Overview

This skill covers B2B thought leadership content strategy: how to build authority, develop ownable ideas, choose the right formats and channels, and sustain a content engine that drives market perception and demand. All practices are sourced exclusively from guests on the Exit Five podcast. No general best practices have been added beyond what guests explicitly recommended.

Developing Your Core Idea and Point of View

Identify and name a specific problem, not a category. Rather than trying to create or own a new category name, identify and name a specific problem your target audience experiences. Examples: "revenue leak," "go-to-market bloat," "the great ignore," "evidence gap." This is called a "conceptual scoop"—you observe a trend or problem and give it a name that resonates with your ICP. Pick one word to own. Identify a single word that represents what you want to be known for in your market. This word serves as your North Star internally (keeping content focused) and externally (carving out mindshare). The word should trigger mentions in closed-door conversations where prospects discuss solutions to their problems. Ensure it meets three criteria: your audience cares about it, you have expertise in it, and you sell it. Once chosen, commit to executing your content strategy around that word consistently. Develop 2–3 conviction-backed positions. Identify 2–3 specific hills you will die on within your niche and articulate them with conviction. These should be contrarian but grounded in your experience—not contrarian for shock value. State the obvious publicly and repeatedly. Ideas that seem obvious to you often represent a competitive advantage because few people have the courage or clarity to state them publicly. If something feels obvious to you, it's likely because you've thought deeply about it—but most people haven't. Stating the obvious clearly and repeatedly can differentiate you in a crowded market. Prioritize authenticity over sounding smart. Content Frameworks and Models

Use the Authority Flywheel. Build a repeatable content loop that reinforces your ownable idea by consistently addressing four elements: (1) the problem you're solving, (2) your point of view on that problem, (3) the big promise or outcome people will get from working with you or using your solution, and (4) proof or evidence that your approach works. Repeat this cycle across all content and channels. This creates momentum and allows you to say the same thing in a thousand different ways without sounding repetitive, because each piece of content hits different angles of the same core idea. Build thought leadership content by combining three sources: (1) research on workplace trends and emerging topics (using outlets like Morning Brew, industry studies), (2) direct conversations with employees and people outside the company experiencing specific challenges, and (3) real-life observations and pain points. Sustaining a Content Engine

Pair positioning with sustained thought leadership over 6–12 months. Positioning is not a one-time launch. Pair your new positioning with thought leadership (CEO presentations, keynotes, sales decks, product launches, content) that all reinforce the same narrative. Repeat the core message across multiple channels and events over 6–12 months. This repetition is what builds market awareness and internal belief in the positioning. Establish a weekly subject matter expert interview cadence. Schedule recurring interviews (weekly or twice weekly) with internal subject matter experts—executives, solutions engineers, product leaders, or power users—to capture their insights on your category, problems, and solutions. Record and transcribe these interviews, then use AI workflows to convert transcripts into blog posts, social content, and promotional materials. Audience Building and Channel Strategy

Become the go-to resource for your niche. Rather than promoting your product directly, position your brand as the expert resource for a specific audience segment. Your entire content strategy—across search, social, email, and other channels—should answer the questions and solve the problems that audience faces. Pursue SERP domination and mindshare domination as dual goals. SERP domination means owning multiple positions on Google's search results page for keywords relevant to your industry (blog posts, YouTube videos, Twitter threads, social accounts all ranking for the same terms). Mindshare domination means becoming the go-to resource people turn to when they have a problem in your space—before they even search. Invest heavily in enablement content for non-customers. Spend more time and resources creating educational content and enablement for people who are not yet customers than for existing customers. The goal is to educate the broader market on how to use tools and solve problems in your space, positioning your company as a trusted expert. Position brand and thought leadership as the primary go-to-market strategy. Shift from treating brand marketing as a separate, discretionary function to making it the core marketing strategy. SEO and paid ads become supporting channels that feed the audience-building engine, not the primary demand drivers. This requires organizational alignment: the entire marketing team executes around content, thought leadership, and audience growth as the main lever for demand generation. Continue nurturing prospects during buying slowdowns. When buying slows due to budget freezes or economic conditions, maintain relationship-building through content and thought leadership rather than aggressive sales tactics. Executive and Founder Voice

Attribute all content to a specific person and write from their perspective. Stop publishing generic, company-attributed content. Every piece of content—articles, videos, editorials—should be attributed to a specific person on your team and written from their perspective. Include personal anecdotes or experiences that connect to the marketing lesson or insight. The story or anecdote is the hook that gets people to read; the tactical insight is what they stay for. Develop founder or executive thought leadership on LinkedIn if your customers are on the platform. If your target customers are on LinkedIn, invest in founder or executive thought leadership on the platform. Founders have authenticity and interesting things to say. Help them humanize their voice and post regularly. If your customers are not on LinkedIn or you operate in a vertical with strong trade media, prioritize PR and trade media instead. If the CEO lacks a compelling founding story, position them as an industry curator. If your CEO or executive doesn't have a compelling founding story or personal narrative, take a curator path instead of a creator path. Position them as the go-to source for industry news, insights, and trends. They become known for aggregating and commenting on what's happening in their industry, rather than sharing personal origin stories. Start by reading articles, surfacing stats, and sharing strong points of view about industry direction. Share what you're learning and observing rather than positioning yourself as an expert. When starting on LinkedIn, avoid faking expertise or positioning yourself as an authority in areas where you lack real experience. Instead, share what you're actually learning in your current role, analyze case studies of companies doing interesting work, or document your observations without claiming to have all the answers. Write case study-style posts analyzing how other brands execute marketing well. Build your LinkedIn audience by analyzing and writing about case studies of companies or brands you think are doing interesting marketing work. This approach builds your audience and attracts one-to-one relationship opportunities with people at those companies. Match the persona of the person in the video to your target audience personas (e.g., if targeting sales leaders, boost videos from your sales leaders). Category Ownership and Market Education

Own the broader category narrative through thought leadership and content. Beyond product positioning, take ownership of the category itself through thought leadership, content, and playbooks. This includes writing books on the topic, hosting summits, and creating frameworks that help the market understand the category. This elevates the company's position from vendor to category leader. Build category consensus through analyst relations, peer communities, and thought leadership. Build B2B Instagram presence around educational content. Create Instagram content (70%+ of posts) focused on tips, tutorials, tactics, and industry insights rather than product promotion. Educational content is highly shareable, builds trust and credibility, and attracts an audience that views your brand as a go-to resource. This works across serious industries (legal, accounting, HR) and doesn't require memes or entertainment-focused content—education alone can drive engagement and loyalty.
