIL resolvers must fetch full detail data, not reuse the LIST-shape summary item: Per Procedure B.5, a kind=DETAIL resolver that falls back to returning the cached LIST-summary object (instead of calling from_manager_output against the full detail payload) will silently return truncated fields to GraphQL clients. Verify each DETAIL resolver actually fetches/normalizes detail-shaped data rather than passing through the list item it was resolved from.

Typed domain models silently drop undeclared manager fields — audit field coverage, not just types: A typed Pydantic model layered over a manager's raw dict only exposes the fields it declares; any manager field not listed is silently dropped from the response, even though the raw data was fetched. Regression found in the Protect Sensor model, which reduced a manager-shaped sensor record down to id/name/type/motion_detected_at only — dropping battery, connection, state, last_seen, and readings that the manager actually returns. This is the same class of bug as Step 3's model-field coverage concern; when adding or reviewing a typed domain model, diff the model's declared fields against every key the manager's raw response actually contains, not just against the fields the PR's use case needs.
