Overview

This skill covers how to onboard, activate, and retain members in a B2B professional community — including engagement programming, event strategy, metrics, and the structural decisions that separate high-trust communities from noisy ones. All practices are sourced exclusively from Exit Five podcast guests across three episodes. No general best practices have been added.

Onboarding New Members

Collect detailed intake information during onboarding to enable targeted engagement later. During the onboarding flow, systematically gather each member's role, experience level, current challenges, and areas of expertise. Store and tag this data so it can be used to surface the right members when relevant questions arise in the community. Send an onboarding email that spells out the engagement playbook. Immediately after signup, send a welcome email — from a real person such as the community manager — that explains exactly how to get value from the community. Specify concrete actions: ask a question, use search before posting, or opt into the member matchmaking program. Do not assume members will figure out how to engage on their own. Explicitly teach members the engagement behaviors you want during onboarding. Beyond the welcome email, highlight specific members or roles new members should connect with (e.g., "There's a VP of Marketing in here — you probably want to talk to this person"). Driving Ongoing Engagement

Implement a structured monthly matchmaking program to force peer-to-peer connections. Create a formal opt-in matchmaking program where members state their current challenges or interests and are automatically paired with peers who share similar roles or needs. Use a dedicated tool (e.g., Matcha) to handle matching based on criteria like job title, company size, and specialization. Tag subject-matter experts in member questions to drive participation and build trust. When members post questions, proactively tag relevant experts — other members or team members — who can answer. Do this almost daily, not just occasionally. This creates a visible pattern: members see that if they ask a question, knowledgeable people will respond. Guarantee at least one recurring monthly event that delivers standalone value. Establish a minimum of one live or asynchronous event per month that provides meaningful value even if a member does nothing else in the community that month. Align value delivery frequency to your billing cycle. Provide meaningful value to members at least once per billing period. For monthly billing, focus on one to three high-impact engagement plays per month rather than attempting many things at lower quality. Use weekly digest emails to promote community features and drive adoption. Send a weekly email digest highlighting upcoming events, new features, and tips for using the community. Treat it like a mini product newsletter — promote features as if they were product launches. Keep it curated and, where possible, automated through your community platform. Event Strategy

Prioritize member-led and peer-focused events over company-led presentations. When running community events, favor formats where members share their own work and experiences and attendees can participate in open discussion. Avoid formats where company employees present to members — members can get that from webinars and podcasts. The goal is peer exchange, not passive listening. (Source: Matt Carnevale, Episode #320)

Use in-person events to warm up and strengthen online community interactions. Host in-person events where a significant portion of attendees have already interacted online. The familiarity built in person carries back into digital interactions — members who have met face-to-face recognize each other online, feel more connected, and engage more meaningfully in the community. Retention and Churn

Use content and education to acquire members; use connection to retain them. Content and educational offerings attract people to join a community. What keeps them engaged long-term is the ability to make real connections with peers. Market content and events to drive acquisition, but focus community management efforts on facilitating peer relationships. Track the direct relationship between engagement and churn to justify investment. Monitor churn rate over time and correlate it with engagement metrics. As engagement increases, churn should decrease. Use this data to justify investment in engagement initiatives and to prioritize which engagement plays to focus on. Remove self-promotion opportunities to improve member experience. Eliminate dedicated spaces for self-promotion and actively remove self-promotional content from the community feed. Self-promotion degrades the experience for members seeking peer-to-peer discussion. Removing it increases time spent in the community and improves the quality of content members encounter. Metrics and Community Health

Treat the community as a real product with a roadmap and metrics. Manage the community as a formal product: assign a dedicated owner, maintain a product roadmap, conduct regular feedback loops, and hold recurring reviews of engagement metrics. Use NPS as the primary community health metric, surveyed twice per year. Measure community satisfaction using Net Promoter Score — asking members how likely they are to recommend the community. Run formal NPS surveys twice per year as structured checkpoints. Supplement with continuous feedback from daily community interactions, member messages, and churn exit surveys. Prioritize trust and quality of members over raw activity metrics. Shift from measuring community success by discussion volume and post frequency to measuring by the quality of interactions and trust among members. Members increasingly prefer a smaller, curated group of trustworthy peers over a large, noisy community. What NOT To Do

• Do not rely on company-led virtual events as the primary engagement mechanism. Members don't join communities to be talked at by company representatives. Virtual events where employees present to members are overrated as a community engagement tool. (Source: Matt Carnevale, Episode #320)
• Do not allow self-promotional content in the community feed. It clutters the experience and drives members away from the peer-to-peer discussions they actually came for. (Source: Matt Carnevale, Episode #233)
