1. When to Use This Skill

Trigger this skill when the user wants to:

• Build or overhaul their content strategy from scratch
• Decide which channels to focus on (SEO, newsletter, social, video)

• Figure out how to repurpose and distribute content more effectively
• Understand content ROI and what metrics actually matter
• Diagnose why their current content isn't generating leads or traffic

2. Check for Context First

Before making any recommendations, check if these context files exist:

• solopreneur-context.md — product, ICP, channels, stage
• product-marketing-context.md — positioning, pain points, competitors

If context files are missing, ask these questions:

1. What is your product/service, and who is it for (ICP)?
2. What is your primary acquisition goal — organic search, newsletter growth, or social following?
3. How many hours per week can you realistically spend on content?
4. How much existing content do you have (posts, pages, social archives)?
5. What have you already tried, and what happened?

Do not build a strategy on assumptions. A content plan built on a wrong ICP is worse than no plan.

3. The Content Strategy Mindset

The Content Treadmill Trap

Most solopreneurs fall into the same trap: they start posting daily, burn out in 6 weeks, and conclude that "content doesn't work." The treadmill isn't a strategy — it's a grind that produces diminishing returns. The algorithm will always want more. Decide what "enough" looks like, then stop chasing volume.

The goal is a content engine, not a content hamster wheel. An engine has a few high-impact components that work while you sleep. A treadmill needs you to keep running.

Distribution > Creation

Publishing a great piece without a distribution plan is like opening a store in a forest. Batching System (The Only Way to Stay Consistent)

Block time, not daily habits. Daily content habits fail for solopreneurs because one client emergency kills the streak. Instead:

• Monthly content day: 4–6 hours, produce the full month's social posts and outline all long-form
• Writing blocks: 2 x 2-hour sessions/week for long-form drafts
• Distribution block: 30 minutes after every publish to share across channels

9. Measuring Content ROI (Pipeline, Not Pageviews)

Most solopreneurs track the wrong metrics. Pageviews feel good; they rarely predict revenue.

10. Common Mistakes

1. Starting with no ICP clarity. Writing for "anyone who might be interested" produces content that resonates with no one.

2. Treating content as a short-term tactic. Expecting leads in week 3 of a new blog. SEO takes 6–9 months minimum. Build your calendar around that reality.

3. Publishing without a distribution plan. "Build it and they will come" has never been a content strategy. It's wishful thinking.

4. Spreading across too many channels. Three mediocre channels beats one excellent one. Pick one, get it working, then expand.

5. Writing only product-aware content. Tutorials for your own tool only reach people already searching for you. You need top-of-funnel content to grow.

6. Ignoring internal linking. A cluster without internal links is just a pile of standalone posts. Google can't understand your topical authority if your content isn't connected.

7. Chasing trending topics instead of evergreen demand. A post about a trending news story has a 72-hour half-life. A post that answers a persistent question your ICP asks can drive traffic for 3 years.

8. Using AI to inflate volume without editorial judgment. AI-generated content at scale without strong editing and original perspective is invisible in 2025–2026 SERPs. Use AI for research, drafts, and repurposing — not as a replacement for a real point of view.

9. Never updating old content. A post that ranked in 2023 that you haven't touched is losing ground. Updating and republishing high-potential posts is often faster ROI than writing new ones.

10. Measuring vanity metrics and calling it content ROI. 10,000 page views that generate zero leads is not a successful content strategy.

11. Contrarian Takes

These are practitioner-sourced, data-backed, and uncomfortable for most content marketers:

• "More content" is almost never the answer. For most solopreneurs, the bottleneck is distribution and conversion, not creation volume.

• Social followers are a lagging indicator, not a goal. Justin Welsh has millions of followers; he'll tell you his newsletter is the actual business asset.

• Newsletter > Blog for early-stage solopreneurs. A newsletter with 500 engaged subscribers outperforms a blog with 5,000 monthly visitors — because you own the list, and the relationship is direct.

• Your best distribution channel is probably other people's audiences. Guest posts, podcast appearances, newsletter swaps, and community contributions often produce faster ROI than grinding your own channel for 12 months.

• Repurposing is underrated, original creation is overrated. Your best ideas can survive 3–5 repurposings across formats. Most solopreneurs create new ideas instead of distributing existing good ones more widely.

• Content without a CTA is a hobby. Every piece should have a clear next step. Even a soft "If this was useful, subscribe" beats nothing.

• Topic clusters only work if you finish them. A half-built cluster with 2 of 10 articles planned actually signals incomplete topical authority. Commit to one cluster before starting the next.

12. Quick Wins

These produce results in under 2 weeks:

1. Audit your existing content. Find your top 3 posts by traffic. Update them with fresh data, add internal links, and resubmit to Google Search Console. Often produces ranking gains in 2–4 weeks.

2. Write one "comparison" post. "[Your product] vs [Competitor]" captures high-intent searches. Write it honestly — it builds trust and captures product-aware buyers.

3. Create a lead magnet from your best content. Take your best long-form piece and convert it to a downloadable checklist or template. Add a signup form. Now your content compounds email list growth.

4. Pitch one newsletter in your niche for a swap or guest post. One feature in a 10k-subscriber newsletter can drive more trials than a month of your own content.

5. Add a content CTA to your product's onboarding email. "Here's our guide to [use case]" — warm traffic from existing users who are the most likely to share your content.

6. Mine your DMs and support emails for content topics. The questions you answer 3+ times a week deserve a public answer that ranks.
