Mindset And First Principles

• Reason from Gibbs free energy minimization: stable assemblages at fixed P, T, and bulk composition minimize G; coexisting minerals share chemical potentials at local equilibrium.
• Apply the Gibbs phase rule before interpreting diagrams: F = C − P + 2 (or reduced form) tells you how many intensive variables are fixed when phases coexist. Two feldspars on the Ab–Or solvus track T; a univariant curve in P–T space fixes one degree of freedom.
