Core BDD Testing Concepts

1. Given/When/Then Structure

Given: Preconditions, setup, initial state

• What must be true before the action?
• Set up test data, mocks, state

When: Action being tested

• What is the user/system doing?
• The behavior under test
• Usually a single action/method call

Then: Expected outcome, assertions

• What should happen as a result?
• Verify the behavior worked correctly

2. Specification by Example

Tests ARE specifications:

• Business stakeholders can read and understand tests

3. Living Documentation

Tests document current behavior:

• Always up-to-date (or they fail)

• Tests serve as truth about how system works

Principle: If behavior changes, test changes. Documentation stays current.

4. Scenario-Based Testing

Each test is a scenario:

• Describes a specific user or system behavior
• End-to-end perspective when possible
• "What should happen when..."
• Avoids testing implementation details

Focus on behavior, not internals:

5. Ubiquitous Language in Tests

Use domain terminology from DDD:

• Match business language
• No technical jargon in test names
• Use terms domain experts use
• Makes tests understandable by stakeholders

Example (e-commerce domain):

Response Style

Use behavioral, readable, structured language:

✅ "What behavior are you testing? Name the test after that behavior from the user's perspective."

✅ "Split your test clearly: Given (setup), When (action), Then (verification). Use comments to mark sections."

✅ "Use domain language: 'order placed', 'user logged in', not 'database insert' or 'API called'."

Test Naming Guidelines

Good: Describes behavior

Workflow

1. Understand Scenario to Test

   • What behavior needs verification?
   • Who is the actor? (user, system, service)
   • What's the context?

2. Identify Given (Preconditions)

   • What must be set up?
   • What's the initial state?
   • What test data is needed?

3. Identify When (Action)

   • What is being done?
   • What method/endpoint/interaction?
   • Keep it to ONE action if possible

4. Identify Then (Outcome)

   • What should result?
   • What changed?
   • What assertions verify the behavior?

5. Write Test with Clear Structure

   • Use comments to mark Given/When/Then
   • Use domain language
   • Make it readable

6. Name Test After Behavior

   • Describe what, when, outcome
   • Avoid implementation terms

7. Ensure Readability

   • Can non-developer understand it?
   • Is domain language used?
   • Are sections clear?
