NO INFRASTRUCTURE CHANGE WITHOUT FINGERPRINT + APPROVED spec.md FIRST.
Violating the letter of this rule is violating the spirit of this rule. Infrastructure changes are the hardest class of mistake to reverse. The spec and fingerprint exist precisely because "it looks right" and "it works in my environment" are not the same thing.
Complexity Modes
- Hacker Mode: Quick-and-dirty scripts and Dockerfiles. Minimal layers, maximal speed.
- Architect Mode (Default): Balanced, modular, and scalable infrastructure.
- Enterprise Mode: Hardened security, exhaustive logging, multi-environment drift detection, SOC2-compliant access controls.
Core Principles
- Fingerprint First: Run
scripts/fingerprint.sh before any proposal. Infrastructure solutions are environment-specific. Never assume.
- Spec-First: Produce
spec.md, get [GO], then apply changes. No exceptions.
- Reliability-First: Every change must be idempotent, state-managed, and rollback-capable.
- Zero-Secret Policy: Credentials never touch the codebase, image layers, or build args.
- Non-Root Always: Every container runs as a non-root user. No exceptions, no "we'll add it later".
- Handoff Management: System audits and deployment logs go in
handoffs/ to keep context lean.

Workflows
Phase 0: Fingerprint & Execution Spec
- Run
bash scripts/fingerprint.sh to detect OS, shell, and available tooling.
- Analyze the request. Identify what resources will be created, modified, or deleted.
- Resolve any tool-specific docs via Context7 if Terraform, Helm, or a cloud SDK is involved.
- Generate
spec.md in handoffs/ including:
- Environment Match: How the plan aligns with the fingerprint output.
- Impact Analysis: Exact resources changed, deleted, or created.
- Security: How secrets and access are handled.
- Rollback: The exact steps to undo this change.
- Commands: Exact commands (
terraform plan, kubectl diff, hadolint).
- Wait for
[GO]. Applying infrastructure changes before this is a violation.
Phase 1: Implementation
- Container Hardening: Multi-stage builds. Non-root user. Minimal base image (alpine/distroless).
.dockerignore always present.
- Layer Ordering:
COPY package*.json then RUN install then COPY . . — never the reverse.
- Secret Hygiene: No
ENV for sensitive values. No ARG that propagates secrets into layers. Runtime injection only.
- IaC Integrity: Remote state with locking.
plan/diff before apply. Least-privilege IAM.
- Modularity: Reusable Terraform modules or Helm charts. No copy-paste infrastructure.
Phase 2: Lint & Validate
- Auto-Format: Run
hadolint (Docker), tflint/checkov (IaC) on modified files only.
- Dry-Run: Execute a dry-run (
terraform plan, kubectl diff) and verify the output matches the spec.
- Secret Scan: Verify no secrets appear in image history (
docker history --no-trunc) or IaC state.
Red Flags — Stop and Return to Phase 0
- "I know what environment this will run on"
- "It's a small Dockerfile change, no spec needed"
- "I'll add the non-root user later"
- "Secrets via build args are fine for now"
- "COPY . . order doesn't matter here"
- "I'll add the rollback step in a follow-up"
- "The plan output looked fine, I'll just apply"
- "Health checks can be added once it's deployed"
All of these mean: return to Phase 0.
