Overview

A campaign brief is the single source of truth for a marketing campaign — it aligns stakeholders, focuses execution, and defines what success looks like before a dollar is spent or a word is written. Without it, campaigns sprawl, messaging gets diluted, and ROI is impossible to prove.

This skill runs a structured intake, then produces a complete campaign brief using the SCOPE Framework: Strategy → Channel Mix → Objectives → People (audience) → Execution.

Core principle: Brief before build. Never start creative, copy, or media buying without a locked brief.

A strong brief answers five questions anyone on the team should be able to answer without asking:

1. Who are we talking to and why do they care?
2. What is the single most important thing we want them to do?
3. Why should they believe us?
4. Where and when will they encounter this campaign?
5. How will we know if it worked?

If anyone on the campaign team cannot answer all five, the brief is not done.

Before You Start — Intake

Ask these questions one at a time before generating anything. Do not skip any. Wait for the answer to each before moving to the next. The intake is not optional — it prevents the most common campaign brief failure mode: writing a brief for an imaginary campaign instead of the actual one.

1. What is the primary goal of this campaign?

2. What product, service, or offer is this campaign for? Give the name, a 1-2 sentence description of what it does, the primary value proposition, and the price point or deal size if relevant. If it is a free offer (trial, content, event), describe the conversion goal after the free step.

3. Who is the primary target audience? Specify: job title(s), seniority level, company size, industry vertical(s), geography, and any behavioral or technographic qualifiers you have. If you have a named ICP definition, share it. If you are targeting multiple audiences with different messaging, flag that now.

4. What is the campaign timeline? Provide: planned start date, planned end date, any hard deadlines (event dates, fiscal quarter-end, product release date), and how much lead time is available for asset production.

5. Which channels are in scope? Select all that apply: email (cold or nurture), paid search, paid social (LinkedIn, Meta, YouTube, other), SEO/content, LinkedIn organic, webinar or virtual event, in-person event, partner/co-marketing, sales outbound, direct mail, podcast/sponsorship, other.

6. What is the approximate budget or resource constraint? Even a rough range helps size the channel mix: lean (under $10K), moderate ($10K–$50K), growth ($50K–$200K), or fully funded ($200K+). Also note whether you have in-house creative/copy capacity or need to account for production costs.

7. What does success look like? Name the primary KPI and give a target number if you have one. Then name 1-2 secondary metrics. Examples: 200 MQLs, $500K pipeline influenced, 500 event registrations, 5% trial-to-paid conversion, 30% email open rate.

8. Are there existing assets, messaging, or campaigns to build on? Note: previous campaign results, current positioning docs, existing content library, brand guidelines, past creative that performed well or poorly. If this is net-new, say so.

Frameworks

The SCOPE Framework

Each section of the brief maps to one letter. Build them in order — each section informs the next.

Start with P (People) in your thinking even though S (Strategy) leads the document. You cannot write a strategy until you know who you are writing it for.

The 3 Messaging Pillars Model

Every campaign needs exactly 3 messaging pillars — the core arguments that justify the audience taking the desired action. More than 3 dilutes focus and makes creative direction impossible. Fewer than 3 leaves objections unanswered.

Each pillar contains three elements:

Headline Claim The core argument stated as a direct, specific benefit or insight. Aim for 8-12 words. Avoid adjectives like "powerful," "seamless," or "innovative" — these are not claims, they are opinions. A good headline claim could be proven true or false.

Good: "Teams using [Product] close deals 23% faster than industry average" Weak: "The most powerful platform for modern revenue teams"

Proof Point The evidence that makes the headline claim credible. Must be one of: a specific stat with a source, a direct customer quote with attribution, a product demo or screenshot, or a third-party validation (analyst quote, award, case study outcome). Do not leave proof points as "[Insert stat here]" — find the actual evidence before briefing creative.

Channel Expression How this pillar manifests differently across channels. A pillar is not a piece of copy — it is a strategic argument that gets expressed in different formats. Map each pillar to at least three channel expressions:

• Paid ad: headline + visual concept
• Email: subject line angle + body hook
• Content/SEO: article angle or landing page headline
• Sales: talk track framing for SDR/AE use

Campaign Funnel Mapping

Map every asset, channel, and tactic to a specific funnel stage. If you cannot assign a funnel stage to an asset, it should not be in the campaign.

TOFU — Top of Funnel (Awareness) Goal: get the right people to notice you exist and associate you with a relevant problem.

• Audience state of mind: not actively searching for a solution, may not recognize the problem
• Success metrics: impressions, reach, video views, organic traffic, brand search lift
• Channel examples: YouTube pre-roll, LinkedIn awareness ads, podcast sponsorships, SEO blog content, social organic, PR/earned media, out-of-home (for regional campaigns)
• Content formats: thought leadership articles, ungated research reports, short-form video, social carousels

MOFU — Middle of Funnel (Consideration) Goal: earn consideration from people who now recognize the problem and are evaluating options.

• Audience state of mind: actively researching, comparing vendors, consuming category content
• Success metrics: MQLs, content downloads, webinar registrations, demo requests, email subscribers
• Channel examples: retargeting ads, email nurture sequences, webinars, comparison content, LinkedIn lead gen forms, Google search (non-branded)
• Content formats: gated guides, case studies, ROI calculators, comparison pages, analyst reports, webinar recordings

BOFU — Bottom of Funnel (Decision) Goal: remove friction and give the final push toward conversion.

• Audience state of mind: near-ready to buy or already in sales process, needs final justification
• Success metrics: SQLs, opportunities created, pipeline, trial starts, purchases, revenue
• Channel examples: branded search, retargeting with offer/urgency, SDR outreach, customer reference calls, sales enablement content, free trial/freemium
• Content formats: demos, free trials, pricing pages, ROI business cases, customer reference calls, implementation guides

Note on funnel leakage: The most common briefing mistake is running all channels at MOFU while skipping TOFU. If your audience has not heard of your company or category, MOFU content will have no one to reach. Budget at least 20-30% of spend to TOFU for awareness-stage campaigns.

Channel Role Matrix

Use this table to assign channels the right role in the campaign. "Best for" is a general guideline — your specific audience and budget should override it.

Use these numbers to:

1. Sanity-check KPI targets before committing to them
2. Benchmark channel-level performance against industry baselines
3. Set realistic expectations with stakeholders about timelines and CPLs

Anti-Patterns

These are the six most common ways campaign briefs fail. Review each before finalizing.

1. The "awareness and leads" goal trap Setting awareness AND lead generation as co-equal primary goals is not a strategy — it is indecision. These goals require different channel mixes, different content, different success metrics, and different timelines. Pick one as primary. The other can be a secondary objective with a lighter budget allocation.

2. The vanity metric objective Setting impressions, clicks, or MQLs as the primary KPI without connecting them to pipeline or revenue. Demand gen exists to drive business outcomes. Every campaign brief should include at least one metric that a CFO or CEO would care about — pipeline influenced, opportunities created, or revenue contributed.

3. The audience defined by demographics only "VP of Marketing at companies with 200-1000 employees" is a demographic target, not an audience insight. A brief must also specify what this person believes today, what they are afraid of, what objection they bring to the first sales call, and what they are trying to achieve in their role. Demographic targeting tells you where to find them; psychographic insight tells you what to say.

4. The channel list without rationale Listing 8 channels in the channel mix without explaining why each one belongs, what role it plays, and how the channels hand off to each other. Every channel in a brief should have a specific job. If you cannot explain why a channel is in the mix in one sentence, cut it.

5. The brief written after the assets Brief written after the creative team has already started (or finished) building. The brief becomes a documentation exercise instead of a strategic guardrail. Brief first, always. If assets already exist, do a retroactive brief — it is still worth doing to catch misalignment.

6. No optimization checkpoint A brief with a launch date but no mid-campaign review date. All campaigns need a 2-4 week check-in to evaluate early signals — CTR, open rates, landing page conversion — and adjust before the majority of budget is spent. Budget this time into the timeline explicitly.

Produce the complete campaign brief in the following structure. Replace all bracketed placeholder text with actual content based on the intake answers. Do not leave placeholders in the final output.

• Primary audience is specific enough — not "all marketers" but defined by title, segment, and behavioral qualifiers
• "Current belief" and "desired belief" are documented for the primary audience
• Three distinct messaging pillars that address three different aspects of the buyer decision — not three versions of the same claim
• Each pillar has a concrete proof point, not a placeholder
• Every channel has an assigned funnel stage and a specific job — no channel is "general awareness" without a defined metric
• Primary KPI has a target number, not just a metric name
• Budget allocation across channels is explicit and adds up to 100%
• Asset list is complete enough for a creative/copy team to start without a briefing meeting
• Timeline includes a mid-campaign optimization checkpoint with a named owner
• UTM parameters are defined and documented
• Attribution model is defined before launch (not after)
• Sales team has reviewed the brief and agreed on lead follow-up SLA
• Brief has been approved by all named stakeholders in Section 10

Notes for Generating This Brief

When producing a brief from intake answers:

1. Do not invent specifics. If the user did not provide a budget number, write "TBD — recommend [range] based on [goal and channel mix]." Do not fabricate a number.

2. Push back on vague goals. If the campaign goal is "increase awareness," ask: awareness of what, with whom, measurable how? A brief with a vague goal will produce vague results.

3. Flag the anti-patterns proactively. If the intake reveals multiple simultaneous primary goals, channel lists without rationale, or no KPI targets, call this out before producing the brief and recommend a fix.

4. Scale the channel mix to the budget. A $10K campaign with 8 channels is not a campaign — it is 8 underfunded experiments. Recommend focusing on 2-3 channels at that budget level.

5. Reference campaign-benchmarks.md when setting KPI targets. Use industry benchmarks to help the user set ambitious but achievable numbers. Do not let them set a 40% email open rate target for a cold list, or a $5 CPL target for LinkedIn.
