Rebuttal Strategy (etp-rebuttal)

When to trigger

• An ETP major or minor R&R arrived and you must draft the response
• Reviewers disagree and you need a strategy that does not whipsaw the paper
• A reviewer asks for analysis or theory you are unsure you should provide
• The theory contribution or the practice mandate took fire and must be re-secured
• You need a response-letter structure an editor and reviewers will find easy to verify

The ETP rebuttal mindset

ETP's review is developmental — an R&R is an invitation, and the editor and reviewers have invested in the paper's improvement. The winning posture is gracious, thorough, and responsive: take every point seriously, do the work where it is reasonable, and disagree only with evidence and a clear rationale. A defensive or selective response squanders the goodwill an R&R represents and is the most common way authors lose a winnable revision.

Structure the response letter

• Open with a synthesis thanking the editor and reviewers and summarizing the major changes (e.g., "we re-grounded the mechanism in effectuation theory, added an event-history model addressing survivorship, and rewrote the practice section"). This orients busy readers before the point-by-point.
• Reproduce every comment verbatim, then respond beneath it. Number them (R1.1, R2.3) so the editor can audit coverage.
• For each point: state what you changed, quote the new manuscript text, and give the page/line. "Done" without showing the change is unverifiable and irritates reviewers.
• Lead with the editor's binding concerns in your synthesis even though the letter follows reviewer order — show you read the editor's prioritization.

Handle the three hard cases

Re-secure the two contributions

ETP R&Rs frequently push on (1) whether the mechanism is truly entrepreneurial and (2) whether the practice contribution is real. Treat both as first-order in the revision: if a reviewer said the theory "could be about any firm," your response must show the sharpened entrepreneurial mechanism (with the new text), not merely assert it. If the practice section was called generic, rewrite it to be mechanism-derived and actor-specific, and point to it in the letter. Winning the theory while leaving the practice mandate weak is a classic ETP miss.

Sequence the revision before you write the letter

A common failure is drafting the response letter first and reverse-engineering the manuscript to match it. Do the opposite, in this order:

• Triage by the editor's letter. List concerns as binding (editor-foregrounded), important (raised by a reviewer the editor weighted), and minor. Invest effort in that order.
• Revise the manuscript fully before writing a word of the response. The letter documents changes that exist; it cannot substitute for them.
• Build a change log mapping each comment → manuscript edit → page/line, then turn the log into the point-by-point letter. This guarantees coverage and gives you the quotes the letter needs.
• Re-run the contribution check (theory + practice) on the revised draft, because a heavy revision can quietly shift the claim; make sure the abstract still matches what the paper now delivers.

This sequence is what makes a developmental R&R land: the editor and reviewers can verify, point by point, that their concerns produced concrete change.

Checklist

• Synthesis opening summarizes major changes and acknowledges the editor's priorities
• Every reviewer comment reproduced and answered, numbered for audit
• Each response quotes the new manuscript text with page/line, not just "done"
• Reviewer conflicts handled via the editor's signal, transparently to both
• Resisted requests are declined with evidence and an alternative, not a refusal
• The entrepreneurial mechanism is re-secured with concrete new text
• The practice contribution is rebuilt where it was challenged
• Tone is gracious and developmental throughout

Anti-patterns

• "Done" with no shown text — unverifiable claims that frustrate reviewers
• Selective response — answering easy points, dodging the hard one the editor flagged
• Defensiveness — arguing instead of revising, or dismissing a reviewer
• Whipsawing — satisfying one reviewer in a way that breaks the paper for another, with no editor logic
• Theory-only revision — re-securing the mechanism while leaving the practice mandate thin
• Faking infeasible analysis instead of scoping honestly to limitations

Worked vignette (illustrative)

R2 writes: "The mechanism could describe any organization; this isn't entrepreneurship theory." R3 writes: "Add a mediation analysis to prove the cognitive pathway." The editor's letter foregrounds R2 (the contribution premise) and treats R3 as secondary. A losing response argues with R2 ("we believe it is entrepreneurial") and bolts on R3's mediation. A winning ETP response: in the synthesis, lead by acknowledging R2 as the binding concern and summarize the rebuild — "we re-grounded the mechanism in the liability of newness, added a venture-formation boundary condition, and rewrote the practice section accordingly." Under R2.1, quote the new theory text and page. For R3, do the mediation if defensible; if the data cannot support a clean mediation test (a common entrepreneurship-data limit), say so transparently, offer a conditional-process robustness check as an alternative, and add the limit to future research — rather than reporting a fragile mediation that a methods reviewer will puncture next round.
