Overview

This skill covers how to build and deliver presentations that resonate — whether you're speaking at a conference, pitching to a board, or briefing executives. It addresses audience analysis, structural frameworks, content development, slide philosophy, and delivery mindset. Start With Your Audience, Not Your Slides

Define your audience before touching any deck. When building a presentation, start with a blank outline and ask: Who is in the audience? What do they want to hear? Do not open an existing deck and start copying slides — this is "the road to hell." Reusing slides from a quarterly business review for a board meeting, or analyst briefing slides for a customer pitch, will produce the wrong presentation every time because each audience has different needs and concerns. Identify one specific real person you want to help before writing a single word. Before outlining a talk, identify one person you know personally who could benefit from your message. Structuring Your Talk: The Four-Part Framework

1. Tension

Begin by introducing a real problem or pain point your audience experiences — do not jump to your main points or credentials. Use storytelling, analogies, and specific details to make the tension tangible and emotionally resonant. Take time to help the audience feel the weight of the problem; do not rush through it. 2. Trust

After establishing tension, share a brief, genuine story about a time you faced a similar challenge or made a mistake. The story should be somewhat embarrassing or show you in a vulnerable light — this is what builds trust and connection. Do not use this section to establish credentials or prove expertise; instead, show that you've walked in the audience's shoes. 3. Teaching

4. Takeaway

Close with a story about a person other than yourself who followed the playbook you just taught and achieved success. This positions the audience member as the hero rather than you, and demonstrates that your ideas work for others — not just for you. It leaves the audience with a relatable example they can envision themselves in. Alternative closing options include a clear call to action or vision casting about the future, but the third-party success story is particularly effective for making ideas feel transferable. Developing Each Main Point: The Three Cs Framework

For every main point in the Teaching section, structure it with three elements: (Source: Vincent Pierri, Episode #272)

1. Catchy one-liner — A memorable, punchy statement that captures the core idea. This is the intellectual moment.
2. Creative analogy — An analogy pulled from everyday life that makes the concept click emotionally before you explain it tactically. This is the emotional moment.
3. Concrete example — A case study or real-world example that shows the idea in practice. This is the practical moment.

Spend balanced time on all three elements. Do not rush through the one-liner and analogy to get to the example — the emotional resonance of the analogy is what makes the example land.

Executive and Board Presentations

Answer the question directly before providing context. When a board member or senior executive asks you a question, answer it directly and concisely first — then offer caveats or nuance. Do not tell a story or provide a lengthy explanation before answering. For example, if asked "What is our churn rate?", answer "Twelve percent, measured on an ARR basis last quarter" before offering context like "There are other ways to measure it" or "It varies by cohort." Board members and executives have a series of questions lined up; storytelling burns their time. Answer the question, then leave a thread for follow-up if they want to dig deeper. Consider creating a friendly internal code word (e.g., "bus cost") to remind your team to answer questions without over-explaining. (Source: Dave Kellogg, Episode #342)

Never show audience-inappropriate content. For example, never show a competitive positioning chart to a customer — that type of content is appropriate for analysts only. Slide Philosophy and Delivery

Practice your talk before building your deck. Start practicing using only your outline (the four-part structure with Three Cs for each point) before creating or heavily designing slides. Develop natural delivery and conversational pacing without being constrained by slide content. Once you're comfortable with the flow, build the deck as a visual accent — not a script. Use minimal slides to maximize audience connection. Reduce the number of slides and bullet points to keep audience attention on you rather than the screen. Delivery Mindset

Focus on helping the audience, not on performing. When you're on stage, redirect your focus from nervousness or performance anxiety to the question: How can I help this person succeed? What difference will this make in somebody's life? This mindset shift helps you stay grounded, speak authentically, and connect with the audience rather than getting caught in your head about delivery mechanics. Prioritize authenticity over sounding expert. Draw from your real experience and what you've actually done, rather than trying to sound smart or include industry best practices you haven't personally tested. Audiences respond to authentic stories and genuine insights far more than to polished expertise. If you try to sound like an expert without grounding ideas in your own experience, you'll struggle to develop the Three Cs framework and will likely resort to generic content. Use humor cautiously. If humor is not a natural part of your communication style, do not force it into your talk. Attempting humor that doesn't land creates awkwardness and can derail your delivery as you spiral thinking about the failed joke. It's better to be less funny than to try to be funny and miss.
