Long-form YouTube is won on average view duration, and view duration is engineered in the script, not the edit. The two moments that decide a video are the first 30 seconds - the retention cliff, where the largest share of viewers leave - and the mid-video sag, where an unstructured body bleeds watchers one beat at a time. This skill produces scripts built on a three-part architecture: a hook that earns the first 30 seconds, a beat-structured body that delivers on the promise, and a payoff that rewards past what was promised.

Operating procedure

Step 1: gather inputs

1. The video's single payoff: what the viewer knows or can do at the end, in one sentence. No payoff, no script.
2. Format: education/tutorial, story/documentary, or opinion/commentary - this selects the hook formula.
3. Target length. Default 8-12 minutes for education; the pattern-interrupt count derives from this.
4. The thumbnail/title promise, if already concepted - the hook must pay it off in the first 30 seconds or the click feels baited.
5. The creator's speaking pace if known; default 150 words per minute for timing the beat sheet.

Step 2: write the hook (first 30 seconds)

Open with a pattern interrupt - the first line creates a knowledge gap or surfaces a pain the viewer already feels. Pick one formula by format:

• Shocking Stat - "Most people waste X doing Y." (education)
• Bold Claim - "You have been doing X wrong for years." (education, commentary)
• Story Drop - open mid-scene at the highest-stakes moment. (story)
• Before/After - show the messy before, promise the clean after. (tutorial - use instead of Story Drop)
• Contrarian Lead - state the unpopular take, spend the body justifying it. (opinion/commentary)

Then tease the payoff explicitly: tell the viewer exactly what they will know or be able to do by the end. Never open with "Hey guys, welcome back" - greetings spend the cliff seconds on nothing. Get the main point's setup on screen before the two-minute mark, always.

Step 3: structure the body as 3-5 beats

Each beat is a self-contained unit with three parts: a mini-hook at its start (a micro-promise for this beat), the delivery of its point, and a bridge that opens a loop into the next beat. At the video's midpoint, place a deliberate re-engagement trigger - "but here's the thing" or an explicit stakes-raise - because the midpoint is the second-largest drop-off after the cliff. Write for the ear: short sentences, contractions, no clause stacking. Mark every visual in brackets: [B-ROLL: …], [GRAPHIC: …], [CUT TO: …].

Step 4: place pattern interrupts every 90-120 seconds

A pattern interrupt resets attention: a new camera angle, a bold on-screen graphic, a rhetorical question, a brief story. At 150 wpm that is one interrupt roughly every 225-300 words. Flag each in the script as [PATTERN INTERRUPT: what changes] so the editor executes it deliberately rather than by accident.

Step 5: write the payoff

The ending must deliver more than the hook promised. Summarize the key takeaways in one sentence each, then add one bonus insight not mentioned in the hook - this surplus is what converts a satisfied viewer into a subscriber and lifts end-screen retention. Close with a single, specific CTA tied to the video's topic ("grab the pricing script linked below"), never a generic subscribe ask. Do not end abruptly; the outro is part of the retention signal the algorithm reads.

Step 6: run the read-aloud pass

Read every line aloud and cut anything that trips the tongue. Verify each beat's word count against its time budget at 150 wpm. Confirm section labels and rough timestamps are in place for the editor.

Good/bad opening contrast

• Bad: "Hey guys, welcome back to the channel. Before we start, make sure you're subscribed. So today we're going to be talking about freelance pricing, which is a topic a lot of you have asked about…" (45 words, zero signal, the cliff has already taken the audience.)
• Good: "Freelancers who bill hourly earn less every year they get better - because getting faster cuts their own invoice. [GRAPHIC: hourly vs project income curves] By the end of this video you'll have the exact three-step script I used to move 40% higher without losing a client." (Bold Claim, gap opened, payoff teased, visual at second five.)

Deliverable

Produce a full production-ready script containing: the hook with formula named, 3-5 beats each with mini-hook, delivery, and bridge, [PATTERN INTERRUPT] and [B-ROLL/GRAPHIC] cues inline, rough timestamps per section, and the payoff with bonus insight and one specific CTA - plus the filled beat sheet as the editing outline.

Do NOT

• Do not bury the main point past the two-minute mark; viewers who came for the promise will not wait for it.
• Do not pad with filler transitions ("without further ado", "let's just jump right in") - every filler second is measured against you.
• Do not write for the eye; a sentence that reads well but trips aloud is a broken sentence.
• Do not stack CTAs; one specific ask outperforms subscribe-like-comment-bell strings.
• Do not let the hook promise what the payoff cannot cash - inflated hooks buy one view and cost the channel's trust.
• Do not end abruptly at the last point; a collapsed outro drags average view duration on the whole video.
