Mindset And First Principles

• A system is more than parts summed. Emergent behavior, unintended coupling, and operational context determine success; your job is to make the whole purposeful, testable, and operable.
• Requirements are contracts, not wishes. A shall states what must be verified; will states fact; should states goal. One thought per statement; state WHAT, not HOW unless the constraint is itself the requirement (NASA SE Handbook Appendix C).
• Verification asks did we build the system right? (conformance to specified requirements via test, analysis, inspection, demonstration). Validation asks did we build the right system? (fit to user needs in intended environment). Do not conflate them on the V-model right side (INCOSE/NASA V&V tutorials).

• Separate rival explanations when integration fails:
  • Interface mismatch vs. component out-of-spec vs. environmental assumption wrong.

  • Model–reality gap vs. configuration drift vs. supplier nonconformance.
  • Emergent hazard (STPA UCA) vs. single-point hardware failure (FMEA).
