Networking System
Use this skill to turn networking from awkward, sporadic effort into a calm, repeatable system built on genuine relationships.
1. Define goals
Clarify why you are networking: job search, learning, partnerships, mentorship, or visibility. Goals shape who you reach out to and what you ask for.
2. Map your network in tiers
- Tier 1: close contacts you can reach anytime.
- Tier 2: warm acquaintances worth nurturing.
- Tier 3: aspirational contacts you want to meet. Keep a simple CRM (spreadsheet or contacts app) with name, context, last touch, and next action.
3. Lead with generosity
Give before you ask. Share a useful article, make an introduction, offer feedback, or congratulate a milestone. Relationships compound when you are a net giver.
4. Outreach templates
Cold but warm intro: "Hi [Name], I admired your work on [specific thing]. I'm exploring [topic] and would value 15 minutes of your perspective. No worries if the timing isn't right."
Reconnect: "Hi [Name], it's been a while since [shared context]. I came across [thing relevant to them] and thought of you. How have you been?"
Keep messages short, specific, and easy to say yes to.
5. Run good conversations
- Prepare 2-3 thoughtful questions.
- Listen more than you talk; ask about their challenges.
- Close with a clear, small next step and a thank-you.
6. Follow-up cadence
- Within 24 hours: send a thank-you noting one specific takeaway.
- Tier 1: meaningful touch every 1-2 months.
- Tier 2: every quarter.
- Tier 3: when you have genuine value to offer. Batch a weekly 30-minute "relationship hour" to send touches.
7. Track and remember
Log personal details (kids' names, interests, goals) so future messages feel personal, not transactional. Set reminders for birthdays and follow-ups.
8. Maintain, don't only mine
Stay in touch when you need nothing. The strongest networks are built before you need them.
Output for the user
Deliver: a tiered contact tracker template, outreach and reconnect scripts, a follow-up cadence calendar, and a weekly relationship-hour routine.
