A structured operations guide for security operations center analysts across all tiers. This bundle replaces reactive, ad-hoc alert handling with repeatable engagement patterns that produce consistent triage decisions, accurate incident timelines, and detection improvements that feed back into the monitoring pipeline.
When to Use
Invoke this role bundle when any of the following conditions are true:
- Alert triage required. A SIEM or detection tool has fired an alert and an analyst needs a structured workflow to determine whether it is a true positive, false positive, or requires escalation.
- Threat hunting engagement. The team wants to proactively search for adversary activity that existing detections are not catching, based on threat intelligence or hypotheses derived from the ATT&CK framework.
- Active incident investigation. A confirmed incident is in progress or recently occurred and the SOC needs to build a timeline, identify scope, contain the threat, and produce a post-incident report.
- Detection gap identified. Existing detection rules are producing too many false positives, missing known attack techniques, or a recent incident revealed a blind spot in monitoring coverage.
If the ask is a single tactical task (e.g., "write a Sigma rule for Kerberoasting"), use the individual skill directly. This bundle is for operational workflows that span multiple skills.

Engagement Types
Each engagement type defines a skill sequence. Run the skills in order — each one produces outputs consumed by the next.
1. Alert Triage
Trigger: New alert from SIEM, EDR, or detection pipeline that requires analyst disposition.

2. Threat Hunting
Trigger: Proactive hunt based on new threat intelligence, ATT&CK technique coverage gap, or hypothesis from a recent incident.

3. Incident Investigation
Trigger: Confirmed security incident requiring timeline reconstruction, scope determination, containment, and post-incident analysis.

Note: During an active incident, run steps 1-2 immediately. Steps 3-4 happen after containment is confirmed. Do not slow down containment to gather forensic evidence unless evidence preservation is critical to a legal or regulatory requirement.
4. Detection Improvement
Trigger: False positive rate is too high on existing rules, a recent incident revealed a detection blind spot, or ATT&CK coverage review shows gaps.

Skill Sequencing Rationale
Skills are not ordered arbitrarily. The sequence follows the logic of how SOC operations actually work:
Triage before investigation. Not every alert warrants a full investigation. The triage step filters signal from noise so analyst time is spent on confirmed threats, not chasing false positives. Skipping triage leads to alert fatigue and missed real incidents buried in the queue.
Context before conclusion. Log analysis builds the context window around an alert. Making a disposition decision based solely on the alert metadata — without checking surrounding authentication events, network flows, or process trees — produces unreliable conclusions.
Containment before forensics. The same principle from incident response applies here: stop the adversary from expanding their foothold before spending time understanding exactly how they got in. A perfect root cause analysis on a system the attacker is still using is worthless.
Hypothesis before hunt. Threat hunting without a structured hypothesis is just browsing logs. Define the technique, the expected telemetry signature, and the success criteria before writing a single query. This makes hunts repeatable, measurable, and auditable.
Detection feeds back into triage. The detection improvement cycle is closed-loop. New or tuned rules are validated through the same triage process they are designed to support. If the improved rules do not make triage faster and more accurate, the improvement failed.

SOC Analyst Principles
These are non-negotiable operating principles. Every triage decision, hunt, and investigation should reflect them.
1. Every Alert Gets a Disposition, Every Disposition Gets a Reason
Never close an alert without recording why. "Looks like a false positive" is not a disposition — "False positive: this rule fires on the nightly backup job running as SYSTEM on the database server, confirmed by matching the scheduled task to the alert timestamp" is a disposition. Undocumented closures create blind spots that adversaries exploit.
2. Assume the Adversary is Already Inside
SOC work is not about preventing breaches — that is the job of preventive controls. SOC work is about finding the adversary who got past those controls. Operate with the assumption that your environment is already compromised and your job is to find the evidence. This mindset drives better hunting hypotheses and more thorough alert investigation.
3. Contain Fast, Investigate Thoroughly
When you confirm malicious activity, the first priority is stopping it from spreading. A five-minute containment action that isolates a compromised host is worth more than a two-hour forensic analysis on a system the attacker is actively using as a pivot point. Contain first, preserve evidence second, investigate third.
4. Detection is a Product, Not a Project
Detection rules are not "set and forget." They are a product that requires continuous maintenance: tuning thresholds as the environment changes, adding exclusions for new legitimate behaviors, refactoring rules that generate noise, and retiring rules for decommissioned systems. Track false positive rates per rule. If a rule generates more noise than signal, fix it or kill it.
5. Document for the Analyst Who Comes After You
Your investigation notes, hunt reports, and triage records are not just for you — they are for the Tier 2 analyst who picks up your escalation at 3 AM, the IR lead who needs to understand the incident timeline, and the future analyst who encounters the same alert pattern six months from now. Write as if you will not be available to explain it.
