The Story-Problem-Solution-CTA Framework

When structuring marketing copy — emails, landing pages, presentations — use this four-part sequence:

1. Tell a story to hook the reader emotionally
2. Present the problem or conflict
3. Show the solution and back it up with concrete examples
4. End with a clear call-to-action

The Five Immutable Laws of Storytelling

Use these five laws as a checklist when reviewing any marketing copy. Violating any one of them breaks the story:

1. No conflict, no story — Every story requires unresolved tension
2. No people, no story — Stories are about real people, not abstractions
3. No 'but' and 'so,' no story — These words (used implicitly) drive direction and advance the narrative
4. No ordinary, no story — Start small and make it feel big; don't open with massive metrics
5. If you start explaining, no story — Show examples instead of explaining concepts

Positioning vs. Story: Know the Difference

Distinguish between these two distinct functions in your marketing:

• Positioning = what you do ("we do X")
• Story = why you do it ("we do X because...")

The job of story is to make your positioning make sense by pointing at it and explaining the reasoning. Apply this distinction across all marketing surfaces: homepages, hooks, offers, ads, social, email, and sales decks. Building Conflict and Tension

Make Conflict the Foundation of Every Story

Build marketing stories around conflict — the core element that makes narratives compelling. Identify the unresolved tension in your positioning and resolve it through your story. Identify Your Story's Enemy Using Three Categories

Every story needs an enemy to create conflict. Use this A-B-C framework to identify which enemy your story should target:

• (A) Direct competitors — other companies solving the same problem
• (B) Competing approaches — alternative ways to solve the same problem
• (C) Beliefs you stand against — convictions rooted in your product that point back to your positioning

Open Presentations by Building Tension, Not Stating Points

Begin presentations by introducing a real problem or pain point your audience experiences — not by jumping to your main points or credentials. Use storytelling, analogies, and specific details to make the tension tangible and emotionally resonant. Take time to help the audience feel the weight of the problem; do not rush through it. Narrative Structure and Momentum

Use 'But' and 'So' Implicitly to Drive Story Direction

The words "but" and "so" should appear implicitly between sentences to create narrative momentum — not necessarily as literal words in every sentence. The underlying logic between connected ideas should follow this structure:

• "But" changes direction
• "So" advances the plot

Develop Each Main Point Using the Three Cs

For each main point in a teaching section or presentation, structure it with three elements:

1. Catchy one-liner — a punchy, memorable statement that captures the core idea (the intellectual moment)
2. Creative analogy — drawn from everyday life, makes the concept click emotionally before you explain it tactically (the emotional moment)
3. Concrete example or case study — shows the idea in practice (the practical moment)

People, Examples, and Specificity

Tell Stories Through Real People, Not Abstract Concepts

When communicating a capability or feature, do not talk about the feature itself — talk about a real person who embodies or benefits from it. Introduce a character and tell their story. Real people create connection; abstractions create indifference. (Source: Harry Dry, Episode #303)

Show Examples Instead of Explaining Concepts

When you are tempted to explain a concept or benefit, replace the explanation with a concrete example. Examples are more memorable and emotionally resonant than explanations. If you find yourself writing "we help you do X because Y," replace it with a specific story or scenario that demonstrates X and Y in action. Apply this to ads, homepages, sales decks, and emails. Start Small and Make It Feel Big

It is easier to make something small feel big than to make something big feel big. Instead of opening with massive metrics (e.g., "billions of hours saved"), start with a relatable, small detail and build from there. For example: rather than bragging about billions of hours saved, start with the cost of a $5 coffee and show all the interruptions and time costs involved in expensing it. Use Analogies to Make Complex Concepts Accessible

When explaining complex or technical product concepts, use analogies from familiar domains to make them relatable. For example, use basketball to explain marketing mix modeling — just as you cannot evaluate one player's impact in isolation, you cannot evaluate one marketing channel in isolation. To generate these analogies, prompt an AI tool to connect your product concept with a personal interest or familiar domain. Building Trust in Presentations

Share a Vulnerable Story Before Teaching

After establishing tension, share a brief, genuine story about a time you faced a similar challenge or made a mistake. The story should be somewhat embarrassing or show you in a vulnerable light — this is what builds trust and connection with the audience. Close with a Third-Party Success Story

In the takeaway section of a talk, tell a story about a person other than yourself who followed the playbook you just taught and achieved success. This positions the audience member as the hero rather than you, and demonstrates that your ideas work for others. It leaves the audience with a relatable example they can envision themselves in. Alternative closings include a clear call to action or vision casting, but the third-party success story is particularly effective for making ideas feel transferable. Positioning Narrative and Defensibility

Build a Story Only Your Company Can Tell

A great story built on weak positioning advantages your competitors — because they can tell the same story. When crafting your narrative:

1. Start with your actual differentiated value
2. Build a story around it that only you can authentically tell

Applying Storytelling Inside the Organization

Start Story Development with the Sales Deck

If you are introducing storytelling to a company that is skeptical about it, begin with the sales deck — not marketing collateral. Every company does sales, and the sales pitch is essentially the story: why should a customer pick you over alternatives? Improving the sales deck's narrative proves the value of story in a context leadership already understands. Use Storytelling in Cross-Functional Team Meetings

Attend regular cross-functional team meetings (customer success, sales, engineering, etc.) and deliver carefully prepared presentations that tell a compelling story about marketing initiatives — rather than simply listing projects and timelines. Focus on narrative arc and impact rather than process. This approach generates organic interest and volunteers from other teams who want to get involved in or support marketing programs.
