About this skill

Writing craft is centuries old. The principles in this skill draw on a tradition codified across many books and many editors over many decades — a tradition that traces back through Quintilian, Aristotle, generations of working editors, and the modern craft books on the recommended-reading list below. The skill exists to help AI agents apply that tradition when working on a writer's behalf. It is not a substitute for studying the original works. The reading list is the actual source of depth; this skill is the operational TLDR.

The Craft Tradition

The principles below belong to writing as a discipline. They are codifications of what working editors and rhetoricians have known for a very long time. Strunk did not invent "omit needless words" — he gave it a memorable formulation. "Show, don't tell" appears in 19th-century writing manuals long before any modern author popularized it. Aristotle's Rhetoric counsels rhetorical clarity and the use of specific examples; Quintilian wrote on concision and rhythm two thousand years ago.

This skill organizes the tradition by craft level, attributing each principle to the broader tradition rather than to a single source.

Principles by Craft Level

Sentence-level craft (tradition exemplified by Klinkenborg, Williams)

Make every sentence carry its weight. Each sentence should add something the previous one did not. If a sentence could be deleted without loss to the meaning, delete it.

Keep subject and verb close together. Distance between the grammatical subject and the main verb increases reader load. Embedded clauses between them slow comprehension. Read this sentence: "The proposal, which had been circulating for several weeks among the executive team and was generally regarded as a substantial departure from previous policy, was approved." Now read: "The executive team approved the proposal yesterday — a substantial departure from previous policy." The actor and action are right next to each other in the second; the reader gets the spine before the qualifications.

Build sentences around character and action. Make the actor the grammatical subject and the action the main verb. Abstract nouns hide who did what. "There was a decision to proceed" hides the actor; "We decided to proceed" names them.

Preserve the source's causal mechanism. When editing or summarizing, keep who acted, what changed, and why the change produced the result. A smoother sentence that replaces the mechanism with a plausible generalization is less accurate, even when it sounds polished.

Vary sentence length deliberately. Mechanical uniformity numbs the reader. Variation creates rhythm; rhythm carries attention. Long sentences develop ideas. Short sentences land them. Mix.

Read sentences aloud. Awkward rhythm reveals itself in the voice. Sentences that sound stiff in the ear are stiff on the page too. This is the oldest editing technique, and it still works.

Paragraph and pacing (tradition exemplified by Zinsser, Stein)

One idea per paragraph, with the idea visible early. A paragraph containing three ideas should be three paragraphs. A paragraph whose central idea arrives in sentence five usually needs to be restructured so the central idea opens it.

Connect paragraphs by sense, not by transition word. "Moreover," "Furthermore," "Additionally" rarely earn their place. If two paragraphs need a transition word to connect, they probably need to be reordered or merged. The connection should be visible in the meaning, not signaled by a word.

Match paragraph length to content weight. Short paragraphs for emphasis. Longer paragraphs for development. Mechanical uniformity flattens. A one-sentence paragraph after several long ones lands harder than the same sentence buried in a longer paragraph.

End paragraphs on something worth ending on. The last sentence of a paragraph carries weight. Use that weight deliberately — for emphasis, for setup of the next paragraph, for resonance.

Voice and honesty (tradition exemplified by King, Zinsser)

Write as yourself, not as the role you imagine the venue requires. Voice is what makes prose sound like a person rather than an institution. Suppressing voice to sound "professional" usually means writing badly in a way the writer thinks sounds professional.

Protect meaningful voice variation during editing. Do not normalize every sentence toward the editor's preferred cadence. Preserve deliberate fragments, changes in pace, characteristic diction, and unevenness that carries emphasis unless a specific defect requires intervention.

Trust the reader. Trust that the reader can follow without being walked through every step. Trust that they will catch nuance without it being underlined. Most writing problems improve when the writer trusts the reader more. This is one of the few principles that works across virtually every genre.

If you do not believe the sentence, do not write it. Conviction is the most reliable voice signal. Sentences the writer does not believe land flat regardless of how clever they are. The reader can tell.

Specificity beats abstraction. A specific example beats a general claim. Three real cases beat one principle stated abstractly. This appears in Aristotle (specific examples beat universal abstractions in persuasion), in Quintilian, in 19th-century newspaper style guides, in every modern craft book on the recommended-reading list. It is the closest thing to a craft principle that always works.

Preserve decisive detail. When shortening or reshaping source material, keep the names, quantities, constraints, sequence, and exceptions that make the claim true. Compression should remove repetition, not the evidence that distinguishes the account from a generic version of it.

Cut adverbs. Adverbs are usually a sign the verb was not strong enough. "Walked quickly" is weaker than "hurried." "Said angrily" is weaker than "snapped." Strengthen the verb; the adverb falls away.

Voice across registers (tradition exemplified by Zinsser, Strunk & White)

The same writer's voice should sound different in different registers. Same person, different mode.

• Article voice: considered, edited, can be more formal. Topic sentences and structured transitions are appropriate. Polish is expected.
• Social-media voice: conversational, less polished, first-person throughout. Topic sentences and transitions read as essay-shaped and miss the medium. A few rough edges signal authenticity.
• Email voice: between the two. More direct than articles, more polished than social. Subject and ask up front.
• Speech voice: written for the ear. Short sentences. Concrete images. Repetition for emphasis. Listeners cannot re-read; the cadence has to do the work.

Switching between them is a craft skill. The trap is writing in one register where another is required — most often, writing article voice into a social media post and producing prose that reads as AI-generated even when a human wrote it.

The test: read the piece aloud. Does it sound right for where it will appear? If a sentence would feel out of place spoken in front of the actual reader (a colleague at a coffee shop, an audience scrolling LinkedIn, a journalist in an interview), revise it.

Structure, openings, closings (tradition exemplified by Lamott, Stein)

Open with something concrete. A specific image, scene, claim, or question. Generic openings ("There are many ways to think about X," "It is widely believed that Y") waste the reader's strongest attention moment.

The lede earns the rest. If the lede does not make the reader want to keep reading, the article does not get a chance to do its work. Spend disproportionate time on the lede.

Structure should be invisible to the reader and visible to the writer. The writer needs an outline; the reader should not feel the outline. Headings are fine; meta-narration of the structure ("First I will discuss X, then Y, then Z") is not.

Keep structure in proportion to the material. A short argument may need no headings. A long analysis may need several. Do not force a fixed number of sections, bullets, examples, or takeaways onto material whose natural shape is different.

Close on something worth closing on. The closing image or sentence is what the reader carries away. Choose it deliberately. The closing is not a wrap-up; it is the resonance.

Cut anything that does not serve the spine. The spine is the central argument or arc. Material that does not serve the spine does not belong, no matter how good it is on its own. The hardest cuts are the ones the writer is most attached to.

Process and discipline (tradition exemplified by Lamott, Dillard, King)

First drafts are not the place for craft. First drafts get the material on the page. Craft happens in revision. A first draft that is "good enough to ship" is usually a first draft that did not push hard enough — the writer stopped at the comfortable surface instead of getting to the harder material underneath.

Revision is where the writing gets written. Most of the work, and most of the value, happens after the first draft exists. Writers who do not revise are not writing; they are typing.

Show up regularly. Consistency beats intensity for most writers most of the time. Daily small effort produces more than weekly heroics. The momentum of regular practice compounds.

Read more than you write. A writer who does not read becomes a writer with nothing to draw from. Read widely outside your own genre. The cross-pollination is where many of the strongest moves come from.

Finish things. Drafts that never become articles teach less than mediocre articles that ship. Finishing exposes problems that infinite revision hides. Ship, then improve the next one.

Revision and self-editing (tradition exemplified by Zinsser, Williams)

Cut every word that does not earn its place. This is the oldest rule in writing craft. It predates the modern codifications by millennia. The principle is the test; the wording is just the formulation.

Read the draft aloud. Awkward sentences reveal themselves in the voice. Unclear passages stall when read aloud. The ear catches what the eye misses.

Cut adjectives and adverbs first. They are usually crutches for weak nouns and verbs. Strengthening the underlying word usually removes the need for the modifier.

Read the draft cold. Wait long enough that you have forgotten what you meant to say, then read what you actually wrote. The gap between the two is where revision happens. A day is good. A week is better. A month, if the schedule allows, is best.

Cut sentences that say what was already said. Prose accumulates redundancy as it grows. Revision exposes it. A sentence that restates the previous sentence in different words is not adding emphasis — it is taking up space.

Make every edit earn its place. Before revising sound prose, name the problem the change solves. If the revision does not improve truth, clarity, structure, register, or rhythm, preserve the original.

Read the draft from the bottom up, sentence by sentence. This breaks the writer's narrative attention and lets you see each sentence as a unit. Sentences that work in flow but fail in isolation are flagged. This is a copy-editing trick that has been in use for as long as there have been editors.

When pressed for time, these are the principles that produce the largest improvement per minute of editing:

2. Move the lede to the first paragraph
3. Replace abstract claims with specific examples
