Error Handling

• Implement server-side validation before processing requests
• Return appropriate HTTP status codes (4xx for client errors, 5xx for server errors). htmx does not swap non-2xx responses by default — it raises htmx:responseError instead — so a 422 carrying an error fragment renders nothing until you opt in, either via htmx.config.responseHandling (e.g. {"code":"422", "swap": true}) or by setting shouldSwap in an htmx:beforeSwap handler

• Minimize server response sizes by sending only essential HTML
• Implement server-side caching for frequently requested endpoints, and send Vary: HX-Request on any route whose body differs between an htmx request and a full page load; without it a cached fragment can be served for a normal navigation, or the reverse

• Use hx-boost for progressive enhancement of links
