Fundraising Narrative

Investors back conviction before they back numbers, and conviction comes from a story with a spine. The costly mistake this skill prevents is building the deck first: founders who start in slides end up with twenty loosely related pages and no answer to the three questions every partner meeting silently asks - why now, why you, why this. Build the narrative memo first; the deck is rendered from it, never the reverse.

Operating procedure

Order matters: raw material before drafting, drafting before tightening, tightening before any slide exists.

1. Gather the inputs below. Do not draft on assumptions about traction or stage.
2. Interview the founder for raw material. The single best question is "What did you believe a year ago that you no longer believe?" - the answer is usually the Insight. For Origin, ask "Why did this problem choose you?" and push past the resume answer to the earned secret.
3. Draft the arc as six spoken sentences first - one per beat, plus one for the ask. Read it aloud. If it does not survive being spoken, it will not survive a partner meeting.
4. Test the draft against the three questions. Why now must live in Insight, why you in Origin, why this in Wedge + Traction. A beat that answers none of the three gets rewritten.
5. Apply the tightening rules below to every sentence.
6. Calibrate the weighting to stage.
7. Write the one-page narrative memo (template below). Only then map each beat to exactly one slide - resist adding supporting slides until the spine holds. Hand the memo to pitch-deck-builder.

Step 1: gather inputs

• Stage of the raise (default seed if unstated - but confirm with fundraising-stage-selector if the founder is unsure).
• The single strongest metric, with its denominator and time window. If the founder offers three, force a choice of one.
• The founding story in the founder's own words, unedited.
• The competitive landscape as the founder sees it, including who they are afraid of.
• The milestone this raise funds and the 18-month execution plan.
• Label anything the founder estimates rather than measures as a guess, and keep that label through the memo.

The five-beat arc

1. Origin - why you, why now. The personal or earned-secret reason this problem chose the founder. Maximum two sentences; specificity beats drama.
2. Insight - the non-obvious truth about the market most people get wrong. State it as a contrarian claim a smart investor would push back on. If nobody would push back, it is not an insight.
3. Wedge - the narrow, winnable beachhead. Show domination of something small before claiming something large.
4. Traction - proof the insight is real. Lead with the single metric that most reduces investor doubt: retention, payback, or week-over-week growth, in that order of preference.
5. Vision - the category created if the wedge works. Paint the ten-year picture, then connect it back to the next 18 months of execution.

Tightening rules

• Cut every adjective an investor could not independently verify.
• Replace "huge market" with a bottom-up number and the assumption behind it.
• Name the risk the investor is already thinking about, then answer it. Naming it first signals self-awareness and defuses the objection.
• Every claim of traction needs a denominator. "40% growth" means nothing without the base.
• The strongest fact belongs in the first 90 seconds of any telling of the story.

Stage calibration

• Seed: weight Origin and Insight. The sale is the founder and the bet. Traction can be qualitative - design partners, waitlist conversion.
• Series A: weight Traction and Vision. The bet is partially proven; the question is whether it scales. Show the engine, not just the spark.

Bad insight line: "The market for developer tools is exploding and we're perfectly positioned." Good insight line: "Everyone assumes developers won't pay for testing tools - but the 40 teams we interviewed already pay in engineer-hours, roughly $30k per team per year, they just don't see it as a line item yet."

Deliverable

Produce a one-page narrative memo containing the five beats, the single hero metric with denominator, the named risk-and-answer, and three sentences of vision - plus the six spoken sentences at the bottom. The deck is built from this memo by pitch-deck-builder, never the reverse.

Do NOT

• Do not open with vision before proof. A grand TAM with no wedge signals the founder does not know where to start.
• Do not allow a "we have no competitors" claim - it reads as naivety. Map the landscape and explain why incumbents structurally cannot follow.
• Do not bury the lede. If the strongest fact appears after minute two, restructure.
• Do not let the memo carry three hero metrics. Multiple heroes means no hero; the reader picks the weakest.
• Do not draft slides in parallel with the memo. Slides seduce founders into decoration before the spine holds.

Quality bar

Before the memo ships, verify: the six sentences survive being read aloud; each beat answers exactly one of why now / why you / why this; every number has a denominator and a window; the insight would provoke pushback from a smart investor; the named risk is the one the investor would actually raise, not a strawman; and each beat maps to exactly one future slide.
