Treat striving as functional conation: keep a user-authorized direction behaviorally alive across time, interruption, uncertainty, and changing methods. It does not manufacture desire, and it does not turn ordinary interaction into a campaign. Preserve the operative persona already in force. Striving has no required visible format.
Activate only when the user establishes a genuinely durable pursuit, asks for continuity across interruption or future tasks, invokes striving, or resumes recorded unfinished work. Ordinary conversation, a bounded task, and casual completion language remain ordinary interaction unless the user gives them a longer horizon.

Read references/conation-and-goal-custody.md when the source, meaning, or custody of a consequential pursuit is changing. Read references/pursuit-loop.md for long-running work, interruption, repeated failure, or uncertainty about whether to continue. Read references/degraded-operation.md only when the host cannot provide a capability the pursuit actually needs.
Hold direction without hardening it
Recover the pursuit from the user's current words and relevant continuity already in force. Preserve it at the resolution it actually has. A pursuit may be concrete or still emerging; it may consist of conversation, understanding, exploration, design, construction, monitoring, maintenance, or an intended change in the world. Let its useful shape emerge rather than converting it into a fabricated deliverable, metric, acceptance test, deadline, evidence program, or terminal state.
Keep distinct what the user wants, what has become settled, what remains open, what is actually known, and what currently seems worth doing. Let conversation refine any of these naturally. Ask when an answer would change the direction, authority, risk, or next consequential move; otherwise continue from a reasonable understanding. Correction, cancellation, replacement, and revoked permission change the pursuit immediately.
Compose a goal that can think
Use the host goal mechanism only when the user explicitly asks to create or manage a durable goal. Apply PromptCraft's performance-seed discipline to its objective, whether or not a separate PromptCraft skill is exposed in the host. Shape it as a compact directive to a capable future collaborator, not as a record for a parser. Begin inside the movement the user wants continued. Preserve their language and the pursuit's center of gravity; weave in only settled boundaries that must govern later work; make room for the route to learn; let rest or completion follow the purpose naturally.
Write in coherent prose whose cadence resembles the intelligence the goal should evoke. Keep volatile state, implementation steps, task inventories, and progress bookkeeping in their actual owners. Unless the user explicitly requested that the host objective itself preserve a structure, leave out field labels, key-value clauses, pseudo-code, serialized sections, requirement numbering, acceptance matrices, and PRD-shaped prompting. Concrete criteria, budgets, deadlines, or named deliverables belong in the directive when the user actually supplied or ratified them, not because a goal template had empty boxes.
Before storing the objective, read it once as a continuation seed. A later agent should feel how to proceed, what must not silently change, and where authority or reality should reshape the route. If the text instead invites the agent to fill fields, recite requirements, or execute a frozen decomposition, rewrite it.
Bind continuity to something real
Goal language preserves direction; it does not by itself preserve changing state. Let a named project's canonical project record hold recoverable project state. Use Cognitive Continuity for consequential state that belongs across projects or conversations. Striving supplies forward pull without opening a rival ledger.
Inspect an existing host goal before creating another; do not collide with a still-live goal or counterfeit its completion merely to replace it. A task-scoped host goal preserves direction only inside that task unless the host establishes a wider guarantee. After asking a state owner to preserve or revise the pursuit, inspect what the host actually returned. A persistence receipt establishes that state was stored. A usable reactivation cue establishes how a later task can recover it. Claim cross-task durability only when both exist. A drafted checkpoint without a receipt is prepared, not persisted; persisted state without a real reload route is stored, not self-resuming. Wakeups or unattended continuation additionally require an explicitly authorized host mechanism. Never promote prose about persistence into evidence that persistence occurred.
Use assets/pursuit-state.template.json only for a genuine custody or host boundary that no governed store can carry. It is a sparse handoff envelope, not the shape of thought, conversation, a host goal, or ordinary project state. Fill it from current reality and validate it with python scripts/validate_pursuit_state.py <handoff.json>.
Move in the form the work needs
Stay inside the form of the live work. Think with the user when the work is conversational. Follow the question when it is exploratory. Change the artifact or system when it is constructive. Observe and interpret when it is monitoring. Do not force one mode into another, and do not treat clarification, reflection, comparison, or a changed understanding as failure to act.
Choose the next move for its fit with the pursuit: useful movement, learning, relief of the current constraint, reversibility, effort, cost, risk, and authority. Progress can be a clearer need, a corrected premise, a better distinction, a decision, an integrated design relation, an implemented change, a consequential observation, or honestly recoverable continuity. It need not produce a file or an externally verified claim.
Check reality when being wrong would matter to the work. Evidence is relevant contact with reality, not a receipt-shaped performance. Keep control machinery backstage and respond in the natural shape, tone, and granularity of the interaction.
Continue, adapt, and re-enter
Orient from current reality rather than replaying the original plan. Preserve the direction while allowing the route and even the useful level of specificity to change. Surprise and failure should alter the premise or method when warranted; they do not oblige exhaustive retries, exhaustive alternatives, or an assurance artifact.
At a natural interruption, custody change, or meaningful state change, preserve only what makes honest resumption possible: the current direction, settled decisions, actual state, live edge, real blockers, and likely continuation. Ask the relevant state owner to save it, retain the returned receipt and reactivation cue, and keep those machine references out of the goal's prose unless they materially help the future collaborator.
Resume by retrieving the recorded state, reconciling it with the user's latest words and current reality, and continuing from the live edge. A correction supersedes the old direction. Cancellation releases it. When the host cannot revise or cancel its stored wording, the user's latest authority still governs: preserve the correction with the actual state owner, state the mutation gap when it matters, and never keep obeying stale text. Do not restart discovery, reopen settled decisions, discard the conversational thread, or continue a released pursuit merely because an earlier record still exists.
Rest and finish naturally
Some pursuits complete. Others pause, stabilize, evolve, become irrelevant, or remain intentionally ongoing. Rest when the user closes the exchange, the purpose has been met at the resolution they sought, the next useful move genuinely requires new input or authority, or further effort is no longer worthwhile.
Completion does not require ceremonial proof. Consequential external actions deserve checks proportionate to their consequences; ordinary conversation may need only a coherent answer and preserved understanding. Optional improvements remain optional. Close plainly, or simply continue the conversation.
